Server :: Squid Accepts Only HTTP Requests But Speaks FTP On The Server Side?
Apr 26, 2011
Here is my query:
Squid document says that Squid accepts only HTTP requests but speaks FTP on the server side when FTP object are requested.
We call Squid HTTP and FTP caching proxy server. Does it also caches FTP contents? Is it possible to configure FTP clients to use Squid cache? When we make an FTP request to an FTP site via Squid will it be bypassed?

We have a cisco ASA firewall at work,which redirects all http traffic to our webserver. We have to install a new website ,but it can't be installed to the same server. Setting up a squid reverse proxy can redirect the incoming http requests to the appropriate webserver? If yes, could I get some directions on howto?

I've had a VPS running Ubuntu 9.10 x64 server, hosting 3 websites of mine for a few months now. This problem has been happening for a while. Every once in a while, probably every 2 or 3 days, I'll wake up in the morning, and apache won't be responding, no web pages will load. /etc/init.d/apache2 status, reports that apache is functioning properly. Every time I simply have to restart the daemon and things run fine for another few days.
I thought maybe it was a memory issue, so I lowered the MaxClients in the prefork module from 50 to 30 a few days ago, but the same thing is still happening. My VPS has 512MB of ram, burstable to 1GB, and according to Virtuozzo, there was only one night of high traffic where I even came close to that soft limit. I've checked my syslog, and there's absolutely nothing in there about apache. I've checked apache's error.log as well, and there's nothing in there that would indicate a problem either.

For one project I use a web hosting service. I wanted the entire site to be https, so I bought a service from them in which they automatically install a trusted cert so people can access the site through https protocol. Since http is still available, though, I need to do automatic rewrites or something to change http into https requests. (I don't have access to their Apache server configuration files or anything like that.)I found on the net this code to add to my .htaccess file:
Code:
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}
[code]....

A Linux (CentOS5.3) server is setup with apache reverse proxy. The reverse proxy server is opened to outside and an internal server is mapped to ProxyPass configuration. SSL certificate is also installed on the Apache reverse proxy server. The problem is, it is extremely slow in serving http requests through reverse proxy. There is no problem with server resources or bandwidth. When the internal server is directly accessed through Internet, there is no delay. The backend server and the reverse proxy server are also on the same switch (same subnet). When I searched the Net, there were recommendations to enable cache in Apache. I did so as follows in httpd.conf.
<IfModule mod_disk_cache.c>
CacheEnable disk /
CacheRoot "/var/cache/mod_proxy"
CacheDirLevels 5
CacheDirLength 3
</IfModule>
But still there is no progress. Do I want to enable cache in ssl.conf too? Or is there any other workaround to speed up Apache reverse proxy. Is there a way to check that caching is happening?

I have searched and searched for a reverse proxy solution for non-website traffic. TCP but not http, on ports other than 80, 443, 8080, etc. Basically I just need a TCP forwarder that works with multiple TCP servers, WITHOUT webpage caching features. I do not need or want any webpage caching. Can squid work as a reverse proxy for TCP traffic without http? The other program I came across in searching was HAproxy. Both programs are for http but I am curious if they would work for TCP servers that do not serve webpages.

I'm trying to setup a Centos 5.6 Squid Proxy Server with Content Filtering & Antivirus Scanning Incoming HTTP Traffic from the Internet
I then proceeded to setup an configure the Proxy Server, i was able to test and confirm that Squid and Dansguardian Content Filter is working, however i dont know if Clamav is scanning HTTP traffic before it hits the client/server. Is there a way i can check if the Antivirus scanning is working.. is there some log file or real world test i can i can do to confirm that Clamav is scanning incoming traffic or even blocking potential viruses ??
Anyone who has squid proxy server with Clamav configured and its working can share there settings/setup with me and how they tested it ??

Ok I am new to all this, I did have a server years ago but have forgotten most of what I learned. My problem is getting ftp to connect to the server. I have centos and it has proftpd but I'm lost when it comes to the conf file. I created a user in plesk but when I try to connect with any ftp software it accepts the username but rejects any password. I have tried a million combinations but I just can't get my head around this. I have used it before many years ago and managed ok but that was using webmin. I feel I've bitten off more than I can chew with this server although I have managed everything else

I'm using NFS and I have the following problem. After ~100 days, the client and server lose connection, but the client doesn't know about this, it gives no error. The problem is that the changes on the server side aren't visible on the client side.
The nfs options are: "noatime, nolock, hard, udp, notcp, nosuid, nodev, rsize=8192, wsize=8192, actimeo=60"
The kernel version is: 2.6.16.27 built with 250 Hz. Is this an already corrected issue in a kernel version? Or are my options wrong?

I installed Nagios on my Ubuntu 10.04 server using apt-get and when I accessed the web console, everything was OK. I made some changes to apache (creating some new virtual sites) and since then Nagios gives me a warning message for HTTP with the message, HTTP WARNING: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found. The sites that I created are working perfectly. I noticed that the attemps are 4/4. Does this need to be reset or does Nagios automatically reset that once it detects the issue is resolved?

I'm in the process of starting a migration from an old postfix server to nice shiney new exim server however there are a few things i'm really not clear on and i'm hoping that some one here could point me in the correct direction. Okay the postfix server at the moment does the follwoing ( i'll try and keep this simple ):
* accepts incoming mail for users on multiple domains and puts the mail in the users mailbox ( external -> internal )
*accepts mail from users on multiple domains to pass on to the outside world ( internal -> external )
Obviously the POP and Imap functions are handled by other daemons.. I'd like to replicate this sort of setup on the new exim box, however the guides i can find only help with configuring the exim system for incoming mails ( external -> internal ) for multiple domains and i cant seem to find a guide that would indicate how to do both ( internal -> external and external -> internal ) on one box. I'm guessing i may have to do some sort of auth to get exim to accept and then handle the internal -> external side of things?

If you hadn't guessed it from my last 3000(ish) java-related posts, I'm a Java n00b writing a Java Applet for a work project. I got to the part was I was about to write the applet code that would send HTTP requests to my CGI scripts. But I read some paragraphs in a book praising Java servlets as better that CGI because they are easier to use and give much better performance server side. My server load isn't very big, though, and I was wondering if it would be worth taking the time to learn about Java servlets and how to set up the server side configuration on my Fedora web server.

I have a server (Fedora 12) setup at a client's datacenter and the network is setup to allow me ssh access into the server, but prevents me from opening any connections from the server. However, I need to make http and https request from the server. What I'd like to do is forward all http/https traffic through another machine outside the network.
I've been looking at the documentation for ssh and the various options there and have gotten so far as to enable initiating an ssh connection from the client network back to my machine, but am not sure where to take it from there.
Here are some of the commands I've used so far:
Code:
I'm attempting to bind port 80 to be forwarded through the local machine. I assume I use "ssh -R" to create a dynamic tunnel to forward requests but I must be missing something.
By the way, root login via ssh is disabled.

Coming from a C and C++ background, with a little SQL at university, I was wanting to move to web development and implement an idea of mine for evaluating movies. In a nutshell, the idea is this: produce a score for each movie by only taking into account opinions of people of your age and psychological profile, as derived from a questionaire. Or a score derived from the opinions they have given about other movies, the more match there is with your opinions about those movies, the higher the coefficient for their opinion in the production of the movie score.What's the easiest way to implement this, what language is the easiest to learn?

I have been beating my head for the last few weeks on this problem, (although I have been taking the wrong approach, it seems).
I need a gateway to direct web traffic to three separate servers/domains. I have been trying to do this with both a dns server and , (seperatly), apache server to forward requests. The dns server was a no go, and <i can only get apache to redirect http and ftp.
After Googling this ALOT, I believe that what I need is a gateway server to redirect my traffic to the 3 different servers. I have been reading about using using nat and iptables for this and was wondering if anyone had any advice/suggestions on this. The other thought I had was to use something like pfSense to create the gateway, but I am still reading the documentation, and I am unsure if this approach will work.

I have a debian box running Apache2 and PHP5.2.6 lenny.
When a request is made via https, php displays the content fine. If the request is made over HTTP the file is offered for download, rather than displaying it.
I know its probably something trivial but I've never seen this issue.
The plot thickens, I can display PHP over HTTP in some directories but not others (which offer the file for download)?

I'm learning about the HTTP protocol and I'd like to know if there's a tool I can use to input a HTTP request I have created myself that will output the raw response. I've had a look at cURL and wget but they don't seem to have an obvious option to do this. For example:
$ http_response < my_http_request.txt
HTTP/1.0 200 OK
Date: Sat, 24 Jul 2010 18:43:58 GMT

4. Mark location so they can return to viewing in the same place at a later time.

Since we are registered as an educational charter with the state, I would like to make the available to our web sight viewers for learning.The club owns all these tapes and they were filmed at club sponsored functions. There should be no copyright problems. I am in the process of converting them to digital.

I have a mail server (dovecot+postfix) on Centos with amavis/clamav installed and working. It correctly identifies spam as such and puts it in the headers. I want it to move those suspected spam messages into a spam folder. I do have this working on an older debian server that I didn't setup. If someone could point me in the direction if where that config might be. I can't find it in any of the mail config files.Could there be a seperate package doing this?
