Ubuntu Security :: Vulnerable To Infection From Website Without A "proxy Antivirus Filter"?
Dec 15, 2010
I used Avast webfilter (proxied webtraffic through Avast) when running Windows. Sometimes Avast would alert and "protect" me from being infected by a compromised website. NOTE: Avast would alert even absent clicking any links. Just viewing the page could result in infection. Should I be running some kind of proxy webfilter for protection? My understanding is that Firefox can be compromised and this can in turn compromise Ubuntu. Are these kinds of threats specific to Windows running Firefox, or Firefox per se. If Firefox per se it seems like I need some sort of Proxy webfiltering like Avast provides.

I'm just curious as to what security measure's I should be taking to make my box a little less vulnerable? I'm still experimenting/playing with Linux, use the net, IM, download this and that and was wondering how secure fedora 10 was out of the box?

I run 64 bit ubuntu 9.10. I recently rebooted my computer with a flash drive plugged into a USB port. My question is, could I have got a boot sector virus because of this? What are the symptoms of a boot sector infection? After the incident, I scanned the flash drive with clamav and it didn't detect any viruses. Also, in the BIOS, the hard drive is higher up in the boot sequence than USB mass storage drives. These two things suggest to me that a boot sector virus is improbable. But, recently, when I tried to boot into ubuntu, I got an error message saying that /dev/disk/uuid<some characters here> didn't exist.
Is this a symptom of a boot sector virus? So, I ended up re-installing ubuntu and I believe grub was written to the MBR. Will this have erased any boot sector viruses that were on my system? Can a boot-sector virus affect linux too? How can I check to see if I have a boot-sector infection? I also have windows xp on my computer. For some reason, windows xp isn't letting me install any updates, but this has been going on for since before the above incident with the flash drive and therefore I don't think that is due to a boot sector virus.

My laptop is beginning to show its age so it may be time for a new PC soon, and most likely it'll come with Windows 7 preloaded. I currently run a dual boot with Lucid and Windows XP, and although I hardly use XP anymore I would repeat this configuration on the new PC. So now I'm wondering if Windows 7 is any less vulnerable to viruses and malware than its earlier predecessors because I don't plan to renew any virus checking software that may come with it.

In the wake of all of the stories about the Windows DLL hijacking bug, it appears that certain Linux distributions may be vulnerable to a similar problem related to the way that Linux handles a specific variable in some cases. The bug apparently was introduced via a Debian patch last year. The discussion on the possible bug in Linux began with a blog post by Tim Brown, a UK-based security researcher, who detailed a specific case in which Linux could be vulnerable to an attack similar to those designed to exploit the Windows DLL bug. The post spawned a related discussion on the Full-Disclosure mailing list, in which several others confirmed that they'd seen the problematic behavior in certain Linux distributions, including Fedora, Ubuntu and Debian.

I read some articles about viruses in Linux and about some antiviruses which work in Linux and delete Windows viruses but I still don't understand: is there any antivirus which specializes in Linux viruses? Even though there are very little of Linux viruses, I know.

I know that this is a linux forum, but I need to tap the brains of folks that have experience in this filed. My wife is the assistent IT director of a large community college in Pittsburgh, PA. They are running 4000-5000 client PC's. between the labs a nd faculty, across multiple campuses. They are rolling out Win 7 64 bit across all machines. They have 1/2 the PC's on Forefront and 1/2 on TrendMicro. They want to re-evaluate the AV solution, and are unable to find any decent review or tests for Enterprise level AV/spyware/malware solutions.

I would like to use my Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic system to scan and clean viruses from Windows based HDD. I have KlamAV, AVG, and AVAST. I couldn't get F-prot to work. I don't find a debian package of it and don't know how to install tar.gz and the tutorials don't help a lot. Are there other antivirus solutions which are good for cleaning Windows OS but work on Linux/WINE? I wonder if I can install antivirus software in WINE and scan with no problem the hard disks.

I run a HTTP/HTTPS proxy server but one of our clients is having trouble accessing [URL]Can anyone see if the login button is using some kind of weird connection feature? I thought it might be using flash or something rerouting the connection through something other than port 80 (or 8080 for the proxy) but not sure if that is the issue.I just used a fake login and password but instead of giving me the incorrect password error the page just hangs.

I would like to install Linux based AntiVirus Server with Windows Clients. As per the existing setup, all Windows machines are using "demo" or "evaluation" copy of antivirus & all antivirus softwares are not same on all windows computers.
Someone is using Trend-Micro ,other is using Avast. Due to above listed problem,i want to implement Linux Based Free AntiVirus Server, which will be connected directly on the internet. The Linux AntiVirus server will updated it's database from Internet automatically.
Inside the Linux Server, all Windows PC's are connected in a same Local Area Connection. All windows XP computers will fetch the updated data from the Anti Virus Server. Also,i am searching MAIL RESPONDER OR POP UP Windows, when any virus found on any client machine. My company needs Cost Effective solution & Linux is the best solution for this.

1. I understand you can protect your files or directories in your website by setting file/directory permissions. The meaning of r w x is clear to me, but I'm not sure how to proceed... Starting with the index.html file, if I wanted to make it so that anyone in the world can read it but can't modify it, do I set its permissions to rwxr-xr-x? If I set it to rwxr--r--, would that mean the file couldn't be served? I mean, what does the x setting do on a .html file, how can a .html file be executable?
2. If file permissions work on the lines of owner-group-others, in the context of a website, who is 'group'? As far as I can tell, there's only the owner, which is me, and others, which is the world accessing the site. Am I correct in thinking that by default, say when creating a website on a shared hosting server, there is no group unless I specifically set one up?
3. My ISP allows the DynDNS.org service, meaning that I could serve a website from my home. It's too early to go that route just yet, but for future reference, I would like to ask about the server software called Hiawatha. It is said to be secure, but having read some evaluations of it, it doesn't seem to offer anything that couldn't be accomplished with Apache or Cherokee, it's just that its security settings are simpler and easier to configure. Am I right about this? Or does Hiawatha truly offer something that the other major server packages don't?

What is a good IP filter/firewall program? Seeing as how I like free softwares, I download a lot of torrents. When I was using Windows, I used PeerBlock (the newer fork of PeerGuardian), however, it's not available for Linux. What would be a good alternative for this in Linux? I tried iplist as it has a GUI, and it was extremely buggy and blocked random web pages even after I put them on the exceptions list. And MoBlock has no GUI from I understand, nor has it been updated in years.

We have approximately 100 retail locations that will have split vpn tunneling. Intranet traffic will flow over the vpn to the corporate headquarters, voip traffic will tunnel to a regional hub and internet bound traffic will go over the local isp. The retail locations are small with 1-8 users and no enterprise grade equipment (servers, etc). This setup in effect will render our current content filtering solution useless.
The locations will be equipped with Cisco ASA 5505 Firewalls. The original plan was to use a Websense server and the url filtering feature to act as a content filter. I just found out that pricing for Websense was not included in the budget will be a show stopper. There may also be some performance issues with this method. Putting a proxy server at each location is not really an option. We do not have the resources to place a server at each location, plus the users could simply unplug an inline device or go around it. There is minimal supervision at most of these locations.
Ideally, I would like to find a way to use something like Dansguardian with an ldap interface and the url filtering feature of the ASA firewalls. I found a program called n2h2p, but I can find 0 documentation for it. It is also 2 years old with no updates. I also need to be able totrally manage this as trying to keep up with 100 different configurations for 400 users would be virtually impossible for the amount of time I will have available
