Jan 4, 2010If you hadn't guessed it from my last 3000(ish) java-related posts, I'm a Java n00b writing a Java Applet for a work project. I got to the part was I was about to write the applet code that would send HTTP requests to my CGI scripts. But I read some paragraphs in a book praising Java servlets as better that CGI because they are easier to use and give much better performance server side. My server load isn't very big, though, and I was wondering if it would be worth taking the time to learn about Java servlets and how to set up the server side configuration on my Fedora web server.

Apr 13, 2010Recently I have moved to F11. While I am trying to install directFB explicitly, I am getting error related to X 11 dependencies. It could find no includes files under the directory /usr/include/x11/. But x11 libraries are available in the system. I remember that, i had these x11 include files in my F9. Do I need to install any external packages to get the x11 include files in place?

Mar 19, 2010I have prepared a static lib(.a) comprising 2 function definitions. I have created a different shared library(.so) comprising 2 more functions. The two functions of .so use the functions defined in the .a file. That is, the .so file uses the services of the .a file. Next, I create an executable that uses the shared library(.so). When I build my executable, it needs to be linked with the .a file as well. it gives me undefined reference for the functions defined in the .a file. Why is that so? I am posing this question because, the .a file has already been included(static linking) while bulding the .so. Is there any workaround so that I need not link the .a file with my final executable?

Mar 27, 2011Cannot watch second, third, etc, streams from a server-side playlist (ie, .wsx on windows media service). I have tried mplayer, vlc, totem, and xine. Xine totally fails and the other three play only the first stream as described. You can verify it works in wine by using Windows Mediaplayer v10 (`winetricks wmp10` on a clean wine prefix).
The particular example I am dealing with is not an ideal test-case as they dynamically mangle the stream's URL to prevent leeching. You can test it by either visiting $URL (below) or from command line:

You will see that mplayer is seeing an EOF and terminating (perhaps the server is too slow so mplayer's timeout triggers EOF condition?). I tired fooling with -vid/-aid flags to no avail.
Networking :: Changes On The Server Side Aren't Visible On The Client Side?
Jan 10, 2011I'm using NFS and I have the following problem. After ~100 days, the client and server lose connection, but the client doesn't know about this, it gives no error. The problem is that the changes on the server side aren't visible on the client side.
The nfs options are: "noatime, nolock, hard, udp, notcp, nosuid, nodev, rsize=8192, wsize=8192, actimeo=60"
The kernel version is: 2.6.16.27 built with 250 Hz. Is this an already corrected issue in a kernel version? Or are my options wrong?

Feb 18, 2011First of all, let me just state that i want to make a small server for my home.. which includes hosting a website and a small FTP server.
Now as far as ease, stability, use, etc.. just overall, which would be more ideal to use for this?
My top choices are FreeBSD and Ubuntu Server.
However, I do not know which of these to go with, since this is my first time setting up a server. I hear BSD is really best for web servers, but I would like to hear what the people at LQ has to say.
I know Ubuntu Server would probably be more easy to set up, but how is it in terms of stability and speed?

Aug 7, 2010As per our requirement, I need to implement a Secure FTP server for around 500 users which includes security level on both - Transfer and Rest data. Apart from this I also need the following features -
1. Size quota on Users & reminder mails for the same
2. Password expiry notifications and user interface to change their password within specified time interval
3. Aging of data - After specified time, data will be moved to some other location from their home directory
4. All type of log maintenace for each file and user and log exporting
5. Uploading & Downloading speed consistency as per server level.
6. Read-write interface for user and read-only interface for their client for the same account.
7. Backup and Recovery options.
As of now, I am using VSFTPD which does not give these much of features in combine.

Jan 2, 2010When printing in evince I cannot print on 2 sides. If I select the printer options only 1 side is available (Page Setup Tab, under layout two-sided has only 1-sided available. I have the same with gedit. So far all other apps are fine. Are these 2 apps unable to print 2 sided for some reason, or am I possibly missing something?

Feb 1, 2011The Fedora install is encrypted and my Ubuntu home folder is encrypted.I dont get to chose between them at start up and boots fedora straight away and asks for my encryption password to load it up. How can i get it so i can chose between them?Another thing, i can access the Ubuntu partition through nautilus but not my home directory as it is encrypted, is there anyway i can access it? Fedora :: Suddenly Getting About 1.5" Of The Left Side Of My Desktop On The Right
May 18, 2011I am suddenly getting about 1.5" of the left side of my desktop on the right, covering what SHOULD be there. I thought it might be my gDESKLETS as I had problems with this newer version before but removing it didn't help, so unless it is leaving something that is causing it, I don't see this being it. & I haven't done or added anything else, that I can think of, that may be behind this. I AM running the default drivers for the nVIDIA card, but all seemed OK until recently.
This happens the most if I run a application in a reduced size window or run a ..... video full screen. Rebooting seems to clear the problem for the ..... & max then min the window clears it for that. I'm using gnome on F14.

Feb 14, 2010No matter how many times I update or install new flash plugins in firefox, I always wind up with 2 versions of the 'Shockwave Flash' plugin. The first is the prevous version of Adobe, the second is the current version of either Adobe, Gnash or Swfdec. I use yum to keep my packages in synch. When a new version of Adobe comes though, it erases the older version of the currently installed plugin, keeps the newer currently installed version, and installs itself as the new version, both versions enabled.
Hope that paragraph makes sense to you, it gave me a headache to write. Further, they must both be enabled for any of them to work, and which ever I use the video is slow, choppy and prone to pausing for no apparent reason. The CPU usage is always pegged to the roof and the sound is often out of synch.
What I'm wondering is whether or not this is the normal situation or if I'm doing something wrong? I've been playing with Ubuntu and have noticed that only one version installs at one time, and the video playback is much better, if still not exactly smooth.

Is there a way to make the desktop "continuous" so that my mouse pointer would reappear on the other side of the desktop if I move it over the edge? I sometimes find it a little frustrating to have to go from one edge to the other on a multi-monitor setup, and there are a few other reasons why I would rather have it like that.

Sep 2, 2011I have a openldap server running on one machine (fedora10) and pam_ldap.so and nss_ldap.so running on the other machine.
I have added a new user to the LDAP server database, this user is not created on client machine.
1. Can i login to the client machine using this new user?

The apparent solution was jack, but I've been having a hard time getting it to run. According to #fedora I was told to get qjackctl and jack capture. Nov 2, 2010I am unable to run remote desktop from my fc 13 server, to my laptop. I have read the remote desktop setup and added port 6000 to firewall, added host name of server to xhost (nick@192.168.1.110). Added the line to /etc/gdm/custom.conf like in fedora guide (DisallowTCP=false). But i still get the error
