General :: Increase Mouse Cursor Speed In Ubuntu?
Jun 29, 2010
How do I increase the mouse speed in Ubuntu Linux? Running Gnome 2.30.0. I've already maxed out Pointer Speed Sensitivity in the Mouse Preferences control panel. I am not interested in increasing the Acceleration. Is there a config file I can edit to boost it past what the control panel allows?
I know that this mouse can track faster because it does in Windows.

I would like to increase the speed of my cursor movement. For example, when I press and hold the left or the right arrow when in terminal or a text editor I would like the cursor to move faster. I have tried kbdrate and xset as suggested here:

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and I have a Logitech MX518 mouse. I see that the Logitech SetPoint software is only for Windows, but I am not able to get the exact mouse behavior that I want through the Mouse settings in Ubuntu.
I want acceleration disabled, so I put the slider all the way to the left for acceleration. I then move the slider for mouse sensitivity, but I didn't notice a change in cursor speed. How can I modify my mouse to not use acceleration but adjust the speed of the cursor? Is there a special app I can install for this?

I have an old AthlonXP-2600+ running at 2.078 Ghz which I was assured would do 2.6Ghz, but actually doesn't and 2.178 Ghz is what we settled on. I have 266mhz ram on a board with 333mhz FSB and we sorted that out also, and specified the ram speed. That sounds like under 10% of a speed increase, if any. But the previous kernel I built here took 55 minutes (time make -j4). The one I built after the mods (nearly same config) took 33 minutes. (make clean; time make -j4) 40%? I've clearly improved or fixed something.
bash-4.1$ sudo grep BogoMIPS /var/log/messages |tail May 15 14:37:32 genius kernel: Calibrating delay loop (skipped), value calculated using timer frequency.. 4193.78 BogoMIPS (lpj=2096890) & later.

I've recently got a tablet pc and I've got it nicely set up with Jolicloud - an Ubuntu derivative like Mint - but I can't hide the mouse cursor in Gnome. Now, I've read so much about tips and tricks on how to hide the cursor with terminal, X and gconf tricks in my Googling, but NOTHING works!
How do I do this definitely? Edit: Unclutter is not what I want, nor is changing the root X cursor satisfactory, because it is overridden by whatever toolkit you are using.

I've got a problem with my Arch flashdisk. When I start xorg, my mouse cursor keeps moving left until it reaches the edge of the screen, where it stops. I checked the connector, etc., but it didn't help, so I guess it's software-related.What can be causing the problem?

Last week my ping was 45 this week its 80. I've checked it on three different computers, and reset my router. I called verizon (my subpar isp) they run a few test, say every things fine. I recheck my ping, its back to 45 but only last 5 mins after they check it, then it goes back to 80. I'm always having problems with them, but every time I call them the problems "just so happen" to go away while their helping me.
Anyway, my question is... Is there anyway for me to increase my ping/speed without upgrading my internet? I have 3.5 upload, .75 upload, and a Westell model 327w. I know this is a general question and not really linux related but I thought I would try this forum first since its always so helpful. I have googled this subject but I only find windows related stuff that pertains only to the programs running on the machine. They suggest things like "dont download when you want high ping" and "temporarily turn off seeding for your torrents" It is most important in windows for me though, I like to play games and a difference of 50 and 110 ping does make a difference. Of course, everything seems slower, like streaming movies and stuff.

I recently decided to install ubuntu on an old PC to increase its speed and usability. Prior to this I had windows XP running on it. I installed the newest version of ubuntu, which makes the whole thing running unbearable slow. Under windows xp it was running ok, my question therefore is: which version would you guys recommend that needs less ressources, but still has comparable functionality to the new version?

My mouse cursor has acquired some strange background image showing what looks to be paragraphs of chinese glyphs (they are too small to make out clearly). This background image is contained in rougly a 1 inch square with the mouse cursor hot spot in the upper left-hand corner. The mouse cursor is visible, but whatever is under those glyphs is covered.
I've tried the mouse configuration gui -- but it says nothing of background images for the mouse. I've also deleted and recreated my xconfig.org file to see if that somehow got mangled. I've been searching the web for a couple of hours, but cant seem to find anything related to my problem.

I have just updated Debian Squeeze and my mouse cursor is invisible. However, it still functions... I can right click and get a menu, clock on things and get the normal functions.
I have filed a bug report and found one other bug report on this but haven't found a fix or any other info.

I am curious if it is possible to use multiple hard drives to increase server speed. I know I could run stripped drives or RAID0, but was wondering if there is any other way to do it within Linux. My default 9.10 Server install has 3 partitions as a default. Would splitting these on three drives make it any faster?

Is there anyway to increase the speed of scrolling within the unity launcher? Like when you have more icons than that fit inside of your screen. I know you can just go to the scrunched up icon and hover it and it will appear, but is there a way to increase the scrolling speed when using a mouse wheel? It seems a little slow for my taste.
I think I seen a "bug report", for this, which really isn't a bug, but more a desired option to customize the unity launcher. Just wondering if this has been figured out, or even possible.
Nothing big, but just trying to tweak ubuntu a little more LOVE IT!

Redhat Ent Linux ES Release 2 (Taroon 8)

startx(1): initialize X session - Linux man page
I thought I'd look into methods of recovering from a lost password for future use, how to change the passwd and shadow should I need to. So I started an X session, vi'd my .swp files then logged off. Perhaps I changed one of these files accidentally, but my intent was just to view them which I did. After starting up my computer the next day and logging in I began an X session - "startx". The session appears to have started, but with a black screen and an active mouse cursor.

after maybe half an hour, the wireless download rate drops to about 110ks (and runs happily at up to 20x this until then). At that point, it will never pick back up above that rate unless i disconnect and reconnect. Once the problem occurs once, its like to reoccur about every 5 to 10 minutes until the machine has rebooted.

I am using a Asus UL30A laptop computer. I just performed an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. I remember running into this problem before, but I forgot how to fix it. The problem is, when I plug my laptop into the external monitor with my laptop screen turned off automatically when I first log in, I do not see the mouse cursor on the external monitor! The mouse cursor is still here, although invisible - if I do a right-click, the property menu will come up. My current workaround is simple- if I switch to the next workspace (by pressing Ctrl-Alt-right arrow), the cursor will appear from then on.

Just upgraded to 10.10, which went smoothly except for the fact that my mouse pointer is now gone. I can track where it is by ticking on the function that shows its location when you press control, but otherwise it's invisible (though technically functioning - I can still click on things and move it about).
I've attempted to change the look of the mouse under theme in the hopes that it might be one that doesn't work, but after trying all of the selections I still haven't found one that will display.

I used ubuntu 10.04 for some months and it worked just fine. Suddenly when my little sister and brother used the computer it crashed (Could be because of some upgrade). Black screen after ubuntu loading screen. So I googled for a while but lost my temper so I loaded my ubuntu cd formatted the disk and installed ubuntu over again. This time i get to login screen and after login all i see is the wallpaper and mouse cursor. I can move the cursor but I cant right-click or anything. Ubuntu works perfectly in safe mode though!
A difference a noticed from the first time I installed was that the first time: I could choose to install proprietary drivers for my graphic card and wifi network card whith "Jockey". Now i cant and I have no wifi internet connection! I dont know how the graphic card works but apparently its using some kind of default driver as i can see things how to make my ubuntu work as good as before
Graphic card: ATI Radeon X1200 (It worked before with compiz, desktop effects and everything!) Network card: Broadcom Netlink BCM5787M (Yes this is also my wifi card because of the M in the end, also worked good as ever, before) Computer: HP Compaq 6715b

I have dual monitors, and I was running Minecraft in a window on the external screen and I accidentally pressed F11, which made the game appear on both screens at once (I have dual monitors), one with the mouse and one without, when I pressed F11 again both screens flickered but nothing changed. I could move the mouse to close the window but it didn't respond, so I restarted, and now the cursor is stuck against the left side of the screen and doesn't respond to the touchpad (unfortunately I don't have a USB mouse to try out) It's a Samsung R580 laptop running Ubuntu 10.10, with an ATI HD545V graphics card. just recently installed Ubuntu for the first time and would really like to get to back to using it. Feel free to patronize me, I won't get offended.
