OpenSUSE :: Cannot Create A New Virtual Machine In Xen

Jan 5, 2010

I have been unable to create any type of Windows VM in Xen. Every time it tells me that the processor(s) in the machine do not support full virtualization. After some research, I found several articles regarding the vmx setting in /proc/cpuinfo not showing up when the xen kernel is booted versus it showing up in the default kernel. Of course, I am not seeing the vmx extension in /proc/cpuinfo after I boot to the xen kernel. In the other posts where other people are in the same situation, the only resolution is to upgrade to the 2.6.16 xen kernel. I am already past that:

linux-vxke:~ # uname -r
2.6.31.8-0.1-xen

yet I am still unable to create any form of Windows VM. I have even seen that some people are able to create a partially virtualized Windows VM, and they report that the message is only a warning. However, I am unable to get past this message. I am running a Dell Optiplex 760 with an Intel Core 2 Duo E7300, and I have the VT-x setting enabled in the BIOS. Has anyone else seen this situation or have any thoughts on why this is happening?

OpenSUSE :: 11.4 Freezes When Running KVM Virtual Machine

Apr 8, 2011

I have 3 boxes running opensuse-11.4 64 bit - Phenom-I 2.6 GHz, Intel Q9400 quad core 2.66 GHz and Intel SU7300 dual core 1.3 GHz (the last one is a laptop). When I run a KVM virtual machine and load it quite a lot all host OS freeze. Interestingly, the laptop works the longest (hours), while the fastest system with Q9400 freezes in max. 10 minutes. After a hard reboot there is nothing in /var/log/messages This bug is 100% reproducible. The guest OS is either RHEL or openSUSE. Is it a 11.4 bug or I am missing something? Have not tried the same hardware with RHEL-6.

OpenSUSE Network :: Disconnected Machine With Virtual Machines?

Aug 29, 2011

I have OpenSuse 11.3 with VirtualBox on it, and with installed Oracle DB (on host OS).. but, sometimes this computer is disconnected, without it's gateway (adsl router)... and in that case, I cannot ping from virtual OS to host OS, or another virtual OS. I tried to use 'Host only' option within VirtualBox, but it doesn't work. What should I do? It seems that virtual machines requires some kind of gateway/router, but since machine is disconnected, it's not working.. how could I fix it?

OpenSUSE :: Vmware Server Cannot Connect Virtual Machine Console?

Jan 29, 2010

Since a few weeks I cannot open a console in vmware server 2.0.2 anymore. I don't know exactly when this started because I use vmware only occasionally (I have only 1 program (an old Ashlar DrawingBoard) which does not run properly in wine). VMware server and the console have been working before without problems, but now I get the message "Cannot connect virtual machine console." and it times out. This is on Opensuse 11.1 with VMware Server on the same pc, Firefox and the guest is Windows2000.

I have tried to disable all extensions in firefox 3.6, disabled the firewall, even created a new user (on the same pc) with a clean firefox, all without any result. However when I connect from a different computer which runs Internet Explorer under windowsXP, then I can get the console without problem.

So, somewhere there is something wrong between Firefox and VMware server.

OpenSUSE :: Virtual Machine Manager Vs. Qemu-kvm Commandline ( Tap Xor Snapshot )?

Mar 28, 2011

I want to experiment with pacemaker, and for that I'd like to start kvm virtual machines with the snapshot option, so that as soon as I stop the vm, all changes are gone and I can start over. Since I couldn't figure out how to setup networking (vm - vm and vm - public) with a kvm commandline without disturbing the Network Manager, I used the Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) for this.

It works now, but I cant see how to use the snapshot option with the VMM. On the other hand, I cant see how I start the resulting vm from the commandline. When I look at the process list, I see the command with these network options:

Code:
-netdev tap,fd=21,id=hostnet0
-device virtio-net-pci,netdev=hostnet0,id=net0,mac=52:54:00:45:30:b0,bus=pci.0,addr=0x3
-netdev tap,fd=22,id=hostnet1
-device virtio-net-pci,netdev=hostnet1,id=net1,mac=52:54:00:84:5b:bc,bus=pci.0,addr=0x6

How would I go about these fd=nn things on the commandline? I guess I somehow have to start the tap devices before, but how?

Fedora :: Virtual Terminals In F15 'graphical Mode'?

Jun 5, 2011

Has anyone else here had a problem getting virtual terminals to work when booting into F15's 'graphical mode'? This is what used to be runlevel 5 in the old SysV init system, before the switch to systemd. Before F15, I could do a Ctrl-Alt-F[n] (for n=1,...6) to get virtual terminals while in runlevel 5, and this was easy to control by editing /etc/inittab.

But with systemd, /etc/inittab is no longer used, and finding where the virtual terminals get created took me a bit of time. I tracked it down to the /lib/systemd/system/prefdm.service file, which seems to stop creating virtual terminals after tty1 in order to prevent the display manager and plymouth from conflicting on that virtual terminal. I'm using the Slim display manager (installed via yum), and I only got tty1 (showing console messages), tty2 took me back to X, and there were no tty3-6 any more. I noticed from ps that there was some kind of "plymouth --wait" process running, so I killed it. After doing so, the other virtual terminals showed up. Has anyone else here experienced something similar?

It appears that /lib/systemd/system/plymouth-quit.service is not exiting properly, and this is causing the problem. This problem only occurs in graphical mode, not in console mode (what used to be runlevel 3). My first solution was to put "/bin/plymouth quit" in /erc/rc.d/rc.local, and upon rebooting that did indeed fix the problem. But eventually I just removed plymouth altogether, which also fixes the problem. It would be nice though if plymouth-quit.service just worked as it was supposed to. I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this problem.

Fedora :: Virtual Machine Manager

Jul 30, 2009

I'm having some issues with a windows virtual machine. The system is Fedora 11 and the virtual machine is Windows 2008 Server. If I start the virtual machine from the virtual machine manager, it only has a single cpu despite my setting it to eight. If I start the machine from the command line, I can get four cpus but not eight. In both cases windows seem to display the eight cpus in the device manager (or whatever program it is). It has been suggest that windows was imaged on a four core machine before being loaded on the eight core machine and that something in windows is maxing at four cores. But that doesn't explain why the virtual machine manager can only start one cpu. I just played around on my home machine with a fedora 10 live cd and it recognized the two cores on that machine and used them from the virtual machine manager without problem. Also upped it to three cpus without problem.
