I am setting up a Dell R310 server system with a raid controller. Has anyone installed either of these OS on this server. Is Scientific Linux more stable than centOS these days.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi've got a DELL Tower UPS 1000W which i would make work with a Linux CentOS 5.4 64-bit (kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5) system using USB connection.Dell claims that this UPS is 100% working with RHEL 5.x (w/ serial and usb), but they don't provide support for CentOS (even if it's quite the same linux distribution)...When i plug in the USB cable the system reports:

View 1 Replies View RelatedWe have 6 Dell r610 running CentOS 5.4 with stock kernels, with a couple of Broadcom NetExtreme II 5706c 1GB NICs in them. The NICs are flaking under load, and we'd like to try some alternative NICs (in additional to playing around with driver and firmware upgrades to see if the Netextreme II's can be made stable). Assuming we do not want to do bonding or TOE and just want basic solid transport, can anyone recommend a server NIC that is rock solid with CentOS 5.4? The goal is stable as source-able, we just want to get some baseline functionality up and running while we fight the broadcom issues.

I have some trouble with my hp workstation xw4400 with an ATI FireGL 3300 and the X-Server. There was no problem with the graphical install routine and the graphical boot works fine. But when the system changes into the login-screen, then it results in a black screen and a more or less frozen system.

I made a normal squid server but want to make it transparent so that users do not need to enter the proxy settings in web browser. Even i searched about this on google but not getting it properly.I have two lan cards on centos system. ETH1 used for LAN and ETH2 used for WAN. And in this squid.conf i written "http_port 172.16.31.1:3128 transparent" and i also added a rule in iptables which is "iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 3128" but still i have to enter proxy settings at client's web browser to use internet
View 4 Replies View RelatedWe recently installed KDE on our Debian 7.7 (stable) system. However, upon logging in, the piano roll was crackly and distorted; similar, if not identical to this [URL] .... problem. However, disabling HDMI output in PulseAudio Volume Control, as recommended in the "solution" in the above link did not fix the issue, and we do not think the other solution of updating the kernel is likely to be a solution, since audio is fine in GNOME. Because of this, it seems likely that the problem is with Phonon, KDE's sound layer.
Here is some of the info about the system:
- Dual-boot Debian 7.7/Windows Vista 64-bit
- AMD sound hardware
- Only analog stereo is used; HDMI is not
- AMD CPU and (integrated) GPU
This seems to be a problem about half the time. Also, sound tends to play better when being played the second time in a row, and adjusting the volume even slightly seems to have an immediate effect on improving the sound quality.
I just ran "yum update" to download the latest kernel from the repository, and noticed that it's 2.6.18-164.11.1 while the latest on www.kernel.org is 2.6.32.4.Out of curiosity, why is there such a discripency between the two? Lack of resources to test and build binaries?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a weird performance issue with a centos 5 running a nfs server and a rh8 client. I think the fact that it is rh8 client should be downplayed. It is just that with rh8 client the performance degradation seems more clear. See test details below OS in server is Centos 5 x86_64 kernel 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5
1Gb connection between machines File to test over NFS is a 1GB file. First of all I wanted to measure how the network alone performs while using NFS. So in the server side I run a "cat" command on the 1GB file to /dev/null. Please note that the disk read speed is about 98MBs. At this point the file system has the 1GB file cached in memory. In the client side a "cat" on the same file gives me a speed of about 113MBs. It seems then that the bottleneck in this instance is the network and it is very close to nominal speed. So the network performance is really good. (BTW I know that the server got that file from cache because a vmstat or iostat shows no disk activity.)
The second test is reading from disk with no caching involve. In the server I flushed the 1GB file from the memory. For instance by reading another 5GB file and I repeat the same thing as above in the client (a cat on the 1GB file). Now, the server has to go to disk.(vmstat or iostat shows the disk activity). However the performance, now, is about 20MBs, I was expecting something closer so 90MBs. (since the reading speed in the server in the first test showed 98MBs).
This second test was repeated for ext2, ext3, xfs with no significant differences. A similar test using a RH8 NFS server and client gets me close to 60MBs for a 1GB file not cache by the file system in the serverSince network speeds and disk read speeds are not the bottlenecks ... what or where is the limiting factor then?

I set eth0 with wan IP and eth1 with internal LAN IP.the reason for the internal ip on eth1 is to enable LAN pc directly access to the webserver application..is this configuration is ok. sometimes the server link down and i have to restart network to get it back to normal again.. As far as I know, servers are stable and don't go down easily, but every single server will eventually go down some day, either from hardware/software failure or from hacking.
But as sysadmins, our job is to keep servers running healthy as long as possible.

when i write any commands using yum, such as yum check-update or

There is my problem ,after a wrong manipulation after uninstall syslog in centos 5.6 server i removed 83 packages:YUM,RPM,vim,ls..............so i can't even try to install a new package because i miss yum and rpm.

Am using Icefaces1.7.2 in tomcat5.5.23 in Centos5( jdk 1.6.06 and jre 6u11 and no X window system in my server ).. Am getting the error(java.lang.Error: Probable fatal error: No fonts found) when am using the functions getFontMetrics() and drawString() methods in my Captcha Image Generation programs. I am only using the fonts that me retrieved using ge.getAllFonts() ( i.e., the fonts available in the system ).
