Jun 2, 2010

USB 3G Huawei E1550 modem is used for connecting to the internet.When I'm connecting to the internet modem light is blue (it means that I'm connecting using 3G network)I have issues with speed when browsing internet (using Firefox and Google Chrome) or updating software using apt-get (download speed around 1.5 - 6 kB).At the same time I can download files using Transmission with 60 - 120 kB.

Ubuntu Networking :: Fonic UMTS USB-Stick Huawei E1550 Ubuntu 10.4 LTS Install

Jul 2, 2010

A few days ago I ordered a UMTS USB-stick from Fonic and I received a Huawei model E1550. Win and Mac install files are on the stick, but nothing for Linux. I found for the USB Modeswitch "drivers" at www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitsch/ (nothing about the program source on the producers web page - strange), but the install gave me a lot of errors, and after a while, I decide to find another "approach". I think you might find this useful. This is my approach for Ubuntu 10.4 LTS. Open your terminal and type:

# sudo apt-get install udev-extras

and add a new udev rule:

# gksu gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/15-huawei-e1550.rules

In the pop-up window make the rule like this:

SUBSYSTEM=="usb",
SYSFS{idProduct}=="1446",
SYSFS{idVendor}=="12d1",
RUN+="/lib/udev/modem-modeswitch --vendor 0x12d1 --product 0x1446 --type option-zerocd"

Save and close. To setup you mobile broadband connection go to System / Preferences / Network Connections, (or type in terminal ~$ nm-connection-editor) select the Mobile Broadband Tab, Add new and follow the assistent. The only changes I made, are the country of the provider, and the provider. (In my case Germany, Fonic) If you have to type in the settings yourself for Fonic, visit [URL] If the device is plugged, it will connect after a few seconds.

General :: Turn Turtle-speed Browsing Into Penguin-speed Browsing?

I've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox,opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.

I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network

OpenSUSE Network :: Huawei E1550 USB Modem In 11.2?

Mar 17, 2010

My machine is running on a dual-boot Windows Vista/openSUSE 11.2 scenario. I have been trying to get my Huawei E1550 to work on Linux for the past few days trying numerous methods suggested in other forums from people with the same problem, but I have not produced any fruitful results.

Plugging in the USB modem results in Linux detecting it as a CD-ROM. I have installed usb_modeswitch in attempt to switch it to a modem, but Linux still fails to recognize it. Windows Device Manager and lsusb both give ProductID=1001 and VendorID=12d1 connected to USB1. I'm guessing since Windows detects the correct IDs, the Linux versions should also be correct. In any case, I ran usb_modeswitch with the Default IDs for /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf, which gave 0x1446 as the ProductID, not 0x1001. Upon running usb_modeswitch, the product ID could not be found so the program fails and quits asking if it's connected (and it is).

Just to test, I also ran wvdial which unsurprisingly did not detect the modem and could not send the init strings. All commands were done using root privileges. Also note that when after usb_modeswitch is run and upon plugging in the USB, NetworkManager pops up near the tray saying "attached" but still shows the device as a CD-ROM.

Networking :: How To Use DNS Server To Reduce Netbios Broadcast And Speed Up Browsing?

May 11, 2011

I am on a 172.16.x.x network with about 60 Windows XP home and Vista home clients in a peer-to-peer workgroup that uses DHCP to assign addresses. About half the traffic on my LAN is netbios broadcast. I do not want to do a WINS server because I do not want to have to manually change the registry on every machine. This is only for local name resolution and I do not have any web servers or e-mail servers. I do not have access to a Windows server to use as a DNS server. I am on Debian and using BIND but am open to other suggestions.

Ubuntu Networking :: Huawei Modem In 9.10

Mar 22, 2010

I moved from Debian to Ubuntu a few months ago, with everything working fine, except my 3G modem (which worked with wvdial and umtsmon in Debian).

The packaging claims that it is a Huawei E160, but lsusb says different: E220 (12d1:1003).

I've followed various instructions from these forums and the wiki, and it seems to be being recognised as a modem (I can set up an O2 prepaid (UK) connection), but it refuses to connect.

Ubuntu Networking :: Huawei EC1261 Does Not Work

May 23, 2010

I recently bought a Huawei EC1261 mobile broadband dongle from Tata Teleservices. Unfortunately,neither does the dongle does not work in Ubuntu 9.04(Jaunty Jackalope) nor in Windows XP. The dongle is rather mounted as a drive and not recognised by NetworkManager as a mobile broadband device. The drive can be accessed with Nautilus as well as terminal like any other USB pen drive and located at "/media/disk". Also, does the device work in Ubuntu 10.04(Lucid Lynx)? report if anyone has tried using the device on Lucid, as I will upgrade to Lucid if the device is supported.

Ubuntu Networking :: Huawei EC1260 Compatible With 10.04?

Jun 25, 2010

I currently use Ubuntu 9.04. I have thought of upgrading to 10.04 for a long time, but I am unable to do so as I do not know if my mobile broadband device, Huawei EC1260, works out of the box in 10.04. In the Ubuntu wiki, I found that it was not compatible with 9.10 and a bug report had been already filed. A line is mentioned in the page, which tells us:
Declined for Lucid by Jeremy Foshee
So, does this mean that the problem is fixed in 10.04? Or, if it is incompatible, then, how will I configure it so that it can work? Now, many people may be considering that I might just download the CD image and try it out. Although my company has given me the device with 5 GB of free usage, but I have to show reasons for any file downloaded more than 15 MB.

Ubuntu Networking :: USB 3G Modem: Huawei E176 Not Working?

Jan 15, 2010

This is really weird, and I would like just this question answered: I've spent like 2 hours by plugging, unplugging, rebooting, and doing everything I could, but the modem wasn't working. When I did ls /dev/ttyU* it was showing up a list of 6 usb devices.

Code:
/dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/ttyUSB1 /dev/ttyUSB2
/dev/ttyUSB3 /dev/ttyUSB4 /dev/ttyUSB5
And when I sent the command wvdialconf after looking into all the devices, it didn't recognize any modem.

The thing is, that by the time I was writing here for a solution, I disconnected the modem, and when I reconnected it I did a ls /dev/ttyU* just to copypaste the info, and Voil! there were just 2 devices, and wvdialconf worked out just fine! I would like to know what I was doing wrong, so I make sure it won't happen again.

Oh, and I forgot to say: I use Ubuntu 8.04

Ubuntu Networking :: Huawei E270 USB Modem Not Working

Apr 17, 2010

I recently received my Ubuntu 9.10 CD, Kubuntu 9.10CD and Server Edition. I was recommended to do so by a friend because my computer Running on Windows Vista Home Basic with 512MB RAM has been extremely, unbearably slow for the last month or so I got the CD's yesterday and I ran the Ubuntu CD and everything was fine, I rebooted the Computer and it started up! It was great!! Really quick and responsive and easy to use and i LOVE it's features...

My only problem is my Broadband. I live in Ireland and I have my broadband with o2, it's quick and sufficient for my needs. I have a Huawei E270 usb modem (It's wireless broadband). And it wouldn't Work. I plugged it into my pc with Ubuntu up and running and it opened the File for o2 rather than the Interface for it. When I plugged the modem in there was a green lock symbol on the top right of the screen. Is Ubuntu even compatible with the E270 modem?

Ubuntu Networking :: Huawei E 1550 Broadband Connection With 10.04?

May 16, 2010

I use a Huawei E 1550 mobile connection, which worked fine in Ubuntu 9.10.I've got it working okay in 10.04, having installed modeswitch. However, it will not automatically reconnect if it drops out. I can force a reconnection, only if I remove the dongle and then plug it in again. Although it shows in network manager, clicking on the list entry for the dongle, just produces a disconnected dialogue message. The only way to get it to reconnect is to remove the dongle and plug it in again.I know there have been a few posts about getting mobile dongles to work in 10.04, but I can't see any solutions to this little issue yet.
