SUSE :: Can No Longer Pick Up Wireless Internet Signal
Mar 24, 2010
my laptop, an Acer Aspire 5050, recently broke horribly. However, after giving it to an IT teacher at my college, he fixed it, but now the operating system is OpenSuse 11.2 (It was Windows Vista Home Basic before). I have never used OpenSuse, or any Linux before, but everything seemed fine. However, I discovered that I can no longer pick up my wireless internet signal - why is this and what can I do to fix it?! Be aware I am not a computer man, and will not understand complicated technical language.

For the past few months I've been using Ultimate Edition 2.3 on my laptop. Various problems I encountered convinced me to switch. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 today and after the install I can't pick up my wireless router on the list of available networks. I'm able to pick up every other one on my block, just not my own. My server and my roommates laptop can pick it up and are connected to it, the problem seems to be exclusive to this laptop with the fresh install on it.I tried the 'connect to hidden network' option and it doesn't connect, it just keeps asking for the psk

I recently switched to openSUSE 11.2 and updated to 11.3 almost immediately. Everything appears to be working well, with the minor exception of my wireless.I go to connect and one of two things will happen. Either it will hang in a constant loop of preparing to connect and then asking for the security key and then back to connecting. That or it will just not connect period.I'm using a dell wireless 1397 mini-card.
lspci gave me:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub (rev 07)

I'm using Fedora 13 , wireless card:Intel 512AN_MMW kernel version:2.6.33.6-147.fc13.i686 below is my problem: when i finished install F13,i can use Wireless card surfing internet i have multiple ap's , and if the ap set with same ssid and different channel, i can roaming between ap's if i'm accessing the internet ,
otherwise, it won't change to greater signal ap if i'm not using the internet , does this condition normally ?
The other question is , if i'm using different ssid , like "wlan01" "wlan02", can i roaming between this two ap's automatically?

So I've been trying to install OpenSUSE on my laptop. The installation went smoothly and then the trouble comes: connecting to the internet. It seems that every time I run a KDE based distro, I have trouble connecting. I've done everything I can think of (which wasn't much): I've run the YaST and tried setting it up that way. I've tried using the terminal and iwconfig to no avail.

In openSuse I can connect to a wireless network. It says that it is connected, and I can open the router page (http://192.168.1.1/basic.html). But I cannot load any other pages. Nothing else recognizes internet either; I tried using konqueror, YAST and wget with the command line, and none of them could load anything. It is not a router problem or a wireless card problem because both Ubuntu and Kubuntu can connect, from the same computer. I know this is odd because in the only other thread I could find with this issue, it was a different distro and installing openSuse seemed to fix it.

I have wired ethernet to my laptop. I want to be able to share my network connection with my iphone.
I have set up masquerading:
I have configured my wlan0 to a static IP - 192.168.1.100/24 call iwconfig to configure wlan0
I see the network pop up on my phone, I configure my own statis IP there, 192.168.1.100 as gateway
Success - I can connect to google for about 30 sec.
If I check iwconfig again, there is no longer a essid specified but a "CELL" value instead - and this is changing every 10 sec or so.
With the above I'm quite happy that I've configured everything OK except for iwconfig - why is it dropping my config?
I've a broadcom wifi nic and I'm using ndiswrapper.

I'm running an HP Pavillion ZV6000, AMD 64 Athlon.I think that I'm not getting wireless because it never really shuts down. I've tried shutting down from the term (what I was used to from Damn Small) and it drops the window manager and then freezes on the black screen . . . I then have to do a hard shutdown (holding the power button).I've tried making sure that I don't have a USB stick in . . . shutdown wireless moduals, still the same.I'm starting to forget my keyboard commands, being that I am having to use windows to get on-line . . . like now!

I just loaded 10.10 onto a stock hp pavalion zt3000 and everything is running fine except it won't detect my college's wifi network. It picks up everything else and runs without a hitch. (I'm actually on my work's wireless network atm) The network is not hidden and doesn't have any encryption. The wireless is on and has even detected other networks when it doesn't see the school's. I searched but couldn't find much on this specific problem but Im guessing/hoping its something simple here's the hardware: Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter (rev 04)
here's ifconfig:

I have two wireless access points in my home network. A Linksys upstairs and a Watchguard Firebox downstairs. The Firebox acts as the gateway for my network to the internet (well, the ISP's router anyway). I invariably use my Hardy Heron installed HP laptop downstairs, less than 10ft from the Firebox. The signal bar for the Firebox shows three bars, the linksys just one. So, why the heck does my Ubuntu insist on connecting to the Linksys everytime?! I can manually switch it afterward but still, it's annoying.

I recently purchased a WNR3500L wireless router and it works great with Windows. However, when I boot up Ubuntu 11.04, it cannot find other wireless networks in the area. Despite this, my internet connection speed to my computer remains unaffected...the only issue is that it cannot pick up other networks.
From searching on Google and on these forums, I've learned that most routers don't work "out of the box" with Ubuntu...NDISWrapper and additional drivers must be installed in order to make them work to their full potential. But alas, I am a super-newb...I don't know what to do from here on to get my Netgear WNR3500L router to pick up other wireless signals.

I am no longer able to run K3B. I get an error "Executable: k3b PID: 8469 Signal: 11 (Segmentation fault)". I tried uninstalling and reinstalling K3B but still the same. I googled the error message and have not come up with any results other than it seemed to be a bug with earlier versions of Linux than mine. One change I have made to my system is updating the kernel to 2.6.35-30 generic

I have been using windows 7 for awhile now, and i was using connectify (an internet connection sharing program that turns your laptop into a wireless router), and i'm planning on completely switching to Linux from a dual boot, and i was wandering if there is a way to share an internet connection (mainly to my PS3) on Ubuntu 10.04 x64, and wirelessly if possible, though i wouldn't mind if it was through Ethernet.

I have a WUSB54GC v.1 wireless USB adapter which I use to connect to my home network. For some reason, over time my reception has been getting worse. I'm not sure if this is due to the router or the adapter. In addition, when the signal strength dips below 50%, I can no longer receive email or browse the web. This is only a problem with Ubuntu - when I had WinXP installed, I could access the internet mostly regardless of the signal strength.
I started a year ago with the adapter plugged directly into the computer. After a while I found it necessary to use an extension cord to place the adapter outside my room, closer to the router. A while later it was time for another extension cord, and now my reception has gotten worse again, but I can't extend it any further.

I had the Wireless Broadband working. It stopped working after I closed the laptop (suspend). Also the wifi will not connect until reboot. Now the entry for the Wireless Broadband is gone, and the tab for it is greyed out as well.I would be happy to submit this as a bug and assist with the debugging process.

I've been running Karmic since it was officially released on my Dell Studio 17 (specs are in my signature) with a Broadcom wireless half mini wireless card.hen I installed Karmic, it gave me the option to install proprietary drivers for my video card as well as 2 Broadcom drivers, STA and one of the BC43 drivers. I installed all of these, and the only problems I had were with the audio. I spent a few days troubleshooting the audio and finally got PulseAudio set up for my card.
Almost 3 months later, I was making use of my wireless network at home, as I had done plenty of times over the previous 3 months, when I closed the lid (thus putting the computer into sleep mode) and took it to the hospital to stay with my fiancé¥ after her surgery. When I got to the hospital, I couldn't get their network to show up. Network Manager didn't even recognize the network. We had also brought my fianc饧s laptop (same machine with a slightly less powerful CPU and only 4 GB of RAM). She is running Windows 7, which detected the hospital's network with no problems. After trying to ad-hoc the hospital network with no success, I finally just gave up and played Sudoku and toyed with some graphics stuff in GIMP until we came home. Upon returning home, however, I was shocked that my card didn't even detect our home network.
I have been unsuccessful for the past 3 days in getting Network Manager to identify our wireless network. The wired network connects without issue and I am able to make use of a USB Belkin adapter, which identifies all 7 of the various wireless networks in my neighborhood, including our home network. While I would be able to simply carry my Belkin adapter with me in order to make use of wireless networks, I would really like to solve this problem with my Broadcom adapter. I've gone through the Ubuntu Wireless Network Troubleshooting guide, but I still can't get it to workOutput of lshw -C network:
Code:
*-network

Is there a way to keep a wireless AP from generating an RF signal at all until it gets pinged by a client which:
1) Knows it's (the AP's) IP, name, passcode, and operating port,
2) Knows which frequency, and periodic ping-rate to use,
3) And, identifies itself not only appropriately, and timely, but only pings twice before it falls silent, awaiting a response, all others would over run the limit, and thusly fail the AP screening and the AP would totally ignore them, logs the attempts, and stays cold, dark, and silent.
In short, only one (1) device is capable of turning it on.
Seems to me that conceptually, it's quite do-able. Has it been done?

I installed WICD because I was looking around the internet and the Ubuntu forums said that it was the best fix for the Network Manager not working. I added the source and installed the package like the Ubuntu site said. I go to Applications => Internet => Wicd Network Manager. It says no wireless networks found. I know that the router is working because my sister is right here next to me playing Maplestory on her laptop! When I do the lshw -C network function in the terminal it is only bringing up two things: the network controller and the ethernet controller. I used Yahoo Answers as my first goto and the answers there said that Linux doesn't have the drivers for the router. I have a Netgear Wireless-N 300 Router WNR2000 and a Dell Inspiron 1750, if that helps. Can someone give me a link to the drivers or tell me in detail what to do?

For some reason my laptop cannot keep a connection with any wireless signal. I have tried several networks and resetting the router and it just doesnt work. Im not sure why...i have selected to connect to a certain network and it either takes forever to finally connect or doesnt connect at all. also when it does connect it only last a few minutes, meanwhile using win7 i have no issues with the connection.
