Programming :: Using Bash Script To Purge Rotating Tcpdump Files?

Oct 20, 2010

writing a script that would keep the last three versions of tcpdump files.Due to the version of tcpdump I must use -C and cannot use -G. Using -C generates a new file after X MB's have been written and adds a .x after each new one. The problem is that these files are filling up the disk too quickly. The main part of the script will kill tcpdump when a certain condition is met but in the meantime I need to purge and only keep say the three last iterations of the dump file. So for example, there is dump.pcap.1, dump.pcap.2, dump.pcap.3, dump.pcap.4 and dump.pcap.5. I'd like the script to look at the datestamps and delete dump.pcap.1 and dump.pcap2 since the other three are the three newest files. comparing files based on dump.pcap.*, check the dates and only keep the three 'youngest' files?

Networking :: Rotating Capture Files Using Tcpdump?

Apr 6, 2010

I would like to set up tcpdump to rotate log file every 1 hour and retain files for the lat 14 days but I don't think any combination of -C and -W would allow me to do that (Atleast I haven't been able to figure it out), so I am trying to rotate the files every X number of MB and retain the last 20 files. This seems to be fairly simple with the '-C X -W 20' option but I am having some trouble in customizing the names of the log files. I have tried '-w capture-$(date +%Y-%M-%d-%H:%M-)' thinking that each file would start with the current date and time but all files are using the date and time when the capture was started so the only difference is the number at the end (which is done by -W). if I can customize the names of the file so that it has the date and time when the capture in started. In fact if I can do that, I dont need the numbers that '-W' appends at the end but I dont know how to get rid of them.

Ubuntu :: Delete All Associated Files When Performing A Purge?

Jul 20, 2010

I went to remove FreeNX from my Ubuntu Lucid machine so I opened the terminal and typed: "sudo aptitude purge freenx" The command worked but when I used the command "locate nx" I got a list of FreeNX associated files (as well as nxserver files). Is it possible to completely remove a program from my system? I thought "sudo aptitude purge" would do it but apparently not. My only concern is that in the future if I decide to install something related to this program it will interfere and cause problems.

General :: Logrotate Not Rotating Files With Date Extension?

Oct 25, 2010

I am trying to configure logrotate on APP/DB servers.As per my backup policy,logs will compress in daily basis and and will be moved to a Central storage device.

My tomcat generate several application logs with date extension as well as .log extension.For eg app.log,app.log.2010-10-23-14,catalina.out,catalina.2010-10-25.log etc.

Currently my tomcat logrotation /etc/logrote.d/
#cat /etc/logroate.d/tomcat/
/usr/local/tomcat/logs/*log {

[code]....

But its rotating logs only with .log extension..ie app.log.2010-10-23-14 (with date extension) is not rotating.If i put "*" instead of "*log",its rotating all files including rotated files. How can i rotate files which is having date extension.Also i dont want to keep rotated logs for more than 3 days.

Ubuntu :: Apt-get (use Aptitude Purge To Remove All Associated Files Of A Package)?

May 2, 2010

Did a fresh install of 10.04 Desktop 86_64 this weekend. One of the first issues I noticed right away was that apt was not function properly. Say for example you install the packages tor and vidalia (assume I'm running everything from root). #apt-get install tor vidalia This command will check and install necessary dependencies, for example 'privoxy'. Now if you decide that you don't want to use privoxy and instead use polipo, you would probably feel inclined to remove privoxy. Well I found that apt-get autoremove, apt-get remove, apt-get purge WILL NOT remove all the files/directories associated with the package. You'll find that after running each of these commands, there will still be directories, scripts, etc. in /etc/init, /etc, and /etc/rc*.d. The only solution I've found to completely removing a package is aptitude purge [package].

m02_+1+7_London_0000$01.cfg as
------X-Y--City---------
X=1
Y=7
City=London

[code]....

then I want to copy the files that go all the files with the same City and X and Y to the same subfolder City/MX.Y I will need some help start doing that. And I think the first would be to get part of the filenames strings into variables.

Programming :: Bash Function For Searching Files ?

Jun 15, 2011

I'm making a small script for searching and doing some operations with photos, but I'm kinda stuck on this little function:

Code:

function findallformat {
prefix=""
if [ $1 = -pre ] then

[code]....

That function should find for every file with a certain type; and you can specify a prefix using a "-pre" followed by the prefix that you want to search. The format should be "stackable", so you can use as many types that you want, without repeating the same function on the code.

Example: findallformat -pre IMG_ .JPG .CR2 #That should search files that start with "IMG_" and finishes with .JPG and .CR2. My problem it's that, when I try to use it on the script, it says "bash: syntax error near `token' unexpected `}'"

Programming :: Catch Some Outputs In Two Different Log Files In Bash?

Jan 26, 2009

I want to catch some outputs in two different log files in bash, file simple.log and all.log So far, the script is started like this:

Code:

xterm -e "(./myscript.sh | tee -a simple.log) >& all.log"

What I want is:

- In simple.log, I want all the stdout but WITHOUT errors.

- In all.log I want BOTH stdout and stderr.

So all is ok, and the output becomes:

all.log

Code:

starting copying files
mv: cannot move ... : permission denied
copying completed
simple log

Code:

starting copying files
copying completed

But, in the new xterm, I'm loosing stdout. There is no output.How can I have the files logged as they are but also have the stdout in the xterm.

Programming :: Bash - Renaming Files Won't Work

Code:
for i in "$(ls)"
do
j=$(echo "$i" | sed 's/ /_/g')
mv "$i" "$j"

done But what I get in return for each line is just one long file name with all the file names concatenated. I've tried with echo -e "$i" as well with no results. This has to be something really simple that I'm missing but I just can't see it.

Programming :: Bash Script - Make Sure All Files Have Certain Permissions

Jan 14, 2011

How can I iterate over all the files in the current directory to check for certain permissions? This is what I have:

Code: #!/bin/bash
for file in *.tar.gz
do if [ -r "$file" ]
then echo "$file is readable"
else echo "$file is NOT readable"
fi done

But this only checks that the current user has read permissions for each file. I want to check that the group "others" has read permissions for each file. How can I do this? Is there a built in function to check if a file has read permissions for the "others" group? Otherwise, I thought I might be able to use this:
Code: $ stat --format=%a file
744 And parse the output "744" and make sure the 3rd number is between 4 and 7 (since the octals 4-7 have read permissions for others).

Programming :: Can't Remove Temporary Files Using Bash Script?

Nov 9, 2010

However, the ffmpeg command generates a temporary file blahblah.mpg.tmp of about 1GB per hour of transcoded video.My issue is that I can't seem to delete these files automatically from any bash script.Now from the command line, I can cd to the directory and just rm -f *.tmp and they get deleted. However, from my script, that same command doesn't remove those files. I thought maybe the file was in use, so I put a sleep command in for like an hour before the delete happens, but it still fails. I also put rm -f /mnt/mythtv/*.tmp in a root cronjob and it still doesn't delete the files.

If I just rm *.tmp I do get a prompt about "Are you sure you want to delete this write protected file?". But the -f switch seems to work fine as a normal user from the command line and just delete them.Does anyone have an idea how to troubleshoot this problem? The particular filesystem that the tmp files get generated on is on it's own xfs partition mounted as /mnt/mythtv.

How to build a list of files under a directory that may have any permissible characters in the name, that is anything except NUL? The only possible (?) bash data structure to contain a list of such names is an array because NUL cannot be used as a list item separator so no X-separated list can safely be used; there is no "X" that might not be part of a file name.
