General :: Wireless Roaming - Won't Change To Greater Signal Ap If Not Using The Internet
Jul 9, 2010
I'm using Fedora 13 , wireless card:Intel 512AN_MMW kernel version:2.6.33.6-147.fc13.i686 below is my problem: when i finished install F13,i can use Wireless card surfing internet i have multiple ap's , and if the ap set with same ssid and different channel, i can roaming between ap's if i'm accessing the internet ,
otherwise, it won't change to greater signal ap if i'm not using the internet , does this condition normally ?
The other question is , if i'm using different ssid , like "wlan01" "wlan02", can i roaming between this two ap's automatically?
my laptop, an Acer Aspire 5050, recently broke horribly. However, after giving it to an IT teacher at my college, he fixed it, but now the operating system is OpenSuse 11.2 (It was Windows Vista Home Basic before). I have never used OpenSuse, or any Linux before, but everything seemed fine. However, I discovered that I can no longer pick up my wireless internet signal - why is this and what can I do to fix it?! Be aware I am not a computer man, and will not understand complicated technical language.
I'm doing some research into ip roaming and haven't come across a whole lot. My definition of IP roaming is the client / server changing of IP addresses on a regular basis using a pre-set number of IP addresses that both client and server have knowledge of. Specifically I'm interested in if anyone knows of any Linux applications that allow for IP address changing on regular intervals.
I would like to use ulimit -St <some number> to stop a process form running once the process has exceeded the amount of CPU time specified in the ulimt arg.
I have been able to get ulimit -t (or -Ht) to kill my process, but I need the signal to be something other than 9 and other than SIGXCPU.
Is there a way to have ulimit issue a kill -<somthing else> when the cpu time specified has been exceeded?
i have both windows XP and suse linux installed in my hp pc with monitor HPL1710. when i in stalled Scientific LInux (cern) in the unallocated space using default partirtion it is in stalled. unfortunatately i have choosen the screen resolution to be 1600*1400. So when i try to reboot it says:
Code:
Input signal out of range change settings to 1280*1024-60Hz I have no idea what to do ? I dont find any scientific linux sub forum . so i am sending the thread here.
My box: Dell Inspiron 1545. lspci results below. I have enabled the Broadcom STA restricted driver.Problems:1. I am noticing in Ubuntu (using Network Manager and Wicd) that I am unable to connect to wireless signals tha are very weak. In my other OS (dual boot), I am able to connect to these weak signals.2. And the speed of these networks is much slower, and the disconnect rate is much higher than in my other OSI am THRILLED with Ubuntu otherwise, just looking to fix this issue so I can use Ubuntu as my primary OS.Could this be an Broadcom STA issue, or Software config issue? etc? Obviously not hardware cause hardware is same on other OS.
Code: ~$ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub (rev
I'm having problems connecting to a wireless network on my Dell inspiron 1520. i can't seem to enable wireless roaming on ubuntu and i get various error messages when i try.
When i run iwconfig, i get:
running iwlistscan gives me:
When i right click the network manager, there is no "enable wireless" option. I know that wireless works since i used it last night on windows, and the radio is turned on.
I'm running ubuntu 10.10, in a Gateway M-6750. I can't get my wireless to work properly.
After I lose my wireless signal, I can't connect to a network again. I have to restart my computer or, remove the ndiswrapper module and insert it again so that I can connect to the network again.
I do this with:
Also, there are sometimes when the computer freezes up when trying to search for a signal.
I'm getting an error when I try and zip a large file on Linux because it is too large for zip to deal with. what commands I can use to get around this?
This is the error I'm getting:
zip error: Entry too big to split, read, or write (file exceeds Zip's 4GB uncompressed size limit)
I am totally new to unbuntu, I am trying to download ubuntu desktop but the message from IE 9 returns that "download greater than 12 hours"and that is that! my dsl connection is 6Mb and I do not know what to do.
I have a Ubuntu NAS set up with two 1.5TB in a mirrored array. We recently needed more storage and will constantly be adding to this machine. We added 2 2TB drives in a striped array. What I'd like to do is find all directories totaling 10GB+ on the mirrored array and move them over to the striped array to increase storage on the mirrored array for smaller, more important data. I've tried:
1. How sum of system time and user time can be greater than real time ? 2. Even though my program is not waiting for any I/O the real time is smaller than system time as shown
root@chaitu:/home/chaitu/Desktop/Chk# time ./new real0m0.001s user0m0.000s sys0m0.004s
i'm using Fedora 13 with wireless card: Intel 622 ANHMW i'm testing the roaming quility under F13, if i set 3 ap's with same SSID "51g" and different channel "1" "6" "11" I can roaming from ap's when the strength of ap is less than 50%(maybe) but if the strength of ap1 is greater than 70%(maybe) ,
i can't roaming to another ap2 although the laptop just put beside ap2
1. can i set some files that indicate what strength F13 will detect another ap ?
2. when the ap's strength less than a value, it take about 30's or more to detect & transfer from weak ap to strength ap, does that situation normal? or how to speed up the ap's roaming?
My PC is connected directly to the cable modem. I would like to use my PC's WiFi card to share my internet connection with my Android phone and laptop so I can avoid buying a wireless router.
I have an Apple Aluminium keyboard. To the left of 1 key I have the less/greater (< >) key, not grave/tilde (` ~). xmodmap does not work for me: layout switching (done with setxkbmap) resets my xmodmap changes. .Xmodmap file does not help either. How do I remap the tilde key?
I have been using windows 7 for awhile now, and i was using connectify (an internet connection sharing program that turns your laptop into a wireless router), and i'm planning on completely switching to Linux from a dual boot, and i was wandering if there is a way to share an internet connection (mainly to my PS3) on Ubuntu 10.04 x64, and wirelessly if possible, though i wouldn't mind if it was through Ethernet.
I have a WUSB54GC v.1 wireless USB adapter which I use to connect to my home network. For some reason, over time my reception has been getting worse. I'm not sure if this is due to the router or the adapter. In addition, when the signal strength dips below 50%, I can no longer receive email or browse the web. This is only a problem with Ubuntu - when I had WinXP installed, I could access the internet mostly regardless of the signal strength.
I started a year ago with the adapter plugged directly into the computer. After a while I found it necessary to use an extension cord to place the adapter outside my room, closer to the router. A while later it was time for another extension cord, and now my reception has gotten worse again, but I can't extend it any further.
i m working on roaming profile where linux is the server & windows is the client... i m implementing it using samba as pdc my linux version is 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.x86_64 but my samba server is not working windows is not authenticating my domain name following is the copy of my smb.conf file
Quote:
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
Everything works fine in doing this, however every time a user logs into the Windows Citrix Session the roaming profile created on the linux samba share creates their Windows Profile with a 755 perms. I understand that the default umask is (globally on my RHEL host is 022 ??) but in my smb.conf file the definition that is defined for the directory is set to a create mask of 0700. What is going on?
I just installed Fedora 12 on my EEE PC has weaker wireless signal that I have previously had with any other linux distro or windows.Has anyone else had this problem, and is there anyway to increase to wireless signal?
Is there a way to keep a wireless AP from generating an RF signal at all until it gets pinged by a client which:
1) Knows it's (the AP's) IP, name, passcode, and operating port,
2) Knows which frequency, and periodic ping-rate to use,
3) And, identifies itself not only appropriately, and timely, but only pings twice before it falls silent, awaiting a response, all others would over run the limit, and thusly fail the AP screening and the AP would totally ignore them, logs the attempts, and stays cold, dark, and silent.
In short, only one (1) device is capable of turning it on.
Seems to me that conceptually, it's quite do-able. Has it been done?
I installed WICD because I was looking around the internet and the Ubuntu forums said that it was the best fix for the Network Manager not working. I added the source and installed the package like the Ubuntu site said. I go to Applications => Internet => Wicd Network Manager. It says no wireless networks found. I know that the router is working because my sister is right here next to me playing Maplestory on her laptop! When I do the lshw -C network function in the terminal it is only bringing up two things: the network controller and the ethernet controller. I used Yahoo Answers as my first goto and the answers there said that Linux doesn't have the drivers for the router. I have a Netgear Wireless-N 300 Router WNR2000 and a Dell Inspiron 1750, if that helps. Can someone give me a link to the drivers or tell me in detail what to do?
I have Ubuntu 9.10 a dell laptop i am using a tew-644ub usb wireless adaptar and it's seeing signals but wont connect to any my network is unsecured and open. everytime i try it does this swirlly thing then says diconected. im using a diferent computer to post this so if there
I have CentOS 5 + Sendmail within the local network with Smarthosting settings. How my Laptops users will connect my local Sendmail server for sending / receiving e-mails while out of the office network. I have router but no firewall in place in local network.
For the past few months I've been using Ultimate Edition 2.3 on my laptop. Various problems I encountered convinced me to switch. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 today and after the install I can't pick up my wireless router on the list of available networks. I'm able to pick up every other one on my block, just not my own. My server and my roommates laptop can pick it up and are connected to it, the problem seems to be exclusive to this laptop with the fresh install on it.I tried the 'connect to hidden network' option and it doesn't connect, it just keeps asking for the psk
For some reason my laptop cannot keep a connection with any wireless signal. I have tried several networks and resetting the router and it just doesnt work. Im not sure why...i have selected to connect to a certain network and it either takes forever to finally connect or doesnt connect at all. also when it does connect it only last a few minutes, meanwhile using win7 i have no issues with the connection.
I just installed the latest version of Linux on my Dell Mini 910 and it's now not picking up my wireless signal. The wireless card is enabled so I'm not sure what's going on. Btw, I tried entering the smb command that was given to the other member about 4 threads down as he had the same issue. Didn't work though.
My laptop has sat in the same area for days, I've noticed that in Ubuntu I get a real low signal and can barely connect for a minute and on Windows I get like 3/5 bars. I don't understand what's going on. Is it a driver issue or something? My wireless card is Realtek RTL8187B and using the latest Ubuntu as of today. But just so everyone knows, I have google'd and search around for a few hours. I've seen many different types of problems that just wasn't like mine. Lots of people can't even get theirs to work and some people use different types of drivers. But Ubuntu detects my wireless card fine, I'm just having a signal strength problem. Because the Windows on my laptop has a much stronger signal as stated above.
