Ubuntu :: Cant Use Usual Ways To Increase Timeout On Grub Menu

Apr 6, 2011

I have an Alienware M11x r2 laptop running Windows 7-63 and Ubuntu 10.10 Unity installed. It was all fine and dandy until I changed my grub timeout to 1 sec (or perhaps 0, its been so long i can't remember!) to reduce the waiting time until an OS boots. My grub was set to boot to Windows 7 as default. Now when I boot up I cannot halt the boot process not matter what key I press (e.g SHIFT).I am doomed to forever boot into Windows. Its been months and I had written off my Ubuntu OS but I am tempted to try and fix this one more time.Since I cannot access the Ubuntu installation AT ALL I cant use the usual ways to increase the timeout on the grub menu (yes I have searched the forums far and wide).

Is there ANY way of changing the grub menu parameters without actually booting into Ubuntu Unity? Can I modify the timeout settings using a live cd or usb boot?

General :: Sounds Like Under 10% Of Speed Increase

May 16, 2011

I have an old AthlonXP-2600+ running at 2.078 Ghz which I was assured would do 2.6Ghz, but actually doesn't and 2.178 Ghz is what we settled on. I have 266mhz ram on a board with 333mhz FSB and we sorted that out also, and specified the ram speed. That sounds like under 10% of a speed increase, if any. But the previous kernel I built here took 55 minutes (time make -j4). The one I built after the mods (nearly same config) took 33 minutes. (make clean; time make -j4) 40%? I've clearly improved or fixed something.

bash-4.1$ sudo grep BogoMIPS /var/log/messages |tail May 15 14:37:32 genius kernel: Calibrating delay loop (skipped), value calculated using timer frequency.. 4193.78 BogoMIPS (lpj=2096890) & later.

How do I increase the mouse speed in Ubuntu Linux? Running Gnome 2.30.0. I've already maxed out Pointer Speed Sensitivity in the Mouse Preferences control panel. I am not interested in increasing the Acceleration. Is there a config file I can edit to boost it past what the control panel allows?

I know that this mouse can track faster because it does in Windows.

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Increase Ping / Speed

Feb 25, 2010

Last week my ping was 45 this week its 80. I've checked it on three different computers, and reset my router. I called verizon (my subpar isp) they run a few test, say every things fine. I recheck my ping, its back to 45 but only last 5 mins after they check it, then it goes back to 80. I'm always having problems with them, but every time I call them the problems "just so happen" to go away while their helping me.

Anyway, my question is... Is there anyway for me to increase my ping/speed without upgrading my internet? I have 3.5 upload, .75 upload, and a Westell model 327w. I know this is a general question and not really linux related but I thought I would try this forum first since its always so helpful. I have googled this subject but I only find windows related stuff that pertains only to the programs running on the machine. They suggest things like "dont download when you want high ping" and "temporarily turn off seeding for your torrents" It is most important in windows for me though, I like to play games and a difference of 50 and 110 ping does make a difference. Of course, everything seems slower, like streaming movies and stuff.

Ubuntu :: Increase Unity Launcher Scroll Speed?

May 28, 2011

Is there anyway to increase the speed of scrolling within the unity launcher? Like when you have more icons than that fit inside of your screen. I know you can just go to the scrunched up icon and hover it and it will appear, but is there a way to increase the scrolling speed when using a mouse wheel? It seems a little slow for my taste.

I think I seen a "bug report", for this, which really isn't a bug, but more a desired option to customize the unity launcher. Just wondering if this has been figured out, or even possible.

Nothing big, but just trying to tweak ubuntu a little more LOVE IT!

At that point, it will never pick back up above that rate unless i disconnect and reconnect. Once the problem occurs once, its like to reoccur about every 5 to 10 minutes until the machine has rebooted.

General :: Ways To Get In-depth Knowledge Of OS

Jun 21, 2011

I'm currently trying to find ways to get in-depth knowledge of the Linux OS. To give a brief overview of where I am at right now, I am a computational science graduate student who does all of his work on *nix scientific clusters.I also took a lot of computer engineering and computer science courses in college, as well as being the stereotypical standard computer nerd growing up, so I'm somewhat familiar with computer architecture, though more from the hardware side.So I'm familiar (though I wouldn't claim to be an expert quite yet, by any means) with using Linux and C programming, and I have a basic grasp of generic computer architecture, but what I feel I really lack knowledge in is the specific details of the Linux. All the details of the boot process, exactly what the kernel does, how Linux handles memory management, etc. I'm having difficulty finding any information on this;all I can find is generic information targeted towards people who are just starting out, and the stuff I've found that talks about the kernel seems more oriented towards "you change setting X and Y happens" rather than what the kernel is doing.

Apparently I have to write <?php and php?> to make these scripts work now.Is there a way I can edit a system file to allow me to use both instead of having to change all my files?

General :: Looking For Ways To Manually Rebuild A Partition Table?

Dec 14, 2010

I need to find a program or a way to edit the partition table and set the values and addresses for the partition boundaries manually. A while ago I had a very messy data loss that left me with a disk full of data but without a partition table (and without file indexes for some of the partitions on the disk). So, for recovery reasons I need to try lots of combinations of starting and ending addresses for each partition. Additionally it would be extra nice if I could do this with a live cd since I don't have the faulty drive attached to a working computer at the moment.

General :: Sound Volume Increase Beyond 100%?

May 29, 2010

Some audio output from files or streams is too low. It is obvious that hardware is able to play the same sounds but louder but because of the data it just plays it at some low level even at 100% volume. Vlc can generally increase the volume of a file up to 200%. Is there a way to do the same thing VLC does system-wide and if possible for an arbitrary v percentage value.

If there is no application that does this, where should i look into for libs to do it myself or what code should i modify(eg code in the alsamixer)

Note: Asked the same thing on stackoverflow and they directed me here.
