I have the weather feature turned in my system tray and it shows my local weather. Let's say I setup a snowing effect on my desktop, I want it to snow when my local weather reporter shows snow sign.Is this possible? Is there a tutorial on how to do this?

have upgraded my kubuntu, after what desktop at random time from login freezes, some times completely, some times for few seconds, after what composing automatically disables.When i disable desktop effects or when it stops automatically, screen begin randomly fill with pixels... Tried to reinstall original nVidia drives, didn't helped.Also tried gnome desktop, snow begins after login.In vesa mode working fine 800x600, and I don't think that is related to video card, it should be big coincidence.
Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.
When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.
I'm wondering how you can post web content on your desktop like you can in windows. Like to have your XBL gamercard on your desktop sort of thing. But what I want it for mainly is to put the countdown to 10.10 on there.

View 2 Replies View RelatedCurrently have a dual boot HTPC running windows 7 & ubuntu 9.10 , windows pulled "no longer a valid"on me after an update an i was left with a limited machine. I figure now is as good time as any to go full with a fully linux system. However, i am having some problems.
1) Windows 7 needs purged from my system.. like a cancer. I need to get rid of my sda1 windows partition. I gathered i will need gparted and grub2.. But will i need a Gpart liveCD? I need someone to take my though it.
I got and ran Gparted. My system seems to have 3 partitions with 2 unallocated spaces.
2) I will need to remount the windows partition after i reformate it and get rid of windows. I will likely need help with this as well. believe it is also worth noting that i believe wubi was used to put Ubuntu on this machine.
i want to start my application when the user logs in.

With the current set up there is a problem with window placement upon opening new widows or context dialog boxes. I realize that I could adjust placement properties and select window placement with the mouse but this is still lacking in productivity. My monitors are not next to on another so this is more of a problem than it seems.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to make a live-USB containing among others both Ubuntu desktop i386 and Ubuntu desktop AMD64. How do I go about this? I tried using unetbootin, first adding i386 and then amd64, but that failed. My computer with an athlon II did manage to boot, and showed it had booted into the 64-bit version (ram shown was 3.9 GB, i386 goes to about 2.7 I think), my wife's computer with a pentium 4 did not manage to boot, got to a black screen. I think this is because casper has issues, being overwritten (I'd seen something to that effect somewhere), and thus only the latest version added being booted (in this case amd 64).
I'm under the impression that the startup disc creator included won't help, nor won't the multicd.sh script, so how do I circumvent the issues?
he clicks on everything on his GNOME desktop, and manages to delete everything, including menus, icons, etc. The people he lives with aren't skilled enough to fix it, and I live a good eight hours away. I have remote capabilities with NX, but that requires them to initiate a connection to my workstation here, which is more painful than I thought it would be. I need a way of locking down the desktop, so it's read-only, so he can't make the changes he seems to keep making. I figure I could make the .gnome directory read-only, but I don't know if that would affect the normal operation.

I am having fedora 10 running on 64 bit machine. I want to upgrade to fedora 12 using preupgrade.
Now as per my knowledge it downloads all rpms from Internet, i not having that much huge bandwidth me, so that option is not feasible for me.
I am having fedora 12 iso file: Fedora-12-x86_64-DVD.iso
How can i configure preupgrade to use iso file rather then downloading all rpms and download only what is necessary.
I want to make local version of web site. I am using (K)Ubuntu and installed HTTrack from repositories.Even though web site screenshots show GUI version of it, all I get is web-version which effectively opens web page on my local computer. When I try to click "next" on first screen, I get Page Not Found error. It obviously tries to run some sort of scripts on local machine, but nothing is installed there, and no dependencies mentioned in repositories.Anyway, I would prefer to have GUI version that web version of the tool.Does anybody know how to install GUI version of HTTrack? Or are there any equivalents of it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.04 (fresh install) and it is my work computer/Server and i'd like access to this PC from my home. But with Remote Desktop it only says i can do local.
I've look around and opened up port 5900 in my router. Set this IP to to static and forwarded the port to this computer.
I've read that unchecking the "configure network automatically to accept connections" as it seems to cause an issue in ports i've read. Still nothing.

How can i allow access from my Windows Based PC to this computer over the internet?
I've never even set up a virtual desktop on Windows so I'm not sure where to start. I noticed that there's a menu in Ubuntu to set this up, but I followed the instructions (can't remember what they were off hand) and it said that the computer was only accessible through a LAN. I want to leave the Ubuntu machine (my laptop) at home and be able to access it through my desktop (Win7) in college (long story but I don't think that matters). It's possible to do this, right? How would it be done? I understand that LogMeIn doesn't work with Linux, so I'm guessing I have to use Ubuntu's default virtual desktop program and a Windows program like TightVNC, but I'm not sure how to make the laptop accessible from something other than a local network.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) on a Dell Precision 670 desktop that I share with another user. The OS is installed on a 160GB disk, which also has the /home folders. There is also a second internal disk (1TB) which has shared files (music, pictures, etc).
How can I configure Ubuntu such that either person can read or write to this shared disk? Right now, if someone is logged into the PC, the disk can be mounted, but then it is not available to the other person.
Is this possible to make groups members of a group (the same way aliases work for the mailing system). If not is there a painless way to make all my nis users members of more than one local groups? Maybe set this on the nis side and not per machine setup?

Although, when I want to get to the page from the internet, I don't know right ip address, since router's one should be local, and also, router has it's own web page running at port 80. So I guessed that my server IP would be modem's one, which I don't know. Sometime in past, I figured out address of modem too, but it has it's own application running. Also, router supports port forwarding (which I guess, is needed), but I don't know how to get using to it. what address from internet should I have? How should I determine it?

It is not listed in my fstab file and I mount it manually in nautilus (having to type a password). It is designated as /dev/sdb1 and /media/repo when it is mounted. Can I get cron to mount it and then add the password or do I have to add it to fstab?
I have successfully installed fedora 10 and have rpmfusion in my /home/ directory. i don't know how to edit yum.conf to make yum install from this local repo. i tried once. But when i tried to install vlc i got an error saying some lib****** files are missing and missing dependencies.
