Red Hat / Fedora :: System Shuts Down After Login?

Feb 3, 2011

After I login as root, it displays the MOTD and shuts down. During the bootup process it says that Runlevel is set to 0. I checked through init and inittab, the runlevel was still 3. I didn't think this would be it because I'm already logging in, but I figured I'd try. I went through rc.sysinit, rc.local, shadow and profile and I cannot find a reason for it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Monitor Shuts Off After Boot Up And Login

Dec 28, 2010

About two months ago my Ubuntu desktop computer (running Ubuntu 10.04) started giving me trouble. The monitor would occasionally shut off after booting up and logging in and using it for a few minutes. Then this started happening every single time I booted up the machine, making it effectively useless. I decided to try a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10, and, luckily for whatever reason I was able to get the monitor to *not* shut off long enough to get this new installation to actually install. But now, after installing 10.10 the computer is doing the same thing, shutting the monitor off after boot up and/or login. Sometimes I can get to the login screen, sometimes I can even actually log in, but even after I log in, the monitor shuts off after a few minutes. I can access the BIOS just fine, of course, and I can get to the GRUB menu just fine by pressing ESC on boot up, but I cannot even get the root access on recovery mode to work for more than a few seconds before the monitor just shuts off - usually it shuts off right before I can even arrow down to select root access from the menu when I boot to recovery mode. In terms of hardware, I tried installing a new power supply, but that hasn't worked.

I also tried changing the GRUB command for the boot, where you go to the GRUB editor and add nomodeset, i915.modeset=1, i915.modeset=0 or xforcevesa after splash quiet, but that also doesn't work. The video/graphics card is just the built-in Intel video (PCI-E or something like that, part of the motherboard basically). It's an MSI motherbaord from a couple of years ago, American Megatrends, but the BIOS appears up-to-date. Anyway, I've tried everything and I am just about to give up. Ubuntu had been working fine for me for a couple of years on this machine, with no hardware changes, right up until that first week of November, 2010. Could there have been some automatic software update that ruined my machine? The OS is Ubuntu 10.10, and the Linux kernel is 2.6.35-22-generic. Also, if it matters, this same machine has had that hda-spurious response warning thing that appears on boot sometimes because of the Intel built-in audio configuration. That's been happening since a few versions of Ubuntu ago, so I don't know if it is related.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Cannot Login From Ctrl + Alt + F2 Screen

May 31, 2009

With my first kernel, that comes with Fedora 10 x86_64 installation DVD, I can use ctrl + alt + f2 from desktop, switch to terminal, and log in to any user.

The problem is:
Eventhough the login screen appears as usual with kernels 2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.x86_64 and 2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.x86_64, I can not login. When I enter username and password, the screen refreshes itself to its initial state, i.e., like when i hit ctrl + alt + f2 from desktop. I also tried ctrl + alt + f3, f4, f5 etc nothing changes. Also, I want to remind you that I can login from desktop terminal successfully.

Fedora Installation :: Apache Web Server Does Not Start Automatically Unless Login

Feb 20, 2009

I have a problem with running Apache web server. I think my problem is either I can not get httpd to load automatically or it's being blocked from external unless I'm logged in, don't know which. Or, I'm completely off base. Either way, being logged in solves the problem. Now I just need to fix it. This is a brand new server running latest apache and fedora 10 (all fully patched). Loaded from source to all default (non RPM directories - apache is /usr/local/apache2/... )

I modified the existing /etc/init.d/httpd script and had it point to the /usr/local/apache2 areas.I even did a chkconfig --add httpd and show it is on for run levels 2345.The problem is that when I reboot the server httpd does not load because I can not access the website. However, the minute I login to the server as a user (non-root) it automatically loads httpd and the website works. Then, when I logout, everything is inaccessible again. I even tried to put the commands in the /etc/rc.local script (or wherever it is).Same thing happens.I know this is a simple fix. Just don't know what it is. Is it related to SElinux? However, wouldn't SElinux create access problems regardless of being logged in or not? Once I'm logged in, everything automatically fixes itself (either it's a service load or a rights filter fix).

Remember, everything works perfectly as long as I'm logged in to the server (even as a non-root user). Just the act of logging in makes the web server accessible from to the rest of the world. However, when I logout, the web server is inaccessible.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Going Loopy - Nvidia Driver And DVI - Login Screen Went Black

Dec 24, 2009

I had a fully working Nvidia driver setup in FC 12 with no problems using an old LG monitor (LCD panel) on a VGA connection. I have just replaced the monitor with a newer Dell model that has a DVI connection. I plugged it in and got nice Post Screen, FC 12 boot progress display but when it got to displaying the login screen it went black.

Ctrl +Alt+F2 took me to a command prompt where I can type commands no problem. If I change the driver to the Nouveau (and Chattr +a the xorg.conf file) I get a lovely gui. So far nothing I have tried has let me use the Nvidia driver. I have searched around Google and tried nvidia-xconfig, system-config-display, livna-config-display xrandr (which fails to work at all) but so far I have got no where.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Overheats Machine And Shuts Down System

Jan 21, 2010

I have done a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 (from the CD), single OS on the machine, it seems to be working perfectly alright (better than windows 7 which was previously installed).Only one problem I am facing right now is when I open lot of firefox tabs, I can hear that the processor or fan starts making a lot of noise and eventually system shuts down abruptly, i can feel that the machine heats up. Than I have to wait for few minutes to let it cool and than start again. If i use firefox with (lets say) 2-3 tabs open, it works ok. but when i open over 4-5 tabs, it goes mad.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Firefox Hangs System

Jul 20, 2010

everything else seems well with my FC13-x86-64 except firefox (3.6.4 and earlier versions too) VERY frequently hangs the whole system. only the mouse still working, keyboard not responding to ctrl-alt-del, ctrl-alt-function or any other key and even num-lock won't turn the led on. system is still remotely accessible through ssh so I can issue a reboot. same thing may have occurred with thunderbird but only once or twice and probably firefox was also running then. no problems so far with google chrome (but I have no flash plugin for that). FC5-x86-32 on my old PC has never had any of these problems.
