After I login as root, it displays the MOTD and shuts down. During the bootup process it says that Runlevel is set to 0. I checked through init and inittab, the runlevel was still 3. I didn't think this would be it because I'm already logging in, but I figured I'd try. I went through rc.sysinit, rc.local, shadow and profile and I cannot find a reason for it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAbout two months ago my Ubuntu desktop computer (running Ubuntu 10.04) started giving me trouble. The monitor would occasionally shut off after booting up and logging in and using it for a few minutes. Then this started happening every single time I booted up the machine, making it effectively useless. I decided to try a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10, and, luckily for whatever reason I was able to get the monitor to *not* shut off long enough to get this new installation to actually install. But now, after installing 10.10 the computer is doing the same thing, shutting the monitor off after boot up and/or login. Sometimes I can get to the login screen, sometimes I can even actually log in, but even after I log in, the monitor shuts off after a few minutes. I can access the BIOS just fine, of course, and I can get to the GRUB menu just fine by pressing ESC on boot up, but I cannot even get the root access on recovery mode to work for more than a few seconds before the monitor just shuts off - usually it shuts off right before I can even arrow down to select root access from the menu when I boot to recovery mode. In terms of hardware, I tried installing a new power supply, but that hasn't worked.
I also tried changing the GRUB command for the boot, where you go to the GRUB editor and add nomodeset, i915.modeset=1, i915.modeset=0 or xforcevesa after splash quiet, but that also doesn't work. The video/graphics card is just the built-in Intel video (PCI-E or something like that, part of the motherboard basically). It's an MSI motherbaord from a couple of years ago, American Megatrends, but the BIOS appears up-to-date. Anyway, I've tried everything and I am just about to give up. Ubuntu had been working fine for me for a couple of years on this machine, with no hardware changes, right up until that first week of November, 2010. Could there have been some automatic software update that ruined my machine? The OS is Ubuntu 10.10, and the Linux kernel is 2.6.35-22-generic. Also, if it matters, this same machine has had that hda-spurious response warning thing that appears on boot sometimes because of the Intel built-in audio configuration. That's been happening since a few versions of Ubuntu ago, so I don't know if it is related.
I want to create an unprivileged user account, say 'shutdown', which can be used only to shutdown the system. I followed the instructions in ut when I login into the system, I get this error 'Cannot execute /usr/bin/sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now: No such file or directory'.These are the configurations that I did

I have done a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 (from the CD), single OS on the machine, it seems to be working perfectly alright (better than windows 7 which was previously installed).Only one problem I am facing right now is when I open lot of firefox tabs, I can hear that the processor or fan starts making a lot of noise and eventually system shuts down abruptly, i can feel that the machine heats up. Than I have to wait for few minutes to let it cool and than start again. If i use firefox with (lets say) 2-3 tabs open, it works ok. but when i open over 4-5 tabs, it goes mad.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my Fedora Core distribution from 12 to 14. Everything worked fine, except for SQUID which refused to upgrade. I then went to rescue and installed SQUID using yum and then restarted the upgrade. It did finally upgrade the system and then asked for a reboot. Well, when I selected the new kernel option in the GRUB options, since I also have Winduhs, it gave a kernel panic. I tried booting into the older kernel and it worked. Now I see the users that are there in the system in the Graphical GUI login greeter screen. But none of the users get authenticated. I used the rescue option and removed graphical login and changed boot level to 3. I also enabled the root user. In the rescue mode, if I do a startx, everything works fine.
I logged off rebooted the system. When I login, I see the version is shown as Fedora Core 14, but the kernel was still the older one with Core 12. I again went to rescue and checked out GRUB and saw that it had no initrd for the new kernel. I created a initrd image with the mkinitrd command and then added it to grub. I again rebooted. This time it shows the correct kernel, but still the system does not allow any of the users to login. All the Logins fail. I have tried going to rescue and going to the system using 'chroot /mnt/sysimage' and doing a startx for Graphical. Everything works, but only with the Rescue mode in the DVD. The normal boot/login sequence does not work.
Incidentally when I do a 'yum distro-sync', I get something like this :

It still seems to believe its a Fedora Core 12 system. Another information is that when I leave rescue mode and do a normal boot without installation media, it starts doing some SELinux relabelling and reboots. Any pointers on how I can get the system working. I am able to work with the rescue mode way, with any user, as it does not ask for any password. I can even do startx and work on the GUI. All my data is also there. I just am unable to get the user authenticated using normal boot/login. I have tried using passwd -d username, but it gives an error :
passwd: libuser initialization error: could not open configuration file `/tmp/libuser.ElY0r9': No such file or directory
In fact, I am now in rescue mode only when I am writing and sending this.

View 13 Replies View RelatedFor a month or so now, I have been enabling ssh and opening port 22. I cron'ed the start and stop commands to leave them open only a few hours a day. After a bit, I checked my logs to find that some IP or another was attempting to brute force my root account.
I took little real threat by the offense.
(1) my system does not allow root to login and
(2) it would cut them off sooner than later when my system issued the stop command.

Today I log in to find that all of my log files, as viewed from the gnome log file viewer, were empty of entries from about noon yesterday and prior.
Though I haven't noticed anything at all out of the ordinary with my system, I would like to get more opinions on the matter. Would there be any conceivable way that this was an automatic system routine, a clean up action of something? Additionally, if I was indeed the victim of a hack, what can I do to further protect my system (keeping in mind that I do want to access my system via ssh from time to time)?
I'm hoping someone can help me out.I made configurations changes to/etc/pam.d/system-auth and /etc/pam.d/login. When these files are configured the way they are, I can't login and/or I can't login in the GUI interface and a terminal. Contents of /etc/pam.d/login

System was fine with :Ubuntu 9.04 (had also installed kde )then....I wanted to try some change to gdm so i downloaded gdm while building it , it asked "PAM" libraries to be installed so i installed PAM ... but ignored the instruction to reinstall SHADOW (library i guess..),Now :on booting system i get login menu but i am not able to login , it says some critical error occured

I was a user from China. I login Ubuntu 10.04 used gdm and kdm can't login. The login system just fash some times and go back to login sytem.
I can only use startx to login system.
And I see system Log, I find those log:

I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared).Why is this happening?Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy computer was working this morning and both hard drives were working fine, then all of a sudden for about two hours I was stuck with this "problem", then after fumbling and moving and stablizing things, then Windows works? See below for details. I've finally reinstalled both hard drives, but the one with the Linux partition doesn't work: it says nothing is discovered on the disk. I can't login at the LUKS login after grub starts, therefore I can't get into Linux, but Windows works?! I used to be able to go directly into Grub when the computer starts, I forgot how to do that but it doesn't matter. If you need details I'd be glad to provide them. I just wondered why Linux doesn't work, but Windows does. I have Linux & Windows on two different separate hard drives
View 5 Replies View Relatedyesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.
At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console

login: no shell permission denied
i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)
I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.

I've installed VMware server 2.x on my windows XP SP2 and installed Ubuntu 9.10 on the VMWare. I have noticed several times that the ubuntu machines shuts it down (not sure the time pattern but it could be that it shuts down after a certain minutes idle). As a result of that, I always have to restart it.
I checked the event log viewer, it looks like there's always a segfault just before it shuts down. I've pasted the last few lines of event log below.

I've been using Ubuntu on my desktop for a while and it worked like a charm. Three months ago, I decided to put a new cpu fan because the old one was gathering dust and I wanted to have lower cpu temps. I decided to buy an Scythe Kabuto, nd installed it with no problems. Windows XP works perfect, but the problems come when I try to start Ubuntu, both from a Live CD or from the HD. Ubuntu starts normally, but in a short period of time (2~15 minutes) the PC randomly shuts down. I've seen some errors when I restart and try to start Ubuntu again mentioning high CPU tempetatures. The fact is that the CPU temperature never reaches more than 65, so my guess is that there is some problems with the ACPI and temp reading.

I just added "export PATH=.:'printevn PATH'" to ~/.bashrc, then i can't use any commands, like "vim" or 'ls', it shows 'command not found'.
I cound't figure it out why. Then I logged out and tried to login. Another more serious problem occurred. after I type in login id and pass, it shows login seems to be right, but it doesn't login normally, but immediately bring me back to the login dialog box, and ask me to type log info again. I tried many times, it just constantly brought me back to the login page.
Since when I installed Squeeze I'm having this problem. You know how disturbing it is. I don't know if this is related in any way, but when I play music or watch video and do other things at the same time it looks like this happens more.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm running 11.2 and using a 1TB Maxtor OneTouch4Plus, P/N 9NT3A8-500,for all my mass storage. After about 10 to 30 minutes it powers off and won't turn back on until I either unplug/replug or reboot. Also if it is off and I wake up the PC from the screen saver the light will come on and flash a few times, but it will turn right back off. Here is a c/p of listing the USB when it is on and off:

I've tried to plug it into the last open USB port on the back of the machine, but it just lights up and does not do anything or show up in the lsusb response.
It gets real anoying when trying to do FTP or large downloads because it will even shut down when being used not just sitting idle. A few weeks back when I was getting a ham program setup and working with the serial port I was able to see a recent error log and saw all the failed attempts to access/see it. I figure it was all the times I logged back in after the screen saver was on. I don't know how to bring that up for you guys to look at unless I jack up the FlDigi program I was working on and a search can't refresh my memory on how to do it.
I just had my laptop in the shop for a month or so now (through Staples warrenty) I sent it in because my LCD monitor wasn't lighting up after a bit of use.
Got it back and they said my issue could not be replicated, so they just cleaned it and such and gave it back. Well so far it's been going pretty good, monitor stays on except when i turn on Heroes of Newerth.
What kind of problem is this and is it easily fixable?
