I want to setup a cron job to run a bash script which which calculates the server load and if the load is above certain value(say 15) then stores highest cpu eating users list in to a file for that instant. I have a small script which lists users according to cpu usage.. But i dont know how to check the server load and if and only if its above 15.

As there were lots of DOS attacks, I have implemented Deflate-DDOS, APF and Nginx anti-ddos features and the server runs without a problem. Once every month, the load on server increases upto 300 and I receive an email like this :

I am not an oracle DBA, but need to find the cause of high load avg, even after adding more CPU power the load avg is the same.
Old and new servers load avg is the same (between 6-10 peak hours and 3 to 5 during off-peak hours) no difference. I expected the laod to come down as we added more CPUs.Our DBA says queries are optimise.Can some Oracle DBA give some tips to find the cause.

View 3 Replies View Relatedon an old server of mine, as soon as apache is started, the load average that I get to see with 'top', that normally is under 1, now just steadily climbs up and up to easily 150, in fact disabling the webserver from serving any webpage. I've checked netstat, and I'll try to upload the output. The ip's that are in there I've blocked with iptables. But that doesn't help or so it seems. I see nothing weird in the error logs. As soon as I stop apache, the load goes back to normal. As soon as I (re)start it, up it goes again. What can cause this and how do I get rid of it?
p.s. It's an old server, fedora3 or so, and I've got a new one to which I'll transfer the domains, but until that's completely done, I'd like this one to run as it has for years...
The load average is almost 1.06, but cpu is not 100% utilized... I am just wondering why load average is 1.06 in that case still ? (well i monitored cpu for long time, it never exceeded above 40%)can anyone explain the reason behind it ? Also is the system over utilized in this case ?

Recalling that I had issues with my ATI card drivers when I installed Kubuntu8.10 on my laptop, I decided to install the latest ATI Catalyst drivers. After the installation was complete I received a message warning me that if the X server fails to load I should run "aticonfig --initial -f". Indeed the X Server didn't load (after I logged in the screen flushed and went black). So I reinstalled Kubuntu 8.10 from a CD I without formating the respective partition. But the problem perists, X server fails to load. Even worse my menu.lst file has been changed and I can't boot FC11.

How to reduce the load averages.
I have a apache cluster with more than 10 nodes, based on ldirector and heartbeat. The problem is that I cannot predict if my nodes will handle the traffic in the next day (hosting a website based on daily campaigns). So I decided to limit the number of active connection on the nodes (from apache), but this is only a temporary solution. I want to create a page that will appear to users that are getting over the limit. Has anyone made this before? Can you tell me how is it possible (I don't want a how to, just a starting point to study)? I think squid can do it, but I don't know how to search for it. To give you an example of what I want, you can see the same thing on deviantart.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have apache running on my server, and also Zoneminder, a surveillance system running on the same machine. Both services runs without glitches, and I think apache's config as well as ZM's config are fine. I am not sure I understand how apache (not to mention the whole thing zoneminder, apache, web browser...) works. Pretty hard to manage when you dont know what you are doing. Also, when I try the supposed to work zoneminder webpage in my web browser, I get nothing (a blank page), or sometimes a "Not found" error message. The latest seems to be from apache because it is the same font as the "It works!" message when I try http://localhost:80
The only bit of information I have so far is in the apache error log (/var/log/httpd/error_log) and it says:

I don't know what is going on with one of my servers.
It is sitting with a load average of 10.09 10.08 10.02
However If I look at top I see the server between 95% and 99% idle!
Is it possible that my server is running some hidden processes or something?
How I can investigate the cause of this.

View 2 Replies View RelatedCan anyone explain the difference between IOWAIT%/IDLE%/LOAD AVG? We have a 3 servers (oracle rac) attached to a SAN. When we added another CPU to our 3rd server, the IOWAIT across the oracle rac dropped a lot. We used to get pretty high IOWAIT % before. So I don't really understand how the extra CPU could do this. I thought the IOWAIT % is high because the server is waiting for the SAN, so I thought the SAN was the bottleneck. So I don't really understand the difference between the 3 things (iowait, idle and load avg).

I have a Fedora 12 64bit Server set up, and for the most part it's working Great. I have 3 VHost set up, and no problems with that.
My problem is I just moved my Wife's xcart store from Godaddy to this server. And the store works great. But xcart is set up to use Clean URL's, and this is what I seem to be having all the problems with.
In my "httpd.conf" file, I have "AllowOverride All" to use ".htaccess" and in xcart ACP I have it set to use Clean URL's. I added a ".htaccess" file to root folder, with this in it.

Then the whole site works just fine, just No Clean URL's. I'm at my wits end with this, don't know what else to try to get this to work. So I was hoping someone here might have an answer, or at least some ideas to try. This all worked just fine on GoDaddy's site, I left because it was just too dam slow. It took a minute and a half just to load the Home Page. On my server its less that 2 seconds. And every time I asked them about it, it would speed up for a few days then slow down again. But the same .htaccess file worked on that server. So I think my problem is in my "httpd.conf" file just don't know where.
