Server :: RHEL5 System - FTP Transfer Fails After About 1 GB

May 6, 2010

I have a RHEL 5 system running vsftpd. If I do a put to the box, files larger than 1 GB fail around the 1 GB point. Smaller files don't have a problem. If I do a get from the box there is no problem. Both the FTP server and client are plugged into a Netgear switch. I'm trying to create an FTP server and web server so my friends and I can upload our vacation pictures. Ultimately I want my friends to be able to access my server. Right now I'm just trying to make it work between my two machines.

Networking :: Using Kermit To Transfer Files With 3 Server System

Mar 23, 2011

Here's the system:
1 server running regular Ubuntu, 40km above the surface of the earth on a scientific balloon behind an iridium modem (RUDICS) connected to its serial port
1 server on the ground running Ubuntu server
1 intermediate server used for contacting the iridium system from the ground server

I'm not sure if all the above details are completely necessary but I included them for completeness. I would like to be able to log into the balloon server and transfer files in both directions. The procedure for connecting is to telnet to the intermediate server and then to issue some modem commands to call the balloon. The balloon server is set with getty running on the serial port connected to the modem. The way I have figured out to transfer files is to run kermit on the ground server and connect to the balloon server through the intermediate server, then run kermit on the balloon server, and set it as a file server with the server command.

However, there is some sort of timeout or something, and only a few kB of any file gets transferred before the connection is broken. After that it seems like the ground server is trying to get the file from the intermediate server (which has no useful files on it at all). The file transfer screen stays open and it keeps trying and trying to transfer, until I type ^C. I don't know if there is a way of detecting through a kermit command whether the connection is still open or if there is some sort of switch to make the transfer automatically stop once it has stalled.

I have been reading about No Kermit Server (NKS) protocol, which seems to be designed for a system like this where the connection is across a third server. Is this likely to do a better job of keeping the connection open and the file transfer going? How can it be implemented? Is there any kermit command to determine from the ground server whether the connection is actually still open? Is there any way of telling whether the connection goes all the way to the balloon server or whether it ends at the intermediate server? I actually just learned about kermit today.

On a related note, is it possible to have the balloon server running getty on the serial port but still have the port accessible for reading and writing by, say, a python script (which could use the modem to dial down to the ground when it isn't in use)? It doesn't seem to work but I'm wondering if there is a way. Is there a way to temporarily stop getty, then restart it, or is this potentially hazardous? Keep in mind there will be no way to contact it if something goes wrong since it will be 40km above the earth.

Server :: On Boot The Fsck Of 2TB File-system Fails?

Apr 5, 2010

I have a 2TB file-system and when the machine reboots it fails the fsck, halts and goes into maintenance mode.Stats: I have have RHEL 5, 2.6.18 kernel, the file-system is an ext3. The file-system is on an EMC AX4 connected with fiber channel HBA.So far my reading tells me this should work because under 2.6 4TB is OK. Any ideas why this fails?If I take it out of the fstab file and mount it manually the boot is OK and the file-system behaves well. I can change the fsck check option in the fstab to 0 but I don't think I should have too. Everything I read says that 2TB ext3 file-systems are OK.

CentOS 5 Networking :: SCP Fails To Transfer Files?

Apr 11, 2009

I have two CentOS 5 servers that I'm trying to transfer files between. They're on the same LAN switch, same subnet and everything. So far, everything I've attempted has failed, but scp still exits with a return code of 0. It only displays a line of *** and exits immediately. It's almost as if the file transfers instantly, but no file actually gets copied. Here is the verbose output from scp:

scp -v kickstart.tar ****@192.168.xxx.xxx:/home/****

OpenSUSE Install :: Transfer Users From Old System To New Installed System?

Jul 19, 2010

we have a server running with Suse linux many years. Meanwhile we changed server hardware about 4 times, mostly also updating to newest Suse version. We used to copy group, passwd and shadow to a backup medium, installed the new system and restored those files onto the new system and all was running fine. Now, some weeks ago we installed 11. on new hardware and after restoring those 3 files after rebooting the system hangs when starting GUI. I can boot into runlevel 3 and login with no problem, but when I boot into runlevel 5 mouse and keyboard are frozen. Also when starting GUI from runlevel 3 with startx mouse and keyboard immediately freeze. If I restore the files group, passwd and shadow as they came from fresh new installation I can reboot and login in runlevel 5 without problems.

OK, if I compare the userlist, as it is generated bei installation,there are some usernames I formerly not had in older Suse versions. I dont know if this can make problems? I tried to edit the files, to combine the system users from 11.2 with the list of local user names from the old system but without success, again the mouse and keyboard freeze.So some questions arise:1) Why now mouse and keyboard freeze in xsystem, when there are changes in the user list (but only in runlevel 5)2) What is the correct way to save and restore users and groups from old to new system. I googled several hours but did not find a smart way. Maybee someon can point me to a link or a howto where I find the solution

General :: Configure A System To Boot Windows XP / CentOS 4 And RHEL5

May 21, 2010

I am trying to configure a system to boot Windows XP, CentOS 4 and RHEL5. I have one hard drive that contains both Windows XP and CentOS 4, and a separate drive that contains RHEL5. Until recently, I only had one SATA cable, so I could only connect one drive at a time. Under this configuration, everything works fine. When the RHEL5 drive is connected, I can boot into it. When the Windows/CentOS drive is connected, I can dual-boot into either OS. (GRUB was configured on this drive automatically when I installed CentOS into a new partition.)

Opening the box and moving the SATA cable is a lot of trouble, so I finally got a second SATA cable and enabled both SATA0 and SATA1 in the BIOS. I currently have the Windows/Centos drive as the primary, and I can still boot into both Windows/Centos. Now, I want to add RHEL5 to menu, but I can't find the file GRUB is using to present its menu at startup.

I have configured GRUB before on other systems, but I just know the very basics, such as where the grub.conf file should be. So, I spent a whole day reading advice online and asking friends who might have experience with these issues. Here are the steps I have taken so far:

I confirmed there is no /boot/grub directory, and /etc/grub.conf is a broken soft-link to /boot/grub/grub.conf. I did a find for grub.conf, which found nothing. I did a find for menu.lst, which found one item -- an example GRUB config file in /usr/share/doc/grub-0.95. I noticed that when CentOS boots, I see the GRUB commands printed to the screen, the first of which is:

root (hd0,2)

So, I did a grep -R "(hd0" * at the / directory, which also found only one item -- the example menu.lst file in /usr/share/doc/grub-0.95. I discovered that I can go to the command line grub from the grub menu and do:

cat (hd0,2)/grub/grub.conf

The cat command returns a printout of the grub configuration the system is obviously using. I didn't create this file, but the titles are identical to what I see in the GRUB menu, the default boot is Windows, and the timeout is very short. This must be the file. It looks like:

default=2
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,2)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title CentOS (2.6.9-89.ELsmp)

[Code].....

I've also tried making the RHEL5 drive the primary drive. In that case, I can modify the existing /boot/grub/grub.conf file and see my changes at the GRUB boot menu. However, I can't get Windows to boot in this configuration. I've done a lot of google searching on the topic and added map commands to make Windows think it is on the primary drive. But, I'm still unsuccessful on this front as well. I think I'm closer to solving the problem with Windows/CentOS as the primary. However, if you think I will have more success with RHEL5 as the primary drive, I can provide more details as to my current grub.conf on that drive in a later post.

Red Hat :: Adding A Root Mirror Drive To Existing RHEL5 System?

Nov 9, 2010

I have a running RHEL5 system, which has two physical disk drives, but is currently running on a single drive of the pair. The single drive the system is running on contains a root/boot partition and a swap partition. I would like to be able to add a mirror drive to this existing setup without having to disturb the running system (much). That is, I don't want to have to completely dump, reinstall (creating the mirror on the way up), and reload from backup media if I can avoid it. I have seen procedures that go as follows:

- the "extra drive" (the one not being used as the current root/boot device) is first brought under LVM control as a root object with one physical mirror attached.

- the data from the running root/boot drive is rsync-ed over to the LVM-controlled half-mirror, and boot records added.

- System rebooted on newly created half-mirror.

- Original root prepped to be second side of LVM mirrored root, and is added in.

Can one boot from an LVM disk directly? There seems to be some question on this that came up in other lists I had read online.

OpenSUSE Install :: Transfer System From IDE To SATA?

Jul 8, 2011

I have landed myself in a bit of a pickle. Needing to upgrade my system for 11.4 I went ahead and bought a refurbished Compaq. The intention was to merely replace the smaller drive with my existing drive. Only problem is that on opening the Compaq I found a SATA drive. Being a Compaq there is no space for a second drive, so I must copy my existing system via CDROM. As the 11.4 has gone through a number of updates since I installed, I cannot use the original installation CD. Downloading is out of the question for my link speed. I made an automatic backup when installing but am not sure where it is or whether it is also kept up to date. Anyway, does the backup contain merely the system and then require further transfer of home folders, etc? The alternative, of course, is to source locally the latest version that will not require hours of updating.
