OpenSUSE :: Main Functionality Of GIT Client?
Jan 12, 2011
an opensource NON-GUI git client (for linux of course) that's really light/small. I just need to it to have the main functionality of a GIT client (downloading project for read only, clone, add, commit)

I am not 100% happy with empathy like I was with Pidgin. I am, however very happy with the indicator applet that sits next to the clock. My question is, how do I go about setting this system so that instead of 'chat' loading Empathy, it recognises that as Pidgin instead?

My client is on Ubuntu Lucid 10.04, I installed ipsec-tools and racoon from the repositories. The gateway is installed on a CentOS machine. I've configured everything to get a working roadwarrior configuration with authentication_method hybrid_rsa client and server. It's working in aggressive mode, but in main mode I can't get it working. I delivered new CA and certificates several times but I'm still stuck.
It seems that it comes from my client not supporting the certificate sent by the server. The client contains a copy of the CA, whereas server has a private key and a certificate signed by the CA.

I used easystroke on ubuntu, and it worked well enough to be functional. I triend opening Xstroke in suse, but it just adds an icon down by the notification panel. right click and left click seem to turn it on and off, but i've yet to find any configuration menu of any kind. I've also found the 'input actions' section of the personal settings menu, but i'm having a hard time making heads or tails of it. Basically, what I need is pretty simple. I have a single application that I would like to add more control functionality through the mouse. I don't even necessarily need gesture control, in fact if i could just make my extra mouse buttons perform specific keyboard commands (F11, ctrl++, etc.) that would be fantastic. If I could set it to do different things on different programs.

I recently loaded Inkscape on my 11.3/kde4.6 system.I have Inkscape 0.48 loaded, had same issues with 0.47. Program functionality is fine, except for printing. When attempting output to either a laser or inkjet, the output has excessive margins and appears to be formatted for A4, not letter. The print drivers are set for US-letter.I have seen references to Inkscape using gtk-printing or gnome-printing. I do not see packages with this specific naming available via yast. The printers work fine from GIMP, OpenOffice, etc.I also have loaded Inkscape to Win32 box, open file from 11.3 box, and have similar issues, margins seem set to large offsets, but there is no place in the page setup to set margins. My solution so far has been to save to PDF, then print from Ocular, which does work, just cumbersome.

I had an older version of Suse 11.0 and did an upgrade new install to Suse 11.3 (Awosme)!.The only problem is now when I boot I no longer see my GDM login screens. This was located in /usr/bin/gdmsetup. I think this has something to do with the newer version of GDM. Is there a way to get the older GDM back with the Login window functionality?

I'm thinking of installing openSUSE-11.1 Gnome on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop because the wireless in Gnome is much more user friendly than KDE3/KDE4 in openSUSE-11.1. The idea is to give this laptop to my 84-year old mother and things need to 'just work' for her (she currently has a desktop running openSUSE-11.1 KDE3 that uses a WIRED interface to the web).
I refuse to update this laptop to openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 (nor other recent distributions) because every kernel update after the 2.6.27 kernel has broken the Intel i855GM graphics drivers for that laptop. There are many bug reports and none have fixed the problem for this Fujitsu-Siemens implementation of the i855GM graphics.
Hence I am looking at Gnome.
I booted the laptop to a Gnome openSUSE-11.1 liveCD and wireless is easy and works great. But audio is very very VERY bad. It is incredibly user unfriendly and it does NOT work well. I assume that is because pulse audio in openSUSE-11.1 was very immature.
I note these updated packages in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository:
Code:
So my question is, did the updates to pulse audio (in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository) fix the pulse audio situation? Are there ANY helpful views on this?
Currently my wife is using this laptop with KDE-4.4.4 (and openSUSE-11.1) so I can't just install Gnome and play with it without taking the laptop away from her for a while (note the hard drive is too small for a dual boot of KDE/Gnome).

I'm thinking of trying out opensuse for a while. However, I'm used to Ubuntu so I'd like to know what the major differences are between the two distros. Hopefully, that will allow me to make a better comparison. I'm not talking about differences like "this is more 'polished' than that" or " this looks cooler than that".. I want to if there are differences in the file system... the software..

Since the latest update the gnome main menu quits unexpectedly whenever I try to select any funtion e.g. shutdown. In addition the network manager does not show up and does not configure the network (wireless). This behavior is since the latest update last week. Has anybody seen this as well? How can I revert to the previous state?

Ive been running crunchbang on my system, and yesterday decided to try opensuse so i can install the novell client. I ran the live gnome cd and during installation I shrank my main partition down and created a new partition for opensuse. Installation went well other than sometimes programs close and make the part of my desktop that they occupied useless.
Question 1) I can see my crunch bang files through opensuse but i cannot find or boot into crunch bang.
question 2) Why are these programs closing and then killing my desktop? Say i have a Firefox in the top left of my desktop and it errors and closes. I go open Firefox again, anywhere that the old Firefox window was in ( not click able). My cursor will turn to the text cursor as soon as it enters the x y position. I have to restart the laptop to be able to click file or insert a web address.

I downloaded Eclipse and am trying to create a launcher for it in the main menu. I finally figured out that a .desktop file needed to be made in /usr/share/applications, but I can't get the icon to show up. For the "Icon" field in the .desktop file, tried giving an absolute path to an icon in my home folder, and I also tried putting the icon in all the folders under /usr/share/icons and just putting "eclipse" (the icon file name) as the valueI had copied this last from some of the existing .desktop files that worked, but still had no luck. Does anyone know how to do this?

Was wondering if there is a simple way to make the kickoff menu slightly larger than the panel similar to the way Windows 7 can have their (formerly-known-as) "Start" button larger?I have KDE on my laptop and am trying to make the best use of the small screen space. The Plasma Netbook Workspaces is alright, but I ended up returning to base KDE instead.

I have a Nook. When I plug it into the USB port on my system, a window pops up asking what I want to do with the new device. I can open it and access media/nook and move files into and out of the directory.
There's a button to "Safely dismount Nook" before I unplug it. I use that. Apparently, however, sometimes it doesn't respond. Now I have .hal-mtab-lock in my /media folder, along with Nook Main Memory and Nook Main Memory (1) folders. I can't delete any of them.
How do I a) delete these folders, and b) make sure it actually unmounts the device in the future?

From what I understand aptitude and apt-get are both valid package management tools and it should not matter which one you use (of course the user interface is different, but the basic functionality is the same). I found something which makes me believe there are differences: I ran aptitude install gnome-themes-more and it did nothing because the package was already installed. Then I ran apt-get install gnome-themes-more just to see the difference, and it also did not install anything, but it marked the package as manually installed.
The I ran again apt-get install gnome-themes-more and this time the package was not marked as manually install (obviously because it's already marked). This makes me believe that aptitude did not mark my package as manually installed (I would have pasted the command output as well, but I don't have it anymore). So, is the core functionality of those tools the same or not?
I used until now apt-get and wonder if I should have used aptitude. I have found some wikis which recommend the usage of aptitude but I could not find out if this reccomendation is based only on the UI improvements or are there also improvements in the core functionality. I'd like some hints from more seasoned debianers about which one to use, or whether it matters. I'm maily using command line, so user interface is not an issue,

I tried Linux Mint 8 for awhile and seem to remember that System/Administration/Disk Utility gave a lot more useful information than what is available in Ubuntu. It showed the partitions as being healthy or not and even gave the temperature of the hard drive and if the disk is failing. Is there any way to get this same functionality in my Ubuntu 9.10 configuration?

I finally upgraded my desktop from 9.10 to 10.04. I do not feel that this was a step forward; a lot of little things just don't work. For example, when shutting down with 9.10, it automatically shuts down in 60 seconds. With 10.04, it waits *forever* for a 2nd mouse click.
The USB drive - there used to be an option to un-mount it without removing it. That's gone now, and I'm guessing that I will find more of these as the days go on. And all the colors have been removed from the panel applets. Not really a functionality issue, but it is a negative to the user experience.
So my question is: How can I restore these features? Is there a configuration somewhere I can edit?

I've been holding out on the recent few versions of Ubuntu because of the recent changes, so I was just wondering if 10.10 will bring back some of those lost features.
1. Will we see a way to have a customisable login screen?
2. Will there be an option to move the close button as a standard setting?
