SUSE :: Wireless Connecting To The Internet
Jan 31, 2010
So I've been trying to install OpenSUSE on my laptop. The installation went smoothly and then the trouble comes: connecting to the internet. It seems that every time I run a KDE based distro, I have trouble connecting. I've done everything I can think of (which wasn't much): I've run the YaST and tried setting it up that way. I've tried using the terminal and iwconfig to no avail.

I've searched all night for similar threads and either don't understand the instructions or find that my computer simply isn't the same! I've tried to gather as much information as I felt needed when people asked in other threads. Just use small words around me, I'm really *that* technologically inadequet. Why I bought a linux ubuntu computer is still a mystery!
I'm having trouble connecting to my home's wireless internet, which is linksys. I can connect via wire just fine, but I want to access my built-in wireless card. How do I set up the wireless for this machine? Here's the info of what version of Ubuntu and about the card.
Ubuntu 8.04.1

What do I do with this information? If I could transfer edible cookies through this computer, I totally would.

This problem started a few days ago. Whenever I attempt to connect to a wireless connection via network manager, my computer completely crashes, going to a black screen with no input from keyboard or mouse. It forces me to reboot using the power switch. Everything works fine when I connect to an ethernet cable, so I am sure it's a problem with my wireless driver.
I already tried (successfully) reinstalling the ath9k driver via compat wireless as was the advice from other forums, but this had no effect. I'm currently running opensuse 11.4, and haven't had this problem until a few days ago
This problem seems a bit ridiculous for a task as simple as connecting to a wireless network, so I'm convinced that either there is some sort of relatively simple way of fixing it, or windows really is the only decent operating system out there..

I tried to setup sharing to connect Ethernet and wireless. I want Ethernet connected to desktop A, and wireless connected to another laptop(B), with my laptop acting as an AP. I set the network settings in Firestarter: Internet for wireless, local network for Ethernet. I want to share Internet from laptop B over the network. Internet won't work from my laptop since it seems to use the wrong interface.(Since the desktop is sharing Internet, although not on Internet usually when connected via Ethernet. And of course DNS/Gateway IPs aren't set for wlan0 since it's acting as an AP.) SMB wouldn't work for desktop A and laptop B: laptop B could detect desktop, but reports error "Path not found".

I'm connecting to my wireless, but I can't connect to the Internet, not even via an IP address.
(*) Can not open web pages via IP address.
(*) Can ping internal hardware no problem.
(*) I can connect to the Internet via Ethernet no problem.
(*) I used to be able to connect via wireless on this computer. No settings changed in the interim.
(*) Several other computers currently connected & accessing Internet via the same wireless - no problem.
(*) Based on other posts, I disabled the avahi daemon, but this had no effect.

I have never seen this before but to connect to the internet either wired or wireless I have to connect to a broadband connection as well. I am currently using wireless; I connect to ISP with wireless but in order to access the internet I have connect to the wireless connection through my broadband connection(This is where I enter a user name and password.). I'm not sure why this is, I have always just plugged an Ethernet cable in and the computer just knew I guess.
I am using ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso that I had put onto a USB drive. It booted fine, but when I tried accessing the internet I couldn't. I was able to connect to the ISP, but I couldn't find any settings for a broadband connection. My computer is a Acer Aspire One Netbook 250

CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz
1.60 GHz 1.99 GB of RAM

I have a wireless router, but my desktop computer is connecting to it, or maybe to the modem, by an Ethernet cable. It has a built-in wireless card, so just as an experiment, I tried to connect to my network wirelessly. It didn't work. And not only did I not get any internet connection, I can't get any internet through the wired connection either. The internet works fine with Windows Vista (I'm dual-booting), as well as when I boot up Backtrack off of a Live DVD. I can still access my router's config page by going to 192.168.2.1 on a web browser, but I can't access anything else.

my laptop, an Acer Aspire 5050, recently broke horribly. However, after giving it to an IT teacher at my college, he fixed it, but now the operating system is OpenSuse 11.2 (It was Windows Vista Home Basic before). I have never used OpenSuse, or any Linux before, but everything seemed fine. However, I discovered that I can no longer pick up my wireless internet signal - why is this and what can I do to fix it?! Be aware I am not a computer man, and will not understand complicated technical language.

In openSuse I can connect to a wireless network. It says that it is connected, and I can open the router page (http://192.168.1.1/basic.html). But I cannot load any other pages. Nothing else recognizes internet either; I tried using konqueror, YAST and wget with the command line, and none of them could load anything. It is not a router problem or a wireless card problem because both Ubuntu and Kubuntu can connect, from the same computer. I know this is odd because in the only other thread I could find with this issue, it was a different distro and installing openSuse seemed to fix it.

I have wired ethernet to my laptop. I want to be able to share my network connection with my iphone.
I have set up masquerading:
I have configured my wlan0 to a static IP - 192.168.1.100/24 call iwconfig to configure wlan0
I see the network pop up on my phone, I configure my own statis IP there, 192.168.1.100 as gateway
Success - I can connect to google for about 30 sec.
If I check iwconfig again, there is no longer a essid specified but a "CELL" value instead - and this is changing every 10 sec or so.
With the above I'm quite happy that I've configured everything OK except for iwconfig - why is it dropping my config?
I've a broadcom wifi nic and I'm using ndiswrapper.

I have HP mininote 2133 with Suse SLED 10. I am trying to connect internet via bluetooth and a mobile phone. The machine itself does not have bluetooth, but it recognizes the Belkin bluetooth gadget, which I inserted into the USB port. I started the bluetooth with Yast and "Information about the equipment (I don't know what the correct term is in English, because my OS is in Finnish language)" tells that there is Belkin Bluetooth adapter connected. But my mobile phone cannot find my computer (there is nothing wrong with the phone, because it can find other computers!) when I try to pair up the phone and the computer. What should I do to connect?

I've been trying to figure out how to set up vsftpd on a test machine to emulate the ftp setup on our current ftp server. I was able to track down part of what I needed with the gracious help of poster AlucardZero on this forum, who pointed out that the vsftpd process likely being run via xinetd.
I've managed (or so I thought) to set everything up correctly - but I cannot connect to my test box as the user the ftp client program we're using expects. I can see in the vsftpd log that I'm making contact, but the client program is automatically failing, and attempts to get in from the Windows command line (ftp <ip>) request user and password, then fail out with '530 Login incorrect'.
Everything I've seen online so far indicates that the ftp login for a local user (with vsftpd configuration settings including anonymous_enable=NO and local_enable=YES) should be the same as the 'normal' login for that user, and that the passwords should be the same as well. This is the case on the current FTP server, where a Windows command line login uses the same password as attempting to su into the user in question. On my test machine, I can su into the user in question with the password as well. I simply cannot seem to connect with this user via ftp.
Below are the things I've found so far during my search on the two servers:
Code:
I'm obviously missing something simple, because I've read many posts on this site and others concerning successful setups - I simply haven't managed one on my own. Most of these eventually boiled back down to this howto page, and I've tried to follow the 'add and change user' instructions shown there to no avail.

I made some tests with a router without security and my internet connexion worked without any problem. But if I activated the wep security (or wpa it is the same behaviour) suse 11.1 won't connect in any way.
I used knetwork manager and traditional ifup method, both failed to connect.
I saw, using iwconfig that in both cases (wpa or wep) I was associated with the AP but dhclient won't work in any way, I was always in the APIPA...
I checked if there weren't any access control (mac address filtering, ...) and all the settings in the router were off to give me full access. Including the firewall set to off. The DHCP feature was on in both cases.
I noticed that the firewall must be on in suse 11.1 otherwise I couldn't have any connections even if I disabled wep or wpa...

I'm try to setup a wireless network with my linksys wireless router and my HP laptop dual booting Vista & Suse 11.2. I have the vista networked, just fine. Where I can share files and the printer connected to my desktop. But I want to be able to use Suse in the same way, full time and to stray away from Vista. My wife and kids like easy. So I'm trying to transform them and show them something new.

I created a Live CD with Ubuntu 10.4 Desktop, in which everything seems to work except Firefox, or internet connections in general. I've tried several other Linux distros with the same results. The DSL modem is on and working (USB Westell Wirespeed duel connect modem), works with Windows XP (native OS on this computer) but not with this live cd.
Ive been inside the network manager, and have only one connection setup which is DSL and automatically connect. But when it looks for a connection, none is found (the tab on the upper right corner of the desktop with the exclamation mark).
The live cd connects at work, but it's through a server and connected to that via ethernet, so that's a completely different setup.
I've seen countless other instances of connectivity issues, and it all seems to involve hours of testing, command line editing, and other things that more often than not produce no results.

I'm running OpenSuse 11.4 with kernel (2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop i686) and KDE 4.6.00 "release 6".When I first installed the system the KNetworkManager found my wireless network. After entering my details it suddenly couldn't find it any more and hasn't found it since (even after re-install). My network is definitely working. I did try and set it up with ifup but it still couldn't find any network. Unfortunately I don't know anything about networks even less about wireless ones. Many thanks in advance.

I have been through a lot of posts and was still unable to connect to the internet using wvdial utility after doing all the changes. I being a newbie to this operating system, didn't know how to get started. After going through a lot of posts, I came across an application that is going to be a part of Fedora 12 called ' blueman '. It is used to connect to the internet using a gprs enabled phone via bluetooth. It integrates itself with Network Manager making it even more easier to use. To install it type the following commands in the terminal:
su
Type in your password and hit enter. Then type
yum install blueman
The application is only 575kb and will install instantly. And after a reboot fedora will show an applet related to that application. Open it and click search to list all available devices and select your phone and then select bond to pair your phone with your computer ( if it isn't already). After bonding right click your phone and select serial ports>dial up service. this will make the gprs/edge/3G connection to appear in network manager and selecting it will connect your computer to the internet.
This was the bluetooth way. If you want to connect through USB, just plug in your phone and select PC Suite mode in your phone. The fedora installation will automatically detect your phone as a modem and the connection will appear in the network manager.
This works on all N series Nokia phones and also most other phones as well.
