Ubuntu :: Disable Desktop Sharing On Startup?
Aug 17, 2010
I was experimenting with desktop sharing on my kubuntu and now the 2 windows opens after every login. How to disable it?
Also whats with the keyring manager? can I configure so that it does not ask password every time I login? It feels like I have gone back a decade in desktop computing dealing with these nagging features.

I've just installed the ubuntu server system on an old PC i'm going to be using as, you guessed it, a server. Because I like (some) graphical tools while configuring I also installed ubuntu-desktop on it afterwards.
The only problem is that I want to keep ubuntu-desktop, but that I don't want to boot into the (memory consuming) graphical interface by default.Does anyone know how to do that? (set the default boot to command-prompt). Also, does anyone have tips on packages I c an safely remove to clear up space and memory? (Like: openoffice, Evolution,Rhythmbox etc. are very obvious, but maybe some more hidden services and alike? Networkmanager e.g.?)

Using 10.04. I use one machine mostly as a printer server: If it goes down for whatever reason I want to restart without having to enter any password. Samba seems to start and allow file shares, but does not start the printer sharing so I must manually enter "sudo restart smbd" to allow the printer sharing. From reading the various threads I guess that the samba "start command" is before the printers are "initialized" and thus are not "setup". So how can I make the samba "startup" last after everything else? I am not enough familiar with all of the commands to understand the thread posting to make it work.

Code:
root@srv:/etc# ls -ld rc.*/*lx* init.d/*lx*
ls: cannot access rc.*/*lx*: No such file or directory

how to disable startup applications in GNOME 2.30.2 running on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (64-bit). When I open Startup Applications (System --> Preferences -->) and uncheck a startup program, close Startup Applications and open it again, the program I unchecked is checked again. Even if I remove a program from the list it's there again the next time I open Startup Applications and the program opens when I restart.

I recently made the switch from gnome to kde. After struggling for two straight days I finally have everything the way I want, and I must say that I am quite pleased with Kde. The one thing I want to do now is get my computer to start up without running printer applets and bluetooth and all that other stuff I don't need. I have had little luck finding any info on this one.

I'm having a little problem because I've installed xampp, but can't start it because it seems there's already an apache installation in my ubuntu
I've confirmed this by browsing to http://127.0.0.1 , and by doing px ax | grep apache
[URL]
Now I'd like to know how to stop this apache, remove from startup, and uninstall safely so I use xampp's apache instead.

I have been using Sabayon 5 64-bit edition , Everything has been going great . Last month I accidentally clicked on "automatically remember running application on logging out" option in startups applications preference box -> options tab.
After which some 5 applications incl. firefox and someothers running then start everytime i boot the computer.
Its annoyance increases day by day as it makes startup slow.
I could not find a file in which this information(Apps to startup) is written.I checked /etc/runlevels/default after some googling , but cant find anything interesting there , at last gave up

I've a custom startup script myscript.sh placed inside /etc/init.d/ directory with below lines to disable usb bluetooth device "hci0". This happens on Ubuntu Lucid.
Code:
#!/bin/bash
echo "Disabling hci0 bluetooth usb dongle"
/usr/sbin/hciconfig hci0 down &
Here is the /var/log/daemon.log
When I rebooted it worked fine disabling the bluetooth dongle. But, later on, it gets enabled! I've lost it!
Code:
May 15 00:20:02 linbox bluetoothd[1539]: probe failed with driver input-headset for device /org/bluez/1537/hci0/dev_00_1F_DE_FE_7C_34

I've looked quite a bit, but didn't find an answer.
I have a Thinkpad x61s which comes with a "Sierra Wireless Mini Card module".
When I start up my computer, I get prompted for a PUK / PIN.
"Unlocking SIM PUK required" (sorry, this is a direct translation of the French, might not be the exact same words in English)
With three fields to fill:
Code PUK
New PIN Code
Reenter new PIN Code.
I don't have a card in my computer, and broadband mobile is not activated in networkmanager.
Does anyone have an idea how I can disable this prompt (I don't intend to put in a SIM card before some time).

I've been using Debian since the early days of Lenny being testing as OS on the same Computer. Its a Acer Aspire Notebook with switches for wireless and bluetooth. While booting Lenny my wireless and bluetooth stayed off as long as I didn't switch them on. But since squeeze they get activated ( you can see it by looking at the LED's ) the moment after the grub screen. I now do have to turn bluetooth and wireless off by hand everytime which is quite annoying since I mostly use eth0.
how to disable bluetooth and wireless per default in a way I can simply turn them back on by using the switch?

a friend of mine who is currently living in a different country has just installed ubuntu on her computer and I am having a very frustrating time finding coherent/useful information about how to set up a remote desktop connection with her over the internet with. Right now I'm trying to set up a remote server on MY computer so that I know the process and can tell her what to do. Particularly annoying is the erratic behaviour of Ubuntu's default remote desktop function. The results are erratic, sometimes instructing me to connect to localhost, other times to my IP address, and usually informing me that I can only connect to this computer over the local network. At one point this summer i actually succeeded in getting a friend to connect over the internet to it, but that has not happened again. Why is it doing this?
I get the impression that VNC is the best method for connecting remote desktops, but I haven't had any luck with that either. I assume I must be doing something wrong setting the servers up: i just run vncpasswd to set the password and then vncserver. What else do I need to do? I couldn't find any simple or clear tutorials. Some places seemed to suggest I would have to configure the router if I have one (which I do), but I didn't have to do that in the summer. Although, it was a different router then.Do you need more information on anything? I can't think of anything right now, I'm very tired. If you can point me to any helpful tutorials then that would be great. I have a decent amount of experience with the command line in general, but I'm not very knowledgeable about networks.

I just found Dayon wich is an opensource desktop sharing tool using java that do not need Nat configuration on client. [URL]
Does someone already test it or use it?
It try to get it working on ubuntu. I followed instructions on chmod scripts and configure java path, but I am unable to get it launch.
When I execute dayon.sh script into console, I just get instructions about java syntax. With verbose it just say java is loading correctly, but not launch and show syntax instructions.
I think it is an excellant alternative to all VNC like that need NAT config.

I got a problem with a Dell Latitude E5500. I can not disable the hardware beep after the gdm3 login screen has been loaded. All alsa beeps and system sounds are disabled and/or muted. I also tried setterm -blength 0, xset -b in startup scripts. They disable terminal-beeps, but not the halt or the gdm login beep. I tried wasting around with the gconftool, but nothing happened. It is an annoying sound. If you use, init 0 to shut down, no beep comes up.
