I' have FC10,firefox3.0.4it take ages to load any page.the d/l speed is good .but while loading pages it takes a lot of time!while on XP everything works fine even though the the firefox version being an earlier one than FC10
View 4 RepliesI've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox,opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.
I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network

I am using KVM and created four guest Operating systems on it. The server host is Ubuntu 10.04.I am using 4 websites in a reverse proxy environment. One of our website is running on CentOS VM. Right now there is no traffic on the website static HTML pages. I do not have any clue as why it was taking longer time to be accessed.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.
I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.
A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.
I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.
is there a way to make the cpu fan turn faster at certain speed when the cpu temp. reaches lets say 65 or 70c automatically thru a script or config file ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSome days ago I switched from Ubuntu to Fedora and it is just great, Gnome 3 looks awesome. I waited for the installation of Fedora until I got my new OCZ Vertex 2 SSD and the first benchmarks were astonishing. The SSD has an average Read/Write speed of ca. 270Mb/s. Well, now I installed Fedora 15 and I was expecting a boot time of less than 20 seconds, but in fact it takes 30 seconds. By way of comparison, Ubuntu takes on my old HDD about 27 seconds, so a bit less than it takes on the SSD.
Then I tested some software, I started Eclipse and compared the start time on Ubuntu (HDD) and on Fedora (SDD). Starting Eclipse from the HDD took about 6 seconds while starting from the SSD took about 7 seconds. The differences in the results are not big, but taking into account that the SSD is at least twice as fast as the HDD the results are really strange. Now I would like to ask you how I may increase the performance of Fedora on my SSD?

The same network environment, no matter which browser I use, my fedora 13 always works slower than windows XP on loading web pages. Others are better than windows -- like memory management...(I directly feel that). applications running more smoothly than those in windows xp.
I want to know how could I make it faster on loading web pages.
Note: my network environment can not be changed!
I recently bought my laptop (Fujitsu nh540) and installed FC14 on it. I have Integrated WLAN Atheros HB97 (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) (more info here about the config) running on: 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686.PAE
Since I installed FC I've had problems with the internet. In any browser pages load very slow, it looks like the browser waits some seconds, sometimes even 1-2 minutes until it actually starts to load the page.
Second thing I saw is that when it boots I keep getting:
Determining IP information for eth0... failed; no link present. Check cable? [FAILED]
But I have WiFi internet. I am not using a wired internet connection.
I installed madwifi driver (compiled it, after reading some info on google and it seems it should be good for my network) and it seems it's a bit better, but I still have to wait some seconds until it starts loading pages. I tried different browsers, it makes no difference. On my other 2 laptops I have no problems, the internet works fine, same goes for my android mobile phone. Another "nice" problem I noticed is that when compiz is enabled I see incoming video on skype black and the same black screen for some movies with some programs. After disablig compiz, all works for video.
I recently installed 11.2 and Firefox takes several seconds to connect to each site.I pinged my machine, the gateway, the DNS servers (by IP address), and other various sites (by domain name), all without delay. But when I browse using Firefox, there's a 3-second delay while "looking up", and finally it connects. Any ideas what's causing this? I'm using Gnome and don't have another browser installed to test.

In XP I had an anti-virus, third-party firewall and sundry softwares against spybots, rootkits etc. The anitivirus blocked the suspicious web pages while browsing. View 9 Replies View RelatedI am currently using fedora 12. My question is why is the speed for my yum and rpm are very slow. Something like Flash Player 10 couldn't even load after being installed. If I downloaded the rpm, the speed is like normal but if I yum it. The ESA took like >1,000,000 sec..or whatever..The point is it does seem like something has happened to my yum/rpm function. I can download and surf the web as usual. I just can't get any add-on such as the Flash Player 10. I can only use the basic already provided by Fedora.

but I am still unsure what type of RPM issue I am facing.
The Fedora machine acts like print and file server.But the problem, its the conection time.When i start the machine with fedora, takes like five or more minutes to appear in "My network places" in the windows machines, and if the server dont appear, i cant print and browse in the server files with the windows machines.I can browse in the internal network files (Windows folders) from fedora all the time, i have internet conection and with the internal network all the time, but the server just dont appear in the network places in the windows machines when i just start the server.
I check the samba status when i start (in the terminal), and its running.And i have a control program called "Control of Ciber", this program connect with the "Slaves" terminals and the conection appear in the server, but when i just turn on the server, the machines appear offline, and they connect after the same time taken for the server to appear in "My network places" in windows.I dont know if have a relation, but i cant open the share folders of the fedora machine in the windows computers, a error dialog appear (Privileges problem), and i just cant see the files in the folder.I give administrator privileges to everyone in this particular shared folder (Chmod 775), and i put the "Security = share" in the samba file. This issues dont happen in debian or ubuntu with the same configuration
It takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.
However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?
I have installed Fedora10 on my PC which had an XP. Now Fedora waits just 2-3 seconds to press any key to choose between XP and Fedora. Actually if I don't press any key it automatically begins Fedora. How can I increase this time interval?

About half the traffic on my LAN is netbios broadcast. I do not want to do a WINS server because I do not want to have to manually change the registry on every machine. This is only for local name resolution and I do not have any web servers or e-mail servers. I do not have access to a Windows server to use as a DNS server. I am on Debian and using BIND but am open to other suggestions.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an old AthlonXP-2600+ running at 2.078 Ghz which I was assured would do 2.6Ghz, but actually doesn't and 2.178 Ghz is what we settled on. I have 266mhz ram on a board with 333mhz FSB and we sorted that out also, and specified the ram speed. That sounds like under 10% of a speed increase, if any. But the previous kernel I built here took 55 minutes (time make -j4). The one I built after the mods (nearly same config) took 33 minutes. (make clean; time make -j4) 40%? I've clearly improved or fixed something.

On my computer, I'm using 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 and Firefox 3.6.8. Firefox is so s...l...o...w..... It's slow loading and it's slow browsing. Konqueror takes 1, maybe 2 seconds to load, and another second to load the home page. Firefox takes a good 30 seconds to load. The only message I get when loading from a terminal is about not using a shared database. I don't hear the disk churning like it would with a fragmented disk.
I can't believe everyone is having this response, the hue and cry would be enormous! Anything to try? Should I try loading another browser? I tried Opera on 11.2 and didn't really like it, had problems with a lot of content. What about Sea Monkey (Gad, I HATE words with monkey in them!) Konqueror won't show a lot of videos and I have problems using the back and forward buttons. I'll wait for fixes but in the meantime.
I have installed Wubi (Ubuntu 10.10) recently. It takes more time to boot than Windows. But my main concern is that my browsing speed is much slower compared to that on Windows 7. How can this be resolved?

I called verizon (my subpar isp) they run a few test, say every things fine. I recheck my ping, its back to 45 but only last 5 mins after they check it, then it goes back to 80. I'm always having problems with them, but every time I call them the problems "just so happen" to go away while their helping me.
Anyway, my question is... Is there anyway for me to increase my ping/speed without upgrading my internet? I have 3.5 upload, .75 upload, and a Westell model 327w. I know this is a general question and not really linux related but I thought I would try this forum first since its always so helpful. I have googled this subject but I only find windows related stuff that pertains only to the programs running on the machine. They suggest things like "dont download when you want high ping" and "temporarily turn off seeding for your torrents" It is most important in windows for me though, I like to play games and a difference of 50 and 110 ping does make a difference. Of course, everything seems slower, like streaming movies and stuff.
