View 3 RepliesI am trying to set uamsung clx2160N as a standalone network printer on my home network. It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. Using Samsung's own setup package - finds printer and all the details it needs to work but offers no drivers2. Using Ubuntu's printer setup - recognises printer but stalls at Searching for Drivers dialog3. Trying to *** printer using CUPS - no problem finding and recognising printer, but when I come to search for the driver I get Internal Server Error.
I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?
We have approximately 100 retail locations that will have split vpn tunneling. Intranet traffic will flow over the vpn to the corporate headquarters, voip traffic will tunnel to a regional hub and internet bound traffic will go over the local isp. The retail locations are small with 1-8 users and no enterprise grade equipment (servers, etc). This setup in effect will render our current content filtering solution useless.
The locations will be equipped with Cisco ASA 5505 Firewalls. The original plan was to use a Websense server and the url filtering feature to act as a content filter. I just found out that pricing for Websense was not included in the budget will be a show stopper. There may also be some performance issues with this method. Putting a proxy server at each location is not really an option. We do not have the resources to place a server at each location, plus the users could simply unplug an inline device or go around it. There is minimal supervision at most of these locations.
Ideally, I would like to find a way to use something like Dansguardian with an ldap interface and the url filtering feature of the ASA firewalls. I found a program called n2h2p, but I can find 0 documentation for it. It is also 2 years old with no updates. I also need to be able totrally manage this as trying to keep up with 100 different configurations for 400 users would be virtually impossible for the amount of time I will have available
Printer is connected via USB to server PC running OpenSUSE 11.1 Client PCs are running 11.1, XP, Vista No problem printing from the Windoze machines
Printing is trouble free with the 11.1 client's firewall disabled, but no printer is available with firewall running.
In hopes of diagnosing the problem I figured I'd open everything I could think of until the printer remained available with the firewall running. Then I planned to start removing exceptions one at a time 'til removing one caused the printer to disappear.
I've gone to Yast>Security and Users>Firewall>Allowed Services>External Zone and tried addingSamba Server
NetBIOS server
Samba Client
Samba Server
VNC

I have a virtual Linux box with a static IP in the cloud.
I have remote sites that have networked PCs that normally act as terminals but also have more than one printer on the Windows Network.
I would like software on the Window's machine to access the known IP address of the server and advertise the printers on the network so they can be printed to with lpr or cups. I don't have a problem manually setting up the printers on Centos if that is necessary. (But I need to know how to do that as well).
I need to know if I can setup a VPN on Windows without it stopping regular internet traffic and how to do it.
I need to know all the steps (what to install, what to issue commands for) to make this happen without using a GUI if possible and if the GUI is easier I need to know which GUI to install.
I also do not have a problem with using a VPN router at the client side if that makes it any easier. Like a Cisco RV120W.
the remote printer appears in cups but if I try to do a test page i get a page not found error. it even says ready under yast printers.it is set up on a remote desktop using cups
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am new to Ubuntu and would very much appreciate someone's assistance in getting my printer to work in the Ubuntu O.S.The printer filter is located in my /home/ldavis/opt... directory and not in the/opt/ OpenPrinting- Epson/ppds/Epson directory where some of the .ppd.gz are located and where the error message states it is looking for it. Do I need to extract the .ppd.gz in the /opt/OpenPrinting-Epson/ppds/Epson directory and install the filter in the same location?
After trying several times in vain, I attempted to download and install the pinter drivers using the sudo -i apt-get install <> and apt-get upgrade < >. It installed some Epson printer drivers, but I still get an error message that the printer is looking for a printer filter to be installed. Can someone please tell me how to install a printer filter and which directory should it be installed in?
Ubuntu 1010 64bit
HP Deskjet 5740 USB interface
The printing has been running without problem ever since the installation of this box at least >1 year. Today I found it stop working with following warning:

I am trying to connect my home printer to my Dell Vostro 1015 laptop that uses Linux (Ubuntu) operating system, and it tells me to enter my printer's URI or my printer's host name.
My questions are:Where can i locate my printer's URI?What Java version and Windows version are capable for linux operating system, so I can install Internet Explorer and watch videos/games that uses Java?
I just upgrade to Fedora 11.
I have problem in installing the printer, no matter add printer in local network or Windows Printer via Samba.
The summary is as follow:
I have download a printer driver and had installed but got error when I tried to printer a test page.
I'm trying to add my Samsung SCX4500W printer to my opensuse 11.2 machine running KDE.From Yast->Printer->Add printerI am able to set the printer up, however there is no driver for my specific network printer. Samsung does provide a linux driver but I have no idea what I'm doing when installing peripherals on linux basically

View 3 Replies View RelatedHaving made the transition from a certain widely used operating system to linux, suse 11.2, x64, successfully and pleasantly we are still left with a few problems. One of these is a few applications i have to use which run only in that old OS. ?To that end I have installed VirtualBox and got them to run with one glitch. I cannot print from VBox to my HP LaserJet 4000, lpt1 printer, which works fine in suse. Searching and posting on the Vbox forums turned up that lpt1 is not supported in the current vbox and that I need to set up a virtual network, set up the printer as a network printer and set it up as an lpd/lpr printer in Vbox WinXP. Have tried many different ways to do this without success, I think the problem is I do not know how to set up a network printer in Linux.
The virtual network is vboxnet0, which does show up in ifconfig, along with my eth0 net, and I can ping the windows guest, gateway and the host from either side host:suse/guest:winXP) respectively. Have tried numerous ways of setting up printer in YaST which works in suse but still does not work from WinXP guest. Have read the suse manual and several sources and searched forums with no results. Finally I am thinking I just don't know how to set up a network printer in linux. Using cups, kde, suse 11.2, don't know what else to tell. Samba is installed, although I am not using it to the best of my knowledge.
We operate a small ISP and are currently using a debian distro as our gateway server.Recently we have had an increased number of spam issues with customers (not them sending it directly, rather the customer getting infected with a virus/malware and then their computer becoming a bot).I'd like to set up another gateway of sorts to sit after our authentication gateway but before our backbone to provide spam filtering (and hopefully virus filtering) for any traffic passing through which might be email.I've tried searching for any linux based software which would suit, but I'm coming up empty.
Surely there's something already out there which can perform this task. Finally, just to clarify, I'm not talking about spam filtering for email accounts we host ourselves (this is built into our mail server); I'm talking about spam originating from customers PC's which is passing through our gateway (but not our mail server).
What is a good IP filter/firewall program? Seeing as how I like free softwares, I download a lot of torrents. When I was using Windows, I used PeerBlock (the newer fork of PeerGuardian), however, it's not available for Linux. What would be a good alternative for this in Linux? I tried iplist as it has a GUI, and it was extremely buggy and blocked random web pages even after I put them on the exceptions list. And MoBlock has no GUI from I understand, nor has it been updated in years.

How to recognise a problem and how to reconfigure my hardware?
I always use VNC to check my server for updates, and this morning I started the xvnc4viewer to vnc into my server and it keep asking for a password. I never setup a password because I do this local from my laptop, and I am the only one who uses my laptop. I had to go to my server and check the setting in System > Preferences > Remote Desktop and found them all changed. There was a password setup and there was a check mark in the you must confirm each access to this machine there some security update that changed all these setting? Sometimes when I do updates I don't know what is being changed on my server

I have a Compaq Presario, SR1503WM with 750 meg of RAM. I normally boot to Ubuntu on my primary harddrive, but can redirect to a Win2K boot from the other drive. I'm in Windows now, sending this.
If I do a normal boot now, to Ubuntu, and select FF or Opera, I get "Could not Locate Remote Server". It suggests I uncheck "Work Offline". I do and this still gets me nowhere.
I went to System/Admin/Network Connections and all of the tabs were empty. In the WIRED tab, I clicked on ADD and a new WiredConnection1 was established, and, after reboot, is still there, but it does nothing.
I have a cable connecting me to the modem, haven't tried to install wireless yet. This has been sufficient for months, and as I said, still works for Windows.
I think I should go ahead and ReInstall 10.04LL. I upgraded without an install disk.
how possible it is if at all to get information out from remote printers?Mainly i'd like to know the printer trays the printer has available and how the printer has assigned names to those trays, in order for me to send print jobs to specific print trays and know that i'm using the correct tray name whereas currently its a guess and thus probably not workingI have lpr and have printcap file set-up and have no problems in printing, I just want to be able to specify more options and in order to do this i feel i need to probe the printer somehow to find out what options are available?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I've read a bit and it seems that this is okay and secure. But I wanted to double check here with everyone, because I trust here more than just about anywhere. I've read about the hipporemote (which is pretty cool) and I have it working. Basically I want to make sure my system is still secure.
1. I had to open a port on my firewall for the VNC connection.
2. I turned on the Remote Desktop
2a. Checked Allow other users to view....
2b. Checked Allow other users to control....
2c. Checked You must confirm.....
2d. Checked for password, and put in a password
2e. Checked Configure network automatically to accept connectios
So with doing all of that, am I ok? I think so, especially since it says its only accessible on my local network. But I just wanted to hear from people who know more than I do that I don't need to worry any more than normal about others accessing my machine. I'm mainly thinking 2e, I don't fully understand what's going on there.
how efficient and effective are these snort, argus, ossec etc etc for an organization having 3500 PC Network, connected through 700+ Cisco Devices (Layer 2 and Layer 3), and scattered on 130 different sites (geographically)? what should be the combination of products and what should be the architecture for an efficient forensics activity?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI used Avast webfilter (proxied webtraffic through Avast) when running Windows. Sometimes Avast would alert and "protect" me from being infected by a compromised website. NOTE: Avast would alert even absent clicking any links. Just viewing the page could result in infection. Should I be running some kind of proxy webfilter for protection? My understanding is that Firefox can be compromised and this can in turn compromise Ubuntu. Are these kinds of threats specific to Windows running Firefox, or Firefox per se. If Firefox per se it seems like I need some sort of Proxy webfiltering like Avast provides.
