Debian Configuration :: Edited Xorg.conf, Now Lost Some Keyboard Functionality?

Jul 8, 2011

I tried to edit my xorg.conf to try and encourage Debian to handle my joypad better (stop recognising it as a mouse). However, it didn't work and i couldn't get back into X.So, i entered recovery mode and deleted the contents of xorg.conf, got back into X and then edited xorg.conf back to how it was.Right so far so good.Yet, now i cannot use the backlash key in keyboard shortcuts. I have a number of shortcuts set up to incorporate this key and they no longer work, neither in GNOME nor Openbox

Ubuntu :: Functionality Lost With 10.04 LTS?

May 7, 2011

I finally upgraded my desktop from 9.10 to 10.04. I do not feel that this was a step forward; a lot of little things just don't work. For example, when shutting down with 9.10, it automatically shuts down in 60 seconds. With 10.04, it waits *forever* for a 2nd mouse click.

The USB drive - there used to be an option to un-mount it without removing it. That's gone now, and I'm guessing that I will find more of these as the days go on. And all the colors have been removed from the panel applets. Not really a functionality issue, but it is a negative to the user experience.

So my question is: How can I restore these features? Is there a configuration somewhere I can edit?

Ubuntu :: Remote Doesn't Work Without Keyboard / Mouse Plugged In - Restore Its Functionality?

Oct 11, 2010

I (finally!) have Mythtv working under 10.04. I use the Haupaugge DVB-T card with its remote. Whilst setting up the kit this worked OK. When I unplugged the keyboard and mouse the system prior to installing it next to the TV appeared to have stopped responding to the remote. In fact it seems to be responding to a number of the remote keys but not the OK and Go keys which isn't enough to run Mythtv.

I don't think leaving a keyboard & mouse plugged in is going to be domestically acceptable.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to restore lirc functionality?

Ubuntu :: Bash Broken, Lost Functionality In Terminal (gnome-terminal)?

Dec 10, 2010

Linux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"

In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.

P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!

Ubuntu :: Lost Top Sound Icon & Can't Control Volume With Keyboard?

Feb 14, 2010

my issue is as my Title "Lost Top Sound Icon & Can't control volume with Keyboard" OS: Ubutnu 9.10 x64 - Karmic Koala Lost the Top Panel Sound Icon, I even go to: System > Preferences > Sound Message Pops Up: Waiting for sound system to respond

Funny thing I do get Ubuntu OS Audio sounds Now as well I lost control of my Volume with my Keyboard, pretty sure it has to do with the same Sound icon in the Top panel that is missing The only way I can control Audio is Manually using: gnome-alsamixer 0.9.7

It sucks big time, because I can't control my Audio when ever I need to mute it or upper/lower it through my keyboard fastly when needed. having to manually opening an application to be able to change/control the Audio volume is a huge hassle for me

OpenSUSE Install :: Keyboard And Mouse Lost After Update - How To Boot In To Terminal?

Oct 15, 2010

I was working on something important in 11.2 and did a "zypper up" in the terminal in the background. I wasn't paying that much attention to it, I believe it was an update to 11.3. After returning to the computer after about one hour the windows were behaving strangely and the machine wasn't very responsive. I decided to reboot. Now at login I have neither mouse nor keyboard. I have switched the keyboard to PS2 model, no difference. If someone could help me with booting to run level 3 from the grub menu perhaps I could change some settings there to make everything work. I really regret doing the update. It would be very important for me to be able to get back in to machine with spending as little time as possible on this. Could I reverse the update? This machine is very important for me and my family for their daily communication, but currently I have very little time to fix this. My quick fix was to install Kubuntu 10.10 so I could resume working, but I would really need to get back in to 11.2.

Debian :: Different Functionality In Aptitude And Apt-get?

Aug 19, 2011

From what I understand aptitude and apt-get are both valid package management tools and it should not matter which one you use (of course the user interface is different, but the basic functionality is the same). I found something which makes me believe there are differences: I ran aptitude install gnome-themes-more and it did nothing because the package was already installed. Then I ran apt-get install gnome-themes-more just to see the difference, and it also did not install anything, but it marked the package as manually installed.

The I ran again apt-get install gnome-themes-more and this time the package was not marked as manually install (obviously because it's already marked). This makes me believe that aptitude did not mark my package as manually installed (I would have pasted the command output as well, but I don't have it anymore). So, is the core functionality of those tools the same or not?

I used until now apt-get and wonder if I should have used aptitude. I have found some wikis which recommend the usage of aptitude but I could not find out if this reccomendation is based only on the UI improvements or are there also improvements in the core functionality. I'd like some hints from more seasoned debianers about which one to use, or whether it matters. I'm maily using command line, so user interface is not an issue,

Ubuntu :: Workspace Switcher Missing Important Functionality?

Mar 20, 2010

I just installed a fresh copy of 9.10. My problem is the way Workspace Switcher 2.28.0 (the default of the installation) with compiz running (I haven't tried without compiz) Old behaviour: (9.04 and 8.10) a) rolling the mouse wheel over a workspace of the workspace switcher means: move to the next or previous workspace b) click on a the representation of a window (a little square) on the the workspace switcher and then drag it to another workspace means: move window to other workspace

In 9.10 the workspace switcher does work (the number of workspace can be configured, Ctl-Alt-left & right arrow, Ctlr-Shiht-Alt-right&left arrow) but the functionality described in a and b is missing.

The router is a Netgear DG834, which has a built in VPN functionality. So, is it enough if I set it up? Do I need to install any VPN server in Ubuntu? What if I want to access to another computer in the LAN? Where should I start?

I've also found the 'input actions' section of the personal settings menu, but i'm having a hard time making heads or tails of it. Basically, what I need is pretty simple. I have a single application that I would like to add more control functionality through the mouse. I don't even necessarily need gesture control, in fact if i could just make my extra mouse buttons perform specific keyboard commands (F11, ctrl++, etc.) that would be fantastic. If I could set it to do different things on different programs.
