Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Through Modem Works But Not Through Wireless Router?

Jan 22, 2010

I just bought a TRENDNET TDM C4000 (=modem/ wiredrouter) and got it working. If I connect my computer with through the ethernet port directly, the internet will work. However, when I try connecting the ends of the ethernet cable on the modem and my wireless router, it's not transmitting. I know I set up the wireless router correctly because it worked with my previous modem. I just need to know how to configure my modem so that it works with my wireless router (D-Link DI-524).

I have a long wired ethernet wire to satisfy my academic needs for the internet at the moment but my mother is not able to surf the internet and it would be more convenient for myself to put the wire back to my desktop and have my laptop browsing wirelessly.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ethernet Cable Modem Can't Connect To Internet

I am using a cable modem wired to my PC via ethernet. My ISP is Road Runner, through Time Warner Cable.

I entered my IP address, Netmask, and DNS Servers into the network, not using DHCP. This was how I was able to achieve a network connection.

I am connected to the modem, but I cannot get internet.

I'm not very good with computers.If this isn't possible, how would I go about connecting the desktop to the internet?

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting A Modem Router With A Mobile Broad Band Umts Connection?

Feb 17, 2011

sometimes our ADSL connection gives up and we are left without internet connection for days until the problem gets fixed. I mean by this problem along the phone line. It affects all machines that connect to the internet through a Netgear WIFI Modem Router. I recently tried an alternative when this happens is to use a USB Huawei Mobile Broadband UMTS connection which works when you insert it in 1 laptop. Is there a way i could get the Netgear WIFI modem router to connect on that usb stick or PC that is online on that usb stick and give access to other machines that will want to connect to the web ?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Exchanged Modem/router For Same Model But Now Cannot Connect To Internet Using WEP

Dec 1, 2010

I had an ATT "2Wire" modem/router that was working but connection to the Internet was often poor. An ATT technician came to my home and swapped out the modem/router for the identical model. I changed the ESSID and WEP code to match the new unit and everything was fine with the following wireless units: a wireless desktop, two cellphones, three wireless Archos tablets, and a couple of e-reader tablets. So all seemed to be fine wirelessly. However...

My laptop (SuSE 11.0, KDE3) simply won't connect no matter what I do. I changed the ESSID and WEP info in the lappy exactly as was done with the other wireless devices named above. But no good. The lappy does see the modem/router (a good, strong signal appears in KNetworkManager). But it seems as if the modem/router is rejecting the lappy's attempted handshake using the new ESSID and/or WEP information.

I thought that perhaps there was something wrong with the lappy's wireless card, so I took it to a Starbucks to see if it would connect there on an open network, and it did without problem. So the lappy's wireless card appears to be working fine. It just won't talk to the encrypted modem/router at home. Here are the settings on the lappy. Hopefully something here is easily identified as the culprit. With all the clicking I've done it certainly is possible that I ticked something that should not have been ticked and just don't realize what I've done.

Network settings screen:
Global options tab:
Network setup method: user controlled with Network Manager
Change default route via DHCP (ticked)

[code]....

Why won't the new modem/router which is exactly the same as the old one except for the ESSID and WEP work with my lappy yet it does work with a bunch of other wireless devices?

Networking :: Connecting To Internet When 3G Modem Plugged In

Apr 25, 2009

I was recently asked to get a 3G ZTE 633 modem (not in stores) to connect to the internet whenever it was plugged in. I had it successfully working on my Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon machine but it does not work on Fedora 10 which is where it is required to work. When the 3G modem is plugged in I use a Udev rule to run usb_modeswitch which changes it from being in usb storage mode to being in modem mode. This part works fine. I then run a second udev rule (on the modem device), this should run a script which connects to the internet. Unfortunately it falls over here. The script does run but it will not connect. However if I run the script manually from root it works fine. I guess that it is a permissions issue.

The device permissions are:
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 188, 0 2009-04-26 11:31 ttyUSB0
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 188, 1 2009-04-26 11:31 ttyUSB1
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 188, 2 2009-04-26 11:31 ttyUSB2

The script and script folders permissions are:
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4.0K 2009-04-26 11:46 .
drwxr-xr-x 23 root root 4.0K 2009-04-26 11:13 ..
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 95 2009-04-26 11:46 run_internet

One thing to note is that there are three udev devices associated with the modem. They are ttyUSB0, ttyUSB1 and ttyUSB2. I use ttyUSB2 to talk to the modem when connecting. Here are the files. If you require any more let me know:

The first udev rule:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="2000", SYSFS{idVendor}=="19d2", RUN+="/usr/bin/usb_modeswitch"

The second udev rule:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0031", SYSFS{idVendor}=="19d2", MODE="0666", RUN+="/outputs/run_internet"

The script:
#!/bin/bash
/bin/echo script
/usr/bin/wvdial &
cp -f /etc/telstra_resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

The wvdial config file:
[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Init3 = ATS7=60 S30=0 S0=0
Init4 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","telstra.internet"
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Baud = 9600
New PPPD = no
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB2
ISDN = 0
Dial Command=ATD
Phone = *99#
Password = user@bigpond.com
Username = password
Stupid Mode = 1

So what am I missing? I suppose it is related to device permissions. Why does the "mode" command not work? With what rights do udev rules run?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Router Connecting ?

Jun 21, 2010

I have a computer running Ubuntu, and a MacBook Pro. I need to buy a decently cheap wireless router that I can hook up to my Ubuntu so that it will send wifi signals and I can use the wifi to go online with my MacBook Pro. I was about to get one today, but remembered how Ubuntu is picky about working with things like that. I'm only going to be using it to get signals around the house which isn't that big at all.

So what would be the cheapest and decently efficient wireless routers that I can use which Ubuntu will cooperate with?

Ubuntu Networking :: 3G USB Modem, In And Using Wireless Router Out To Lappy, Wii Ect?

Feb 7, 2010

3G USB modem, in and using wireless router out (via ethernet) to lappy, Wii ect.We don't have a phone line just mobile phone and mobile internet because it is mobile.I have a wireless router only but need wireless to improve my standing within the house because I am seen as a net hog!

I did come across a Virgin wireless modem but it is soooo painfully slow (tested it against the USB dongle modem 3-4kb same test 1 min later 280-300kb's USB.) The wife could make herself a cuppa just waiting for the facebook login page to load!Would it need to pass on the connection bcause the USB is fully setup? then wireless is setup or would it be required to have a 3rd security setting ect in between?It would be good to use a low spec computer because I have a few. Headless too, maybe?

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote SSH With Both DSL Modem And Wireless Router

Jul 28, 2011

I have an Ubuntu server that I need to access remotely while I am at school. The server's internet connection comes first through a DI-604 broadband router and then through a Netgear Wireless router:

ethernet wall jack --> Broadband Router --> Wireless Router --> Server's ethernet port

I can manage to get the SSH to work with the current IP address (dynamic) by connecting the server directly to the broadband router, but I cannot set up DNS (ddclient on the server, Namecheap for domain registrar and nameserver) with it. I can set up DNS on the router with no issue, as it has the DNS client built in, but I cannot get the SHH to connect through both the modem and the router as mentioned above. Best case scenario, this can be fixed without having to get anything new, but if that is the case, recommendations of a new setup

Other reference info - ISP at server is Verizon Fios, broadband router set to PPPoE.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect Only One PC At A Time To Adsl Router/modem For Internet Access?

I have 2 pcs at home. I dont have a switch so I can connect only one PC at a time to my adsl router/modem for internet access. In the past I had successfully connected the two PCs (NIC to NIC) to each other using the same ethernet cable which was supplied with my dlink adsl modem.

Recently the motherboard of on of my PC went bad so I replaced it with a new one. The problem is when I connect the two using the same Ethernet cable they won't connect. The lights on the Ethernet port won't light up. I can still connect both of them to the adsl router (NIC to Router) (one at a time).

Fedora Networking :: Connecting To Wireless Router ?

May 5, 2010

When fedora initially starts up, the network manager shows all the available wireless connections available to me. However, when I select my wireless connection, it will go through the loading process where it shows the two green dots and the circular moving blue streak, then it prompts me to put in the wpa password.

This is where the trouble starts...when i input my wpa password, it will proceed to attempt to connect to my network but it never succeeds in doing so--it will keep on asking me to input my wpa password. when i finally get sick of doing it over and over again, i just hit cancel instead of retrying to connect.

After i stop trying to connect, the network manager no longer shows all the available wireless networks--the list is completely empty, and i can find no way to get the list to show up again, with the exception of restarting my computer.

I am able to connect to the internet with a wired ethernet, but id like my wireless to work.

Ubuntu Networking :: EDUP Wireless Adapter Not Connecting To Router?

Jan 3, 2010

For several months I was using EDUP adapter with both my laptop that operated on Ubuntu 9.04 exclusively and a desktop that could also boot with XP. Soon after 9.10 was released I updated my laptop and was able to use the adapter to connect to the Net.Recently, I also updated the desktop but also made it exclusively a Linux machine. Unfortunately, I have been unable to get the wireless adapter to work again on the desktop.The OS recognizes the device as wlan0, and lsusb shows:Bus 003 Device 005: 0cde:0008 Z-Com Sitecom Wireless Network Adapter 100G+ WL -125The network manager recognises the availability of the wireless network and attempts to connect. After trying for a while it comes up with a dialog box "Wireless Network Authentication Required" and in response I enter the WPA password but with no success.The behaviour would indicate that I am entering the wrong password but I am not.I have checked it several times and compared with the password that works with the laptop.
