I use Redhat EL 3 server , I found that the / directory is nearly full , then I remove the file in it .Now ,the files are removed , but I found that the / directory size is not changed , I sure the files are under / directory , it is strange that sometimes this problem do not happen , I usually reboot the server then the size will be reduced .

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy laptop has 2Gb of ram, 4Gb of swap, 40Gb hdd and an intel pentium 1.40GHz cpu, even when compiling stuff or maxing out everything the 4Gb of swap is never touched, with such a small hdd I'd like to reduce the swap to about 2Gb (just in case) to free up some space, does anyone know what commands/tools are available to accomplish this?
View 3 Replies View Relatedi have successfully set up squid3 with squeeze using guide on this forum viewtopic.php?f=16&t=59301 . The only problem that i have is the size of /var/log/access.log is too big and keep increasing so i run out of free space. The size of it always the same size as my free space hard disk (so it make me run out of free space in just one day, it can have size to 30 Gb ) right now , the only workaround i make is using crontab to rm access.log every hour . I'm sure this is not the right solution . Does anybody know the correct workaround about this ? I have searching in google but seems havent yet have luck with this .
View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought a brand new pc (dell XPS 8300).I' installed suse (64 bit), on it.Graphic card is Radeon HD 6770 My screen, a Samsung BX2231 have a 1920x1080 resolution. Despite that being the set resolution, the image don't take all the screen, leaving a black border around the screen. The same happens on windows, but there is an option to set that that.
So I installed the proprietary drivers. I have indeed the option to set the image full screen. But, i get some display weirdness. The status bar on the top is all messed, so are the icons on it. With some things the text don't show right. If anyone have a clue on how to set the right size with the free drivers,or fix the wackiness with the proprietary ones.
In trying to solve a friend's lack of foresight, i have currently disabled my system.
I was using dd_rescue to make a copy of a drive with a corrupt and unfixable Partition Table. I was a fool, and had a drive mounted to /media/Storage, but ran the backup to /media/storage.
Thus, dd_rescue completely filled my primary drive before informing me that there was a problem.
I don't really trust myself with command line work, so I foolishly sudo'ed nautilus and deleted the folder /media/storage.
Unfortunately, I didn't realize it, but the available space on the drive still read 0bytes.
I tried Terminal work to do a sudo apt-get clean command, but for some inane reason, the laptop screen won't support the display setting for the Terminal login, so I just had to hope that I was doing it right.
I wasn't, and decided to try working from a Live CD so I could see what I was doing.
the folder /root/.Trash/ doesn't exist on Ubuntu's install drive, and I can't figure out why the properties of the drive say "contents: 241310 files, 3.7 GB" but also "Total capacity: 52.8 GB. Free space: 0 bytes"
Any suggestions on how I can get this to shake out?
I need to check the free available size on the "/root" before creating a file .

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm new to setting up Linux Servers. I've setup a Ubuntu 10.10 Server along with CUPS and I'm using Webmin to talk to the server. I have a HP PSC 1315 Multifunction printer connected via usb to the server. Using the CUPS web interface I am able to get the server to detect the connected printer and it identified the HP PSC 1310 Series drivers.
When I printer a test page from the server's screen the print job goes through ok and the size was about 5k.
I then setup a samba share to allow my Windows 7 machine to share the printer. Windows 7 is able to pick up the shared printer correctly and I used the default HP 1310 Series drivers. When I tried to send a test page to the printer, that single page ended up being 3887kb and I also tried printing out a single paged word document which ended up being over 7MB.

I'm looking to set up a simple FTP server with an Ubuntu 10.04 box that I'm using as a file server. So far, I've tried a couple FTP server apps from the repos. One was proftpd with gadmin installed for the GUI. The other was pure ftp, with PureAdmin installed as the GUI. The problem I'm having is that gadmin seems buggy, and PureAdmin I cannot seem to make work properly. Another dilemma of mine is that I have two large hard drives with several folders on them. I only want to share a couple folders from each drive, but have them how up in the home directory of the user that logs in.
It seems like I may need a strong program that supports virtual folders (like Wing FTP), but I wanted to see if anyone out there in the Ubuntu world uses a free one that can help me make folders from different hard drives appear as though they're organized in one home directory?
just some time ago, my /usr partition's used space is started to increase rapidly, and currently it reached 17.5GB. We put /usr as a separate partition (/dev/sda2)
So when we do "df" this is the result:

But what makes me puzzled is if I do "du", I only get 4.3GB instead of 20GB as "df" reported.

If I try to get apache2 to not run on 80 shellinxabox appears to bind to it ok, but when I visit my site at port 80 via firefox I get apache instead. 1) How do I stop this and get shellinabox and apache2 working at the same time?2) How do I find another free port that isn't firewalled? All I have been trying is starting shellinabox on various ports and trying to connect and this is a very slow process

I have been running a fedora server without issues for many years and recently updated to FC12. It turned out that there is a bug in OpenSSL in FC12 that caused me a lot of problems and I had to build apache, mod_ssl and OpenSSL from source to get it working.I'm now looking at migrating to another distribution becasue Fedora is not appropriate for a production server environment in a growing company.
What I want to know is what is the most reliable distribution with regards automatic updates (bug free that is)? I'm comparing RedHat, Ubuntu LTS, Debian, etc. at the moment. Is there any report that looks at this topic?I'd expect RedHat would have the best, but I also have to take cost into account as it is the only platform that you have to pay for these updates.I read this but it seems to quickly move away from the "bug-free" question initially asked.
I'm trying to configure notifying 'sys admins' cellulars about some events in clients IT infrastructure. In linux env it would be ease, just to use 'mail' cmd but need solution for windows env in this case.
I have RAID Controller running under windows xp and its raid array sotfware has feature to notify about events by email. I found some free solutions on the internet but most of them are shareware and if are freeware, they have limitations e.g. nr of sent emails per day.
Is there some free smtp server that I can use with no limitations?
