I just successfully installed ubuntu 10.10 Meerkat Maverik parallel to manufacturer installed Windows 7 Professional on a newly bought ThinkPad t410. All works find just that on the boot screen instead of 1 Windows partition (usually something like "Windows 7 loader on sda1") I find two Windows partitions. Now, I know that Thinkpads have a recovery partition. Funny is though that both "Windows 7 loader on sda1/2" login to what seems the identical Windows (not one of them the "normal" and the other some form of a recovery).
View 1 Replies View RelatedAbout 3-4 years ago I installed a new harddrive in my computer (XP Pro) and moved the old system disk drive to be secondary. I installed Grub and partitioned it in half. I installed Fedora on one partition and installed XP on the other. Now I want to keep the XP and replace the Fedora with another Linux like Ubuntu or Mint to try them out. I am not sure what I need to do to replace the Fedora and keep XP. Could someone give some idea how this would be done? I don't remember exactly how I did it at the time or what tools I had used or what I will need.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 500 G, where 80 are used for FC13. I added a new 80 G partiton, using Disk Utiliy, called it Backup, and I can access it when I am logged as root, When I log with any other user, even with all privileges (added almost in all groups), I get a dialog box requesting authentication.
I enter my user password, file manage just disappears as soon as dialog box disappears and I think it is a permission issue again.
In disk utility opposite to Device there is "dev/sdb", in mount point there is media/backup.
I opened fstab, I can not see an entry, here is the fstab :

So what is the route to follow to follow to allow my user to access normally read and write to it without anu persmission issues
/etc/sysconfig/bootloader contains this line:

Which works fine - except that I am going to clone this machine
and this will fail on all the other disks, which have a different serial number. It needs to be
resume=/dev/sda5
Similarly, /boot/grub/menu.lst has for root=
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD10EARS-00Y5B1_WD-WCAV55372533-part6
which will need to be /dev/sda6.
The part5 piece of this cannot be changed in yast. I selected that line, edited to /dev/sda5, and it came back the same way.
The part6 seems to be coming from /etc/fstab, changed it by hand to /dev/sda6, but it may not stay that way the next time yast runs. Similar changes to menu.lst did not survive a reboot, defaulting back to the "part5" syntax.
Is there some way to employ "/dev/sdX' syntax using yast, or is this one of those cases where one must work around the "help" of the easy configuration tool?

Is there a program that will reread the partition table and update the kernel even if one of the unmodified partitions is mounted? I installed my system on one partition, then I added another with free space. Now I want to format the second partition, but the kernel doesn't know about it yet. I tried sfdisk -R /dev/sda, but it refuses while the root partition is mounted. Is there anyway I can avoid rebooting?

- first drive is the system
- I mounted the 2nd drive (ext3) on a folder, but the Size is 941.89 MB instead of 149Go
- same for drive 3 monted on another folder, but the Size is 941.89 MB instead of 149Go

what to do next? *UPDATE: I think my HD is bad, I went ahead with the full install and get; Error: Input/output error during read on/dev/sda. The reason I started this was problems with HD and Vista OS, but after running Ubuntu live CD and being able to see the HD contents which showed Main partition with a boot exclamation and the recovery partition I thought it might be OK still.
I had a Centos install that corrupted the boot and would only boot to GRUB. After about a week of trying linux rescue and various measures I gave up and installed a fresh copy of Centos on /dev/hda which is a 40 GB drive. All my data was on /dev/sda which I did not overwrite and is a 1TB SATA drive. I added sda to the LVM of hda now and is recognized as part of Partition 2 - using the GUI Logical Volume Management. My problem is I can't seem to figure out how to retreive my data from the sda2 drive. This is what I've tried. code...
View 9 Replies View RelatedCurrently have a dual boot HTPC running windows 7 & ubuntu 9.10 , windows pulled "no longer a valid"on me after an update an i was left with a limited machine. I figure now is as good time as any to go full with a fully linux system. However, i am having some problems.
1) Windows 7 needs purged from my system.. like a cancer. I need to get rid of my sda1 windows partition. I gathered i will need gparted and grub2.. But will i need a Gpart liveCD? I need someone to take my though it.
I got and ran Gparted. My system seems to have 3 partitions with 2 unallocated spaces.
2) I will need to remount the windows partition after i reformate it and get rid of windows. I will likely need help with this as well. believe it is also worth noting that i believe wubi was used to put Ubuntu on this machine.
When I powered-up my computer today I received the message that the home partition listed in /etc/fstab cannot be mounted and to press ESC to go to the recovery shell.
My computer is dual-boot, with Windows on the first hard disk (sda) and Ubuntu 9.10 on the second hard disk (sdb); I am using Grub version 1.97 beta4. The home partition is thus on sdb2 and the file system is ext4.
The /etc/fstab file contains all the partitions and has not changed since last October. Also, when issuing the command fdisk l, all partitions are correctly displayed, including the home that cannot be mounted.
Finally, the command fsck /dev/sdb2 quickly returns the result that /dev/sdb2 is clean!
I am trying to actually wipe my entire hard drive and figured it may just be easiest to format the hard drive and deleting the partitions. So when I go to System => Administration => Disk Utility => Select the Hard Drive => Click Delete Partition => And I get the error shown in my screenshots. What would be my best way to delete this partition and remove ubuntu completely for the time being. And yes I am using the latest RC. 10.04. However I don't suspect this is a bug.

This incident happened after I try to encrypt this partition and then an error message appears. If not mistaken, it contains an error number (I forget) and a warning which reads that can not remove the LABEL on the devices.
I am trying to save a document in a mounted partition but its says I don't have the permissions to save the file. It says this for any partition. I am only able to save it in my home directory. How to I solve this. Basically I am trying to access a file in linux in windows xp. So I need to save the file in fat 32 partition which it is not allowing me to do.

I installed jessie on a laptop with one SSD. I used guided partitioning and selected the whole drive with multiple partitions. The /home now takes up 420 GB. I would like to reduce that to 20 GB to make room for another partition.

recently i did a fresh install of 11.3 on an ext4 partition. I had my hard disk partitioned as below:-

52 GB Multimedia /MM ntfs
52 GB Backup /ABackup ntfs
52 GB Extras /Extras ext4
27 GB root / ext4
60 GB home /home ext4
The problem is that I cannot access the /MM and contents. I tried Properties > Permissions and changed applied the changes to subfolders and contents too. Now I can access /MM but not the contents. All are marked with a lock logo.There are numerous folders/files.Changing the permissions individually is a hectic work.possible to do it in a command line/script?
I'm totally new with linux and Ubuntu. I've just installed 10.10 yesterday and since then it's been an uphill struggle These forums has helped me out quite a bit already so I hope you can continue doing it with this problem I have.I got a single drive where the bootpartition is ext4 and the other "storage" partition is a remenant from a windows 7 installation I had, with NTFS. Decided I wanted to give Ubuntu a try! Now i've run into permission trouble though, mainly because I wanted to set up an FTP server (oh what a struggle THAT's been, I have some stories... ). I've done a "mount --bind" so that I can reach different resources directly from my chroot. It turns out though that the mounted partition isn't giving anyone except the owner (me) permission to see the resources. FTPing into the server gives the mount points but gives a 550 error and can't list anything inside of them.It works perfectly for me just running it at the prompt or using the mount points directly in the Ubuntu GUI though (since I'm the owner/admin/whatever).
My intended solution that I've found was that people with NTFS drives did a few magic tricks with the line of text in Fstab so they could access their NTFS drives. Problem for me is that my sda3 mount isn't showing up at all in fstab, even though fstab is supposed to (as far as I know) show all mounted devices on there. All the while, I have my sda3 totally accessible from /media/Storage/. Any pointers as to why this is?After I installed Ubuntu, I just mounted the sda3 with the Disk Utility from System->Administation and didn't think much of it afterwards until now.What's the best course of action here? remount the ntfs partiton using fstab? Convert the ntfs partition into an ext4? I have a lot of data on there I want to keep as well.
I have a DHCP/PXE server behind a firewall. It mounts partitions on the file server on the corp. network on the other side of the firewall. Every box that PXEs also mounts partitions on the main file server.
I was hoping I could change them to mount from the DHCP/PXE server, so that server could cache and cut down on the requests through the firewall, as well as the sessions that the firewall must track.But it seams a little strange to try to export directories that are simply NFS mounts on another server already.
Every time I mount one partition manually as read write it works fine for a couple of minutes before reverting to read only. It still appears as read-write when I list the mounted directories but won't let me write to it. I have tried unmounting and remounting it, but after a few minutes it always ends up as read-only again.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been working at creating a highly available set of host servers for a linux diskless boot cluster.Each host machine is fitted with redundant power supplies and two 1TB drives in a Raid-1 configuration.When I first started this project they each had twin 160GB drives. In my original setup I had both nodes acting as primary systems so that I could mount /dev/drbd0 to my /data directory and see changes immediately.It had worked in the past where I could make a file in /data on the first machine and it would show up in the /data directory on the second machine. One day this had stopped working where if I made a file on the first machine it would display on the second one until I unmounted /data and remounted it to the /dev/drbd0 disk.
This is when I bought the new disks and decided to start from scratch. The weird thing is that if I make a file on the primary and remount on the secondary to see it and then delete it from the secondary and THEN delete it on the primary, the primary throws no error however it goes into read-only mode because it knows that file was already gone.Below is my configuration file, sda8 is an 820GB partition which is used for all of the data I want to replicate, currently populated with ~10GB of data. Sda7 is my metadisk partition which is 500MB large clearly more than needed by drbd.Also you will notice "incon-degr-cmd "halt -f";" is commented out. This is because when I go to actually use it drbd throws an error when reloading the configuration and I'm not sure why that is either

I have a symbolic link to that mounted partition, and when I click on it, I can see the first level of folders, but I can't execute them (even though they seem to be set to 777) and I can't open anything...
