Jul 6, 2010I have been using windows 7 for awhile now, and i was using connectify (an internet connection sharing program that turns your laptop into a wireless router), and i'm planning on completely switching to Linux from a dual boot, and i was wandering if there is a way to share an internet connection (mainly to my PS3) on Ubuntu 10.04 x64, and wirelessly if possible, though i wouldn't mind if it was through Ethernet.

Apr 3, 2010For some reason my laptop cannot keep a connection with any wireless signal. I have tried several networks and resetting the router and it just doesnt work. Im not sure why...i have selected to connect to a certain network and it either takes forever to finally connect or doesnt connect at all. also when it does connect it only last a few minutes, meanwhile using win7 i have no issues with the connection.

It ran with ndiswrapper.1.51.
Yesterday I installed the live-CD Fedora 10 on a new partition in another hard drive and so I have Fedora 10 but WITHOUT Internet connection.
I tried to install Ndiswrapper but the 'make' command doesn't exist in my Fedora 10 !
What are all the things I need to download from Internet to ensure the several commands like 'make uninstall', 'make', 'make install'... and to ensure installing Ndiswrapper ?

Jul 17, 2009I am a convert from Ubuntu (9.04 kept freezing on my laptop; when it did work, many packages it seemed were outdated--ie only Eclipse 3.2, rdesktop was messed up [and apparently is also in Fedora]), and I am having some trouble with getting my wireless working.I am running Fedora 11.First off, there is a problem when trying to connect when using DHCP. NetworkManager gets to the second green dot, and then after a short while I am given a message that the connection was disconnected.
Configuring the interface manually, not using DHCP, allows the connection to complete. However, the internet is very slow. There is a 15-30 sec delay before website loading actually commences, and then another delay each time an ad must be fetched from another server.How can I fix this delay? I know I have encountered it in earlier versions of Ubuntu, but I can't remember how I fixed it.About the rdesktop problem, if anyone is able to help [maybe I should post another thread?], the cursor color (the color of the pointer) is inverted---where it should be white it is black, and where it should be black it is white. I use rdesktop a lot to connect to my terminal server in my basement. Any idea how to fix it?

Networking :: Use The Laptop With The Wireless Connection To Share The Internet Connection?
Feb 4, 2010I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.

May 11, 2011Is there a way to keep a wireless AP from generating an RF signal at all until it gets pinged by a client which:
1) Knows it's (the AP's) IP, name, passcode, and operating port,
2) Knows which frequency, and periodic ping-rate to use,
3) And, identifies itself not only appropriately, and timely, but only pings twice before it falls silent, awaiting a response, all others would over run the limit, and thusly fail the AP screening and the AP would totally ignore them, logs the attempts, and stays cold, dark, and silent.
In short, only one (1) device is capable of turning it on.
Seems to me that conceptually, it's quite do-able. Has it been done?

Mar 24, 2010my laptop, an Acer Aspire 5050, recently broke horribly. However, after giving it to an IT teacher at my college, he fixed it, but now the operating system is OpenSuse 11.2 (It was Windows Vista Home Basic before). I have never used OpenSuse, or any Linux before, but everything seemed fine. However, I discovered that I can no longer pick up my wireless internet signal - why is this and what can I do to fix it?! Be aware I am not a computer man, and will not understand complicated technical language.

Now I have a new problem, probably caused by the problem above. I have a connection (so the network manager says) but no internet. I checked the network settings by using the ifconfig command in a terminal. This tells me that I have an address of 10.43.42.2 (or similar) which should be something like this 192.168.x.x.
I had already tried to use a command like "ifconfig release" but this didn't work. I know too much windows like but i had to try something. I also had the connection properties checked and changed to my network settings. After i did this I had still the same address (10.43.42.2 or similar).
Unless someone knows what is going on I'd like to know how to refresh of renew my IP address from the DHCP server.
Some information about my hardware and drivers:
NIC vendor: Atheros Communications Inc.
NIC chipset: AR2413 (i guess, i do not have my laptop with me at the time of writing)
Old driver: ath5k
New driver: ath_pci (installed from madwifi)

Jul 4, 2010I just installed ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. everything was working fine until i installed firestarter. i didnt like it and uninstalled it. when i did that i lost my wireless signal icon at the top of the screen, firefox starts up in offline mode, and limewire says that network connection is lost. i just want it back the way it was before installing firestarter. please help, i dont want to reinstall ubuntu if i dont have to.

Dec 6, 2010I had been happily using a wireless connection for about two weeks. The connection then went down for a few days. Since it came back up, I can connect to the network, but cannot access the internet. Other users of the network can both connect to the network, and access the internet, though people have experienced the same problem as me the last time the network went down (they could connect to the network but not access the internet). I have tried deleting and re-starting the connection, to no avail. I have looked around the forums, but haven't found anything that can help: do any of you have any suggestions? Jul 3, 2011We just set up a password for our wireless router (D-link DIR-615). WPA personal. After doing that, I can no longer connect to the internet. I can connect to the wireless router, however. Same problem for the Apple Macs in the house. We called Dlink. The fix for a Mac was to add DNS servers (4.2.2.2) under TCP/IP But there doesn't seem to be anywhere to specify a DNS server in Ubuntu.

Aug 25, 2010I have windows 7 dual-booted with ubuntu. Im having issues with ubuntu however and i am very new to using linux (sorry). When i intalled ubuntu and ran on it a seperate partition everything seemed to work fine until i tried connecting to the wireless internet in my university. This is what's driving me crazy. When i first turn ubuntu on it connects normally to the internet, and i can usually get onto google for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, the wireless loses its connection and the internet shuts off, even though it can still detect the wifi in the area. I try to reconnect but it consistently fails... I also get some sort of .local avashi error message (dont remember what it said exactly) for a brief moment and then it fades away. Can someone tell me what to do? This is driving me crazy. btw, i have a realtek rtl8191 wlan nic driver installed on windows, so im assuming thats the driver installed on linux to. Do i need to install a different version like kubuntu or xubuntu?
