I have some trouble with my hp workstation xw4400 with an ATI FireGL 3300 and the X-Server. There was no problem with the graphical install routine and the graphical boot works fine. But when the system changes into the login-screen, then it results in a black screen and a more or less frozen system.
View 3 RepliesSorry if this is in the wrong group but its a bit of an odd one but I think comes under Server Support.. I've set up both x11vnc and freenx in an attempt to eliminate either as a cause for this issue. The problem is that when I log in with either, I can get into the desktop and run things from the menus but when I make the System menu active - the session hangs and you have to killall for the freenx or vnc processes.
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me investigate this and hopefully fix it as I'm not sure where to look given that both types of remote connection seem to have the same issue.

I want to install it from my 4 GB usb stick onto my 4 GB CF card. I dunno how to get CentOS correctly onto my usb stick. I have tried unetbootin method and method from centos wiki, but it does same thing - after loading vmlinuz and initrd.gz it reboots. But when I tried to boot from that same usb stick on my laptop, it worked. Has anyone some experiences with installing centos on ebox? Or does anyone know what to do with it? Gentoo for example boots correctly, but gentoo can't install of CF cards (live instalation CD hasn't it in kernel enabled) and doesn't know my ethernet card (same).
I recently had to power off my Centos 5.5 box (ungraceful shutdown). When it came back up, three apps popped up: "Welcome to the Gnome Help Browser" (which is Yelp). In another desktop, Konqueror is waiting for a login. This happens every time I restart my system. I haven't been able to figure out how to stop this. Every time I've shut down my system since I had to bring it down hard, it's been gracefully and neither of those apps was running.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed 2 extra 1.5TB drives on a stable Centos 5.5 system. They are set up with 2 unequal partitions on each - with 2 raid 1 arrays. The largest of the raid arrays is used as a new volgeoup with 2 unequal LVMs. The larger of the LVMs is around 1.3TB. I installed an ext4 filesystem (default parameters) on the larger LVM.I went to mount the LVM - the system hung. No keyboard or network response and no response to the soft shutdown button.It was the deadest I have ever seen it - and this system has been incredibly stable.
In the absence of any other suspects - I am tempted to blame ext4 - since I have never used it before - and since wikapeadia tells me ext4 isn't supposed to be in the 2.6.8 kernels...:

I will do some more testing on this tomorrow to try to confirm my suspicions. I will try to repeat the crash - then try mounting it as ext3 to see if it behaves differently. Any other tests I should do?What is the status of ext4 in RHEL5.5. Has it been added to the 2.6.18 kernel by RH? Is this what is meant by a "back port"?
Is there any command available inorder to read the server crash dump files?

I have Centos 5.3 on our server When I log-in in webmin I have a message "Warning - Your system is actually running CentOS Linux version 5.3." In the next line I have a button "Update Detected Operating System" My question is Do I need to click the link and update Detected operating system? If I do, is it going to change any configuration on our server?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe have had a hardisk crash in our RAID1 webhosting server running CentOS5 and Plesk. We first realized something was wrong when our main site didn't load but showed MySQL errors. We then found out that the system was in read-only state. Something that also happened the day before yesterday, but we could fix with a FSCK. Then the system worked well til around 18 hours later when it crashed with the same sympoms. So, we rebooted the server and wanted to do a filesystem check again. But the HDD wouldnt even load. It was gone. Unfortunatelly it was not realized that the second disk in the system was also not working any more for some time now. Fortunatelly we had our main site backed up externally though. So we could re-install a fresh box and mounted the two drives to the system. We checked the harddisk. One is practically empty (the older one), the other has almost only files in 'lost + found' but these are all "numbered", no real filenames or so.

I have gone through many posts and did the following.Downloaded EnvyNG to download relevant ATI drivers and eventually I got to a point where I can see that ATI is listed under Hardware drivers. But, from here, how do I actually set dual monitors?. I am looking for some interface like Catalyst, but couldn't find one after the drivers got installed. What am I missing here?I went back and forth, but after restarting the PC, the resolution goes to 800X640 and I have no option of setting dual monitors. I reset the options in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to let Ubuntu use the default drivers.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter a bit of work I got 3d acceleration (direct rendering) working on my system. Now, whenever I use intensive graphics, (certain screen savers, Google Earth overlay animations) all performs fine for a while (1-2 minutes) and then causes a full system freeze. Only solution at that point is a hard power reboot. I don't know where to look for a solution, since I can not check any diagnostic files when the system is frozen.
System:
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz
ATI FireGL V3100 graphics Card
OpenSuse 11.4 with radeon driver.
I have a weird performance issue with a centos 5 running a nfs server and a rh8 client. I think the fact that it is rh8 client should be downplayed. It is just that with rh8 client the performance degradation seems more clear. See test details below OS in server is Centos 5 x86_64 kernel 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5
1Gb connection between machines File to test over NFS is a 1GB file. First of all I wanted to measure how the network alone performs while using NFS. So in the server side I run a "cat" command on the 1GB file to /dev/null. Please note that the disk read speed is about 98MBs. At this point the file system has the 1GB file cached in memory. In the client side a "cat" on the same file gives me a speed of about 113MBs. It seems then that the bottleneck in this instance is the network and it is very close to nominal speed. So the network performance is really good. (BTW I know that the server got that file from cache because a vmstat or iostat shows no disk activity.)
The second test is reading from disk with no caching involve. In the server I flushed the 1GB file from the memory. For instance by reading another 5GB file and I repeat the same thing as above in the client (a cat on the 1GB file). Now, the server has to go to disk.(vmstat or iostat shows the disk activity). However the performance, now, is about 20MBs, I was expecting something closer so 90MBs. (since the reading speed in the server in the first test showed 98MBs).
This second test was repeated for ext2, ext3, xfs with no significant differences. A similar test using a RH8 NFS server and client gets me close to 60MBs for a 1GB file not cache by the file system in the serverSince network speeds and disk read speeds are not the bottlenecks ... what or where is the limiting factor then?
I am an old days RH release user(from 6.x) and just switching back from Debian/Ubuntu to CentOS on some servers, but I can not understand the kernel update strategy currently enabled in CentOS.There are two boxes, with almost identical installation, but recently there was an auto update of kernel on one box. This auto update also seems to issue an auto reboot on the machine, which is unacceptable on server machines.

Have installed an IBM 40Gb 2.5" HD for OS storage. I am doing the install procedure in text mode. Everything goes as planned until I get to the package selection.
1. Booting from (i386) DVD with "linux text" parameter.
2. Skipping media check.
3. Selecting "English" install language.
4. Selecting "DK-latin1" as keyboard layout.
5. Selecting "Remove all partitions and create default layout" and selecting "no" to modifying partition layout.

LoLwell so i did the system keeps boot till i get to this linesbin/mingetty: /sbin/mingetty: cannot execute binary file alot, and it shows. INIT: Id "5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes ...so maybe its a memory issue so took 8 gig out left 4 in the system now it reboot alls good with only 4 gig of ram installed so is there a way to fix it to use all the ram can i get the system boot on 4 gig and then add the 8gig later on

I am running a CentOS 5.5 system which does NOT support VT Technology, so I am unable to use Xen HV. I am very happy with OpenVZ other than the fact that it doesn't support Windows, only Linux.I'd like to have VMWare Server 2.x installed, but it appears that OpenVZ changes the Kernel to, in my case, 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6. The default kernel on my system is 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.i386.If I change grub to load 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.i386, VMWare will work but OpenVZ will not. CentOS is up to date as of beginning this week. Doing a quick net check suggests HW-problem ( HP DL380 G6), but I've tested both memory and cpu(s) without errors. We also had the same problem on Scientific Linux 5.4.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm working in a little company and 2 weeks ago one of our server had a hard disk failure (yes it was a seagate 11) and after passed two days without sleep trying to recover everything (and we did it!!) we took the decision now to use in some of our server a raid sw, so if one HD fail we can continue with our system without losing nothing. Yes I know normally you have to take all the precautions before so this things never happen, but you know I thing if it never arrives you, you always think than you're lucky and it's never going to happen to you but one day you discover reality.
So now this server is working with a Centos and the default HD partitions one boot partition and the LVM. I'm reading everything I'm finding about raid sw and lvm but I don't find if it's possible to create now with the system working a raid sw without having to reinstall all the system. Is it possible to do it ? If not what are my options to make a system backup before reinstalling everything?

I am using CentOS5.2 and gnome 2.16, sometimes (not very often) when I open something and close it by clicking the CROSS on the top-right corner. The application crash and I lose all control (no keyboard anymore), I have to reboot the system by reset the machine. What's going on?
Yesterday, when I logon as root and run service setup, after I uncheck a sevice in the list and then start it, I click the CROSS on the top-right corner of the window, it popup a window (in the background) to ask me to save it or not, but then I total lose the control, no mouse, no keyboard. I try to reset the machine many times, but everytime when I repeat the same operation, it crash again. Seems that if I don't close it, everything would be fine!!!!
