I am new to ubuntu (from today) so I know nothing above, so I install it, and trying to load it, I have a problem if I try to start my session "ubuntu"or "ubuntu classic" I fall on the wallpaper, with a pointer loading, but loading is "eternal", the only way I have to use it is run "ubuntu classic (void)" or "ubuntu (secure mode)".

View 9 Replies View RelatedSince I've upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10 my computer has started acting strange. First of all, it keeps forgetting my wallpaper. Most of the time, not all of the time. Another problem is that the power-button in the upper right corner does not appear at every boot. It seems to be forgetting other settings as well from time to time.
What I belive might be causing this problem is that I mount my home directory from a server, and a wild guess is that it is somehow a random order of the startup sequence, so that some features are loaded before the mounting is complete.
I have been doing some research on problems I have been having and I have narrows Compiz down to being the problem. I am running the prop Nvidea driver. I can use Unity 2d fine however I cannot use Unity at all I just get a blank screen with the mouse cursor no desktop ever loads. I have tried switching between gdm and kdm. I have now worked out that compiz looks like the problem. If I issue a compiz --replace at the terminal I get the same sort of problem I get when I log into the Unity 3d. I loose my left hand monitor (it goes black but I can move my mouse around) and on my right hand monitor I can operate things using the keyboard but when you click with the mouse it does not work although you can move it around fine. Never used Compiz and I dont know if anyone knows any troubleshooting I can try I have exhausted what I could find on the Internet (A few exports of global variables but none fixed anything).

View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some reason my disc I burned for ubuntu desktop 10.10 freezes when I get to the ubuntu logo with the 5 dots. I am able to install ubuntu server just fine.
I tried to install desktop on top of server using sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop and then whenever I reboot it freezes during startup.
I think it might be my swap partition. I recall seeing a blip of an error talking about "press C to skip or M to start maintenence" or something like that. It never stayed on the screen long enough for me to read it.
Just upgraded from FC10 using the DVD using upgrade option. I got all the way through the upgrade with no problems. However, upon reboot, when I get to my login screen, I sign in with my username and password but I get an error about kstartup manager. I think the gist of the message was it is missing and I think the error # was 127 (I think). KDE will not start. I also tried XFCE, but it will not start also.
What should I do?

On Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, 64-bit, 2.6.32-22-generic kernel When I log into the system, the speaker icon in the upper bar is black (just an outline) suggesting there is no sound output available. After further inspection I found that the snd-hda-intel kernel module isn't getting loaded.
I have to load the module myself (using 'modprobe snd-hda-intel') every time I turn on the computer.
I'm having this problem since some time ago, in which the wallpaper won't load at startup. I have to manually go to the Appearance Manager and load it.
Isn't there a way to do this automatically at startup? I know it's kind of a minor thing, but I'm all for aesthetics of my pc.
Ist install 11.04, everything excellent-dual boot. usb kb & mouse. everything fine until install ATI upgrade. reboot then cannot use kb/m - so cannot edit or go past login?

I want the mouse pointer goes to left side of screen when it reaches right side of desktop and vice versa. Or goes to bottom of the desktop area when it reaches top of screen. It makes using mouse and moving around the desktop area using a touchpad easier.

I removed .recently-used.xbel to avoid recently opened files to be logged, so this explains part of these errors. I had disabled gnome-screensaver but now I would need it to automate screen lock and looks like dbus may be the problem. My .dbus directory is empty.
I have this problem across all my computers running Ubuntu (Lucid and Maverick installations). It works sometimes but it's hit and miss. Sometimes it will load up an iso no problem and i have a start up flash stick in no length of time. Other time's it will not load up an iso. I have tried formatting my flash drive these times but it doesn't make a difference as the drive is always recognised by the program yet i sometimes can't load an iso. When this happens i find that i generally have the same problem at the same time on my other Ubuntu installations. I find it weird. Anyway it's very frustrating when i come across another distro that i really want to try out and i cannot load the iso in the program.

Not Fedora-specific, but I couldn't think of any other place to ask. So.
Is there a way to make the desktop "continuous" so that my mouse pointer would reappear on the other side of the desktop if I move it over the edge? I sometimes find it a little frustrating to have to go from one edge to the other on a multi-monitor setup, and there are a few other reasons why I would rather have it like that.
I've got a very weird behaviour with my brand-new Slackware64 13.37 KDE 4.5.5 system. I've so far just installed some basic software from sbopkg and the fglrx-driver.
Whenever I pass the red line as seen in the attached snapshot from within the marked area, my mouse pointer gets stuck at the line for roughly one second and then moves on.
Approaching from the outside this does not happen and if I'm staying inside the area, it moves normally as it does at the rest of my desktop.
Turning on/off compositing does not change this, as well as removing the widgets from the panel or locking them. I always get stuck there.
I found out that it has to do with the setting of my external screen via D-Sub. If I switch back to my laptop screen as main, the problem disappears.
After the upgrades have installed on my installation of Ubuntu 10.4 (there were some kernel upgrades, I don't remember if there was any libc update there) it asked me to do a reboot. So I did and I got that error when Ubuntu was starting:

I am using ubuntu 10.04 and made some changes in Xorg.conf to try enabling twinview. Unfortunately, Ubuntu just stops at the startup logo now. Is there a way I can stop the loading of X, so I can undo the error in Xorg.conf and hopefully make Ubuntu load normally again? Grub automatically loads Ubuntu, there is no Grub menu that allows loading of some alternative config.

Whats strange is when I click edit/preferences/music and then browse to select my library location (which is already correct), apon selecting the hard drive that my library is on the whole music library suddenly loads and I don't have to re-select my library folder, I just cancel the preferences window. I have updated from 10.2 to 11.1. When 11.1 starts I get into the CLI rather than an automatic startup of KDE. I can login at the CLI, then type "startx" to start KDE. I know there is someway to automatically start KDE when the computer boots, but just can't seem to find it. Can someone point me in the right direction? With 10.2 I was able to automatically load KDE as myself as user and would like to have that again in 11.1.

Ive recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a 2.0 GHz Gateway computer (circa 2004) and have been having issuses with loading the desktop.
When the desktop would load on ever boot, it would load part of GNOME, and the cursor, but thats all... The background is black, and it does not respond when you click on anything. No icons, not all of gnome loaded. What should i do?
This has happened to me twice in a row while installing kubuntu 9.10 on the same machine:I get the OS installed and it prompts me to reboot the machine. I do so. On the first reboot, the KDE login screen never loads, and I just get a blank black screen.I then do a hard reset. From there, everything appears to work. I use the machine for awhile and all is well. For whatever reason, I end up rebooting, and when I log back in to KDE, not only do I not get my custom wallpaper, but I also don't get any desktop icons, a taskbar, etc.Right-clicks don't even work. The only thing that was loaded both times was the terminal that I had left open the last time.

I have observed if I wait about 5 minutes my screen saver will kick in. My setting is for 5 minutes. Once I cancel the screen saver Iḿ back to the mouse indicator circling continuously. At that point all I am able to do is restart and try again. After restarting the computer, the ubuntu splash screen appeared as usual, and now my desktop is gone (see attached image).
I also got a gnome error message (attached) which i've never seen before, but i'm guessing it's related to my absent desktop.
How to restore my desktop?
I've just upgraded a Compaq D510 from 9.10 to 10.04.During upgrade I got a message:-Code: Missing Resources.The NetworkManager Applet could not find some required resources.It cannot continue.However it did continue, and the system seems to work OK except the mouse pointer is invisible.I can use <ctrl> to highlight where it is, and I can click on menus and run apps.If I VNC in from another machine I can see the mouse pointer on the remote screen.With at least one Theme/Icon/Pointer configuration combination I can get the pointer to appear after boot, but only by launching either Firefox or Gimp.
