Security :: Gdm/kdm Not Adhering To Login.defs?

Apr 7, 2010

I have to change the CHARACTER_CLASS in login.defs so that user accounts accept a number at the start. This is all fine and well with useradd, login etc. but gdm and kdm refuse to adhere to these settings. How do I change it or is there some PAM setting I have got to tinker with?

Ubuntu Servers :: Put A Few Login Restrictions In Place?

Jun 3, 2010

I've got Ubuntu server 10.04 set up and I wanted to make a few restrictions. It's pretty much just acting as a VMware server at the moment, and there are some users I've created who I only want to be able to be able to log into the VMware infrastructure web interface. I want to make sure these users can't log in via SSH, FTP, or the console itself. I understand how to block them from logging in via SSH by using DenyUsers, and I added these users to the /etc/ftpusers file to lock them out of FTP, but how can I block them from logging in at the console itself?

I tried locking the user out by editing the /etc/passwd file, but the problem is that by doing this, it also prevents the user from being able to log into the VMware web interface.

The user's entry in /etc/passwd looks like this: bsmith:*:1005:1005:Bob Smith,,,:/home/bsmith:/bin/bash

Security :: Shell Login Tripwire - Optimal Place?

Jul 11, 2010

I have disabled root login in my remote shell and I have a pretty strong password. I am not happy though. I want to increase security. I've been thinking about installing some basic tripwire rig, like say, send myself an email every time I (or anyone) log in. My questions:

- What kind of data would be useful to be sent in that email? Anything else besides "user so-and-so logged in at {date and time}"?

- How would I achieve that? Is it enough to include it in .tcshrc (because my shell is tcsh)? Should I add it to other shells as well (.bashrc, .csh etc.) even though nobody uses the other shells? Is it better placed in some other file, like .login? What is the optimal place?

- Would that be enough? Can I make that whole idea more secure in any way?

Fedora :: Appropriate Place To Install Sun Java JDK?

I need to install Sun Java JDK on Fedora. which directory should I install?

/usr/src
/usr/lib
/usr/share

or
/usr/local/src
/usr/local/lib
/usr/local/share

or other places would be better?

Another question is:

Fedora comes with a Java compiler. What's the difference this one with the Sun JDK? Do I really need to install Sun JDK?

Fedora :: Can't Seem To Point Talika To The Place Where Libwnck?

Apr 5, 2010

I decided to try and spruce up Gnome and found an applet called talika. Now to install this I have to install libwnck first. I used yum but can not seem to point talika to the place where libwnck is which is troubling. So a couple of questions. Is there an easier or better source to find customizations to add to the gnome desktop or is gnomelook the best option and how do I point talika to search for libwnck in the spot where yum put it? I have googled talika F12, searched the forums, and have not been able to locate anything.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Grey Box In Place Of Flash Playback (with Temp Fix)?

Oct 13, 2009

When I play a flash video in x86_64 with the latest 64bit flashplayer I will often get a grey rectangle after a few secs rather than playback. This is 100% reproducible if I restart firefox after playing a flash video and try to replay it.If I start firefox from a terminal I can see "invoke_NPP_Destroy: assertion failed:" type errors. Logging off and logging back on fixes, so I investigated which process needs to be restarted. Turns out to be gvfsd, so if you get a grey box do this in a terminal (as a normal user NOT as root)

Code:

killall gvfsd
/usr/libexec/gvfsd &

then refresh the page and all should be fine. (In fact the problem does not recur for an entire session until I login again) If others could report whether this fixes the same problem I can submit a bug report.

EDIT: I am using libflashplayer-10.0.32.18.linux-x86_64.so from here

Installation :: Uninstall Fedora From A Partition And Install Ubuntu In It's Place?

Jun 3, 2011

About 3-4 years ago I installed a new harddrive in my computer (XP Pro) and moved the old system disk drive to be secondary. I installed Grub and partitioned it in half. I installed Fedora on one partition and installed XP on the other. Now I want to keep the XP and replace the Fedora with another Linux like Ubuntu or Mint to try them out. I am not sure what I need to do to replace the Fedora and keep XP. Could someone give some idea how this would be done? I don't remember exactly how I did it at the time or what tools I had used or what I will need.

Fedora Security :: Get The SELINUX Authors To Consider Re-labeling Files When They Are Moved From One Place To Another?

Feb 17, 2010

I have a Fedora 12 box with a fresh install. I use ktorrent to download something, eg a series, into my home folder. Now, as root, I move (not copy) the folder with the downloaded files to /var/www/html/bob so that when someone opens http://myserver/bob/ they see the list of folders and files I have placed there. I also chmod the whole folder to 755 and chown to root.root. The folder I have just moved there is not displayed. So to work around it (before I realised it was SELINUX) I created a new folder. Now the folder is visible. Good. So now I move the files into the new folder and delete the old one. The files are displayed ... good. But wait, there's more: you cannot access (download) the files, even though they are visible.

1. How do I VIEW what context is assigned to these files?

2. How do I correct the context so that http server can allow people to access them?

3. How do we get the SELINUX authors to consider re-labeling files when they are moved from one place to another so as not to cause this fault?

Fedora :: Create A 'clickable' Script In 15 And Then Place The Result In The Favourites Panel?

Jun 16, 2011

I just upgraded to Fedora 15 from Fedora 14.... I think I could tolerate the new gnome shell if I could turn some of my tcl/tk and python gui scripts into things that I can store in the 'favorites' panel. In F14 I could create 'applets' ( with an Icon) that I could put in the top panel ( menu bar). Clicking on the icon would start the (gui based) script. Is there some way I can create a 'clickable' script in F15 and then place the result in the Favourites panel?

Fedora :: Can't Login Into The Root Account: It Returns Me Immediately To The Login Prompt?

Jan 27, 2010

I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared). Why is this happening? Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).

Fedora :: FC9: Forgot - Partition Doesn't Work - Can't Login At The LUKS Login After Grub Starts

Feb 15, 2010

My computer was working this morning and both hard drives were working fine, then all of a sudden for about two hours I was stuck with this "problem", then after fumbling and moving and stablizing things, then Windows works? See below for details. I've finally reinstalled both hard drives, but the one with the Linux partition doesn't work: it says nothing is discovered on the disk. I can't login at the LUKS login after grub starts, therefore I can't get into Linux, but Windows works?! I used to be able to go directly into Grub when the computer starts, I forgot how to do that but it doesn't matter. If you need details I'd be glad to provide them. I just wondered why Linux doesn't work, but Windows does. I have Linux & Windows on two different separate hard drives

Fedora Installation :: F13 To F14 No Shell At Login / After Upgrading Cant Login On User?

Jun 3, 2011

yesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.

At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console
username: Name
password:
last used: [date]
login: no shell permission denied

i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)

I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.

I cound't figure it out why. Then I logged out and tried to login. Another more serious problem occurred. after I type in login id and pass, it shows login seems to be right, but it doesn't login normally, but immediately bring me back to the login dialog box, and ask me to type log info again. I tried many times, it just constantly brought me back to the login page.
