Server :: Of FQDNs - Sendmail - And Apache VirtualHost Server Aliases
Feb 26, 2011
I'm setting up a full server configuration on Fedora, moving it from Mandriva which sadly faces a rather uncertain future. Things are going well and I will be ready (and more familiar with Fedora) in time to upgrade to Fedora 15.
What I have done so far in regard to networking setup:
I first removed Network Manager and replaced it with the network service (chkconfig --level 25 network on). That put an end to the overwriting of /etc/hosts, which now reads simply:

I have figured out how to use virtualhost, proxypass and proxypassreverse. So far, so good.
The problem I'm experiencing is this:
I have a reverse proxy server running apache (123.123.123.123)
Behind this proxy server I have a http server running apache (124.124.124.124).
This http server has multiple sites (virtualhost), it's only reachable via the proxy server.
If i run a nslookup on www.somedomain.com I get 123.123.123.123 (Not really but you understand what I mean)
I put my proxy to have the IP 123.123.123.123, so far so good. The requests come in to the proxy server.
I want my http server to be named 124.124.124.124.
In the http server I wish to set up my virtualhosts like this:
How do I get my proxy to grab the data from the http server?
If I do like this I will only make another request to my proxy server.
If I do like this, only the first page in the httpd.conf in my http server will work.
Do I need to setup a different DNS server for the proxy server? I would hate that. Perhaps use hosts-file in proxy. Or maybe I can use sub-domains?

For a project that I have been assigned to, I need to send emails to a business partner(business_partner.com) from one production server. However, my emails neither reach their destination nor bounce back to me.
Working with our business partner's IT support, the following error was discovered in their maillogs:
Quote:
Further analysis by my IT support shows that emails are successfully sent out ("Message accepted for delivery"):
Quote:
The app I coded is not using a public internet email address (e.g. me@hidden_domain_name.com) to send these notifications.
Instead, it uses an intranet email address (the server's where my code resides: user_name@servername.hidden_domain_name.com).
We created an alias but it made no change. Would adding my public internet email address to "trusted-users" file (we use sendmail)

I am trying to add a virtual host to my machine by name to the IP here.It absolutely refuses to work.it is a mess server I hope to upgrade soon, but it has 2 versions of apache running together on it.The first one (php3) just proxies all the requests from 80 to 8080 which has another instance of apache running php5.I don't know what else to do, it keeps defaulting to the host header error virtual host.

Fetchmail +sendmail played nice together, until I installed hylafax, and added an alias it requires. I just ran the usual makemap command on aliases to make aliases.db, and that's there the trouble began. Fetchmail appeared to hang, at any email account that had email in it, at the RCPT stage. I finally read the warning at the top of /etc/mail/aliases that says to run newaliases.

I am using webmin for my daily tasks. I have fedora 13, whenever I click on ''Sendmail M4 Configuration'' or Outgoing Addresses (generics)'' I get the following error message
Quote:
The Sendmail M4 configuration base directory /usr/share/sendmail-cf was not found on your system, or is not the correct directory. Maybe it has not been installed (common for packaged installs of Sendmail), or the module config is incorrect. I read documentation at sendmail.org, it seems that structure of directories for send mail has been changed in version sendmail-8.1.4 shipped with FC13. In webmin config module we have
Quote:
Sendmail M4 base directory = /usr/share/sendmail-cf
which is not there. I did a locate / sendmail-cf on the command line, it finds nothing

I'm using sendmail on a small server and in addition to several users I have a few small email lists implemented in the aliases file. Is there any way to secure these aliases so that they can only be used by users with accounts on the machine already?
I'm getting a lot of external spam sent to the lists and I figure this is the easiest way to deal with it. 100% security isn't even necessary if I can stop most of the spam (i.e. causing sendmail to discard any mail sent to the lists that don't originate with the same domain name as the server would kill 99% of the spam since most of it doesn't have a spoofed email matching our server's domain name). I'm using Debian Lenny.

Have also added new domain into local-host-names file. I am stuck on what is left to check and why the messages are getting bounced back.

I currently am running 10.04.1 and have successfully setup my home web server to run a single website. My current settings are:
-I have registered the domain name annarrankings.com through godaddy
-A record is - host = @ and points to = 71.114.220.3
-CName is - host = www and points to = @
-on my server I have the site running in /var/www
I've done some research and found that to run multiple websites I need to setup VirtualHost.
-So I created a folder /var/www/annarrankings.com and moved my site to that folder
-Edited Apache2.conf to add the following line
-I then went to /etc/apache2/sites-enabled and copied the default file to a new file called annarrankings.com. Here's the annarrankings.com file after I edited it
-I then created a link in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled to the annarrankings.com file in /etc/apache2/sites-available
-Next I editied /etc/hosts
-When i went to enable the site using a2ensite annarrankings.com I got the following
I figured this was ok since I had already created a symbolic link earlier (a result of trying to following multiple tutorials and ..... videos at once) so I reloaded apache2. I created an index.html file in /var/www/ just for testing purposes and when I load www.annarrankings.com I get the file located in /var/www/ instead of the website located in /var/www/annarrankings.com Do I need to change my A record or CName in godaddy or did I just do this completely wrong?

I recently modified sendmail.cf to use a third party SMTP server to send emails. It works great. But when I run sendmail from the command line, I have to specify the -C flag and force feed it the location of my sendmail.cf, or else it doesn't work.
So in other words, the following works great:
However, if I don't specify the -C flag, sendmail doesn't consider what's in the sendmail.cf and barfs:
I don't run sendmail as a daemon. I'm only using it to send emails. I know my modifications of sendmail.cf are correct because it works perfectly when I use the -C flag. I searched my disk to see if I could find another sendmail.cf on the machine and only the one in /etc/mail came up.
Why sendmail is not reading my sendmail.cf?
I'm running Sendmail version 8.14.2 on Fedora Core 8.

I recently setup an email server on Fedora Core (14). Sendmail is running and I am trying to authenticate from a client pc using imaps. I installed Cyrus-imap and it is running and listening on 993. When I try to login, it doesn't accept authentication even though I verified the user's password is correct. (tested with ssh)Is there something I have to do with Cyrus or on the server to allow connections to email? I have not used Cyrus before. I am attempting to access my mail folders via Sendmail and did not make mailboxes in Cyrus. I did allow imaps through the firewall.

After searching the forum I could not find a clear answer to my question so I am giving it a try...
I have installed a LAMP server with Postfix as mail server. The scripts send email as user www-data using the mail server on the same machine.
However, the email got rejected by external mail servers (failed reverse DNS check) so I setup a mail server that meets all needed requirements.
Now I would like to use this second server instead of the mail server on the LAMP server. I found that this could be done with changing sendmail settings in php.ini (I think).
However I am not sure how that will go: www-data is no actual user on the new email server (which requires authentication before sending). Do I need to create a new user on the email server or change the settings in php.ini to match an existing user?

I wrote a small script :
#cat myscript.sh
NEWFILE=dojas.sh
touch $NEWFILE
in that script I create some alias commands an pipe them to a new shell script (called dojas.sh) however after execution of that script , I do not see the aliases jan1 and jan2 in my terminal. Even if I execute the dojas.sh srcipt manually , I do not see the aliases in the alias output of my terminal. The only way I can make the aliases active is do the following : cat dojas.sh copy and paste the alias rules, and they are active in my session. How can I make sure that I can activate aliases and they are active in my terminal from a script ?
Note : I am not interested in .bashrc file, I want them to be active in my current session.

I have /var on it's own partition. Should i direct mail, in /etc/alises, sent to root to my normal local user or will /var end up getting filled up with mail, if i do that? Also:I went on the forums for dynDNS.com, explaining that i was setting up a network that includes a web server and a mail server. They rightly pointed out that i only needed to set up a DNS A record for webserver.dyndns.org. The mail server would be located by this DNS A record, as both machines share the same external I.P address(the external I.P of my ADSL router). So my mail addresses could be me@webserver.dyndns.org. So both machines would be reachable with the same DNS A record, and port-forwarding on my ADSL router would determine which host got which requests. That's what they said i should do for my scenario.
Bearing this in mind what should the values of $myhostname, $mydomain, $mydestination and $myorigin be?
My current thoughts, on the simplest way to do this, are:If $myhostname is mailserver.webserver.dyndns.org, then $myorigin can be webserver.dyndns.org, then $mydomain is webserver.dyndns.org and $mydestination has it's DEFAULT setting(mydestination = $myhostname localhost.$mydomain localhost). This the simplest workable approach right?, if not what are the best values for these parameters?.Also I have /var on it's own partition. Should i direct mail, in /etc/alises, sent to root to my normal local user or will /var end up getting filled up with mail, if i do that?

Having some issues setting up sendmail on a (basically) blank RHEL 5.5 server setup. My ultimate goal is to be able to automagically send logs / errors / notifications to ourselves from the server.
Our basic setup is a Win 2003 domain with exchange running on mail.domain.com.au.
I've edited the '/etc/mail/sendmail.mc' and added the :
Code:
line to it.
Also added the domain (domain.com.au) to the '/etc/mail/local-host-names' files
Also edited submit.mc and added
Code:
When I try and send a mail from root or a test user to one of the domain accounts, it seems to go fine, i.e no errors are reported but it never gets delivered.
From the mail logs:
Code:
So it seems to be sent to the queue no problems and when I check the queue :
Code:
Total requests: 0
Not nothing ever gets received. Am I missing something? I have read and read and read but dont seem to be getting any furthur.
So in the end this server doesn't need to do anything except be able to send mail from root to an external mail address.

I am trying to set up a mail server on centos5 using sendmail and dovecot, and eventually spamassassin and some antivirus filter as well. I'd also like to get the proper secure auth mechanism set up at some point too. But for starters, I've been having a lot of difficulty trying to even connect to the mail server from a client computer in the local network. I installed Eudora on the client and after some tweaking in dovecot I was able to connect to the mail server, but then when I try to send an email I get a "connection refused" error, with nothing being logged on the server that I can see.
The last time I set up a mail server was Fedora Core 2, so the configuration files have changed a bit to say the least, and I can't really refer back to those to set up this new server. Does anybody know of a good step-by-step doc on getting the mail server going? I've read the man pages and other various readme's, but these really only list out the available options with no really good explanation of what needs to be done to get the mail server going. If there isn't a full write-up on how to do this, I'll put something together when I'm finished so others can use it in the future.
