View 2 RepliesI'm wondering how you can post web content on your desktop like you can in windows. Like to have your XBL gamercard on your desktop sort of thing. But what I want it for mainly is to put the countdown to 10.10 on there.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhenever I add something to my desktop, if something with the same name has been on my desktop previously (like 'screenshot.png'), it will go to where it was previously, which sometimes causes the icons to overlap and what not.
I just wanted to know if it was possible to make the icons always go to the first open place.
Can i place a some cool shortcuts to different application on my desktop. How can I get these cool looking shortcuts. I also want to know that can I put some Gadgets on desktop like gadgets in Windows 7.

View 3 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded from FC10 using the DVD using upgrade option. I got all the way through the upgrade with no problems. However, upon reboot, when I get to my login screen, I sign in with my username and password but I get an error about kstartup manager. I think the gist of the message was it is missing and I think the error # was 127 (I think). KDE will not start. I also tried XFCE, but it will not start also.
What should I do?
I would like to adjust Xinerama to place 1 desktop on each of my 2 monitors and not stretch a single over both. With the current set up there is a problem with window placement upon opening new widows or context dialog boxes. I realize that I could adjust placement properties and select window placement with the mouse but this is still lacking in productivity. My monitors are not next to on another so this is more of a problem than it seems.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI need to install Sun Java JDK on Fedora. which directory should I install?
/usr/src
/usr/lib
/usr/share
or
/usr/local/src
/usr/local/lib
/usr/local/share
or other places would be better?
Another question is:
Fedora comes with a Java compiler. What's the difference this one with the Sun JDK? Do I really need to install Sun JDK?
I edit /etc/login.defs so it change the mail directory:

I have a second HDD oon the computer and the fedora system can see it so that is no problem. The problem is that when i want to make a folder or put a file on that HDD i get the message:
Error while copying "filename".
There was an error copying the file into /media/a53d6b68-7242-4f43-8cd9-8dfc1b592ad2.
Error opening file '/media/a53d6b68-7242-4f43-8cd9-8dfc1b592ad2/filename': Permission denied
How can i solve this? (and how can i make the disk called something else then a53d6b68-7242-4f43-8cd9-8dfc1b592ad2)
Also there is a folder on the disk named "lost+found" what is this and why is it there?
I can't seem to find the place where to change the themes. I want to get shiki-noble, mint, dust, wise, and the other shikis.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI decided to try and spruce up Gnome and found an applet called talika. Now to install this I have to install libwnck first. I used yum but can not seem to point talika to the place where libwnck is which is troubling. So a couple of questions. Is there an easier or better source to find customizations to add to the gnome desktop or is gnomelook the best option and how do I point talika to search for libwnck in the spot where yum put it? I have googled talika F12, searched the forums, and have not been able to locate anything.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I play a flash video in x86_64 with the latest 64bit flashplayer I will often get a grey rectangle after a few secs rather than playback. This is 100% reproducible if I restart firefox after playing a flash video and try to replay it.If I start firefox from a terminal I can see "invoke_NPP_Destroy: assertion failed:" type errors. Logging off and logging back on fixes, so I investigated which process needs to be restarted. Turns out to be gvfsd, so if you get a grey box do this in a terminal (as a normal user NOT as root)
Code:
killall gvfsd
/usr/libexec/gvfsd &
then refresh the page and all should be fine. (In fact the problem does not recur for an entire session until I login again) If others could report whether this fixes the same problem I can submit a bug report.
EDIT: I am using libflashplayer-10.0.32.18.linux-x86_64.so from here
About 3-4 years ago I installed a new harddrive in my computer (XP Pro) and moved the old system disk drive to be secondary. I installed Grub and partitioned it in half. I installed Fedora on one partition and installed XP on the other. Now I want to keep the XP and replace the Fedora with another Linux like Ubuntu or Mint to try them out. I am not sure what I need to do to replace the Fedora and keep XP. Could someone give some idea how this would be done? I don't remember exactly how I did it at the time or what tools I had used or what I will need.

I have a Fedora 12 box with a fresh install. I use ktorrent to download something, eg a series, into my home folder. Now, as root, I move (not copy) the folder with the downloaded files to /var/www/html/bob so that when someone opens http://myserver/bob/ they see the list of folders and files I have placed there. I also chmod the whole folder to 755 and chown to root.root. The folder I have just moved there is not displayed. So to work around it (before I realised it was SELINUX) I created a new folder. Now the folder is visible. Good. So now I move the files into the new folder and delete the old one. The files are displayed ... good. But wait, there's more: you cannot access (download) the files, even though they are visible.
1. How do I VIEW what context is assigned to these files?
2. How do I correct the context so that http server can allow people to access them?
3. How do we get the SELINUX authors to consider re-labeling files when they are moved from one place to another so as not to cause this fault?
I just upgraded to Fedora 15 from Fedora 14.... I think I could tolerate the new gnome shell if I could turn some of my tcl/tk and python gui scripts into things that I can store in the 'favorites' panel. In F14 I could create 'applets' ( with an Icon) that I could put in the top panel ( menu bar). Clicking on the icon would start the (gui based) script. Is there some way I can create a 'clickable' script in F15 and then place the result in the Favourites panel?

I was experimenting with desktop sharing on my kubuntu and now the 2 windows opens after every login. How to disable it?
Also whats with the keyring manager? can I configure so that it does not ask password every time I login? It feels like I have gone back a decade in desktop computing dealing with these nagging features.
Started up laptop tonight to find the desktop is upside down.
Ubuntu 10.10 gnome
Asus Eee PC 1215N
I have tried xrandr -o normal to no avail. Anyone ever run into this?
I've just installed the ubuntu server system on an old PC i'm going to be using as, you guessed it, a server. Because I like (some) graphical tools while configuring I also installed ubuntu-desktop on it afterwards.
The only problem is that I want to keep ubuntu-desktop, but that I don't want to boot into the (memory consuming) graphical interface by default.Does anyone know how to do that? (set the default boot to command-prompt). Also, does anyone have tips on packages I c an safely remove to clear up space and memory? (Like: openoffice, Evolution,Rhythmbox etc. are very obvious, but maybe some more hidden services and alike? Networkmanager e.g.?)
It takes about 30 seconds for the desktop to 'fully load'. When I login I see my background, but nothing else. Then you wait 30 seconds and you see the panels appear. Is there any way to fix this lag, and make it an instant load? Cause really it should not take that long to load a panel with not really anything on it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently updated to Ubuntu 10.04. On this same machine I've used Ubuntu for 3 or 4 years now. Upgrading from 8 - 9 - 10. I love Ubuntu and use it as my everyday work environment. Anyway, recently when I start my machine in the morning it boots to commandline instead of the desktop. For the last couple days I boot to safe-mode and do a package repair. Sometimes more than once. Eventually I get the desktop to start but it is annoying. When trying to boot to Fail Safe Graphics Mode(?) I get an error stating: "Fatal Server Error: No Screens." The message referred me to /var/log/Xorg/failsafe.log. Here is a snippet of the end of that log file:

Also, I'm using an NVidia graphics card on an HP machine. I installed the "current version" accelerated graphics driver which it says is proprietary.
Ever since a standard update a couple weeks ago I've had a myriad of problems, the biggest one though being boot time. Here's what happens when I turn on the machine: From bootloader (splash) to kernel loader (blinking cursor) = 50 sec. Kernel loader to splashscreen = 20 sec. Splashscreen to login prompt = 55 sec.login prompt to keyboard working = 26 sec. (wireless, wired works right away) Logging in to Desktop = 25 sec. 176 secs = ALMOST 3 MINUTES UNTIL I'M IN THE DESKTOP!!
That's worse than Vista. I've tried a number of things. For the Bios I read disabling floppy helps. I tried installing bootchart to see what's going on but it won't load save the .png file..? I installed bum and disabled some services. I tried profiling in grub... Nothing has made anything any better.
No idea why it takes so long for my wireless keyboard to start working. I'm really not sure where to start here since it's loading so slow at every point of the startup process.
I am new to ubuntu (from today) so I know nothing above, so I install it, and trying to load it, I have a problem if I try to start my session "ubuntu"or "ubuntu classic" I fall on the wallpaper, with a pointer loading, but loading is "eternal", the only way I have to use it is run "ubuntu classic (void)" or "ubuntu (secure mode)".
