View 1 RepliesThe icons for the main menu are not appearing and the option that allowed them to be displayed under the main menu window is not there anymore. How do I get my icons back, it is looking quite bare and boring without them.
Using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
I'm trying to configure Ubuntu 10.04 for my personal tastes. I have already done a lot but I need help in continuing my endeavour., I come here, having Googled my query and receiving no help, to ask you lot.The icons on the main menu (the one that only has the black Ubuntu logo; not the default three menu one) looks simply vulgar so I want to remove them. I was able to do so in the past but now it eludes me. I think having the icons for everything looks unprofessional and cluttered. Is there a way I can remove those nasty icons from the menu?So it is clear, I'm talking about the Swiss Army knife, cards, and etc on the main menu and all the other icons on the sub-menus.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I go to Main Menu>Places, nothing but Computer and Network works correctly. Choosing Main Menu>Places>Downloads, for instance, generates a little disk activity, but never displays a window with the contents of the Downloads directory. In an effort to fix the problem, I just upgraded from 10.4 to 1.10, but the same thing still happens. How do I get the Main Menu>Places icons to display the appropriate windows?

I am running into one interesting scenario under OpenSuse 11.0, main menu keeps growing and top of it has been out of my screen. So many Recent Applications listed there. And I can't even make it to default by edit the GNOME Configuration Editor. I also tried to remove Recent Applications items from GNOME Configuration Editor, but just a blank pane left

View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Eclipse and am trying to create a launcher for it in the main menu. I finally figured out that a .desktop file needed to be made in /usr/share/applications, but I can't get the icon to show up. For the "Icon" field in the .desktop file, tried giving an absolute path to an icon in my home folder, and I also tried putting the icon in all the folders under /usr/share/icons and just putting "eclipse" (the icon file name) as the valueI had copied this last from some of the existing .desktop files that worked, but still had no luck. Does anyone know how to do this?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI uninstalled Google Earth and the "grey" icon remains no matter what I do. Also I had wine to run an MS application I uninstalled wine, before uninstalling the application. The icons remain, do I need to re-install wine again, uninstall the application then uninstall wine? The file that held the application I deleted, first because I had a brain fade.

THIS NEVER HAPPENED WHILE RUNNING WINDOWS VISTA OR WINDOWS XP. First icons will disapear and text will not work, images wont be there, system dock and explorer will just not work, the start menu will have nothing in it, and when i restart it, (manual) it will boot and show me specs and say "NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND" and when i go into BIOS it says IDE0:_______ not the hard drive name and size like it usually does.
Have an issue and not sure what or how it is caused.See attached screenshot.Whole Desktop shifts to half screen except menu bar and freezes.Menu functions and visible icons function but can not see the other half of my desktop. Only reboot brings things back.Linux Mint 7 Gloria 64Nvidia 9600 GSO video card - Nvidia 190 driversRunning Compiz with Cube, 3D & "snap" features enabled.Have not been able to determine what I do to cause it, seems to happen randomly.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04LTS with Gnome 2.30
I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:
1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.
2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.
4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".
5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.
6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.
7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.
I'm not sure if this is the right place for this. I'm not sure which veraion of linux I have but it was the latest veraon bfor the recent update. I accidentally hit alt ctrl f11 and my comp went inyo the grub menu. I've tried startx and it does nothing. About half the commands I enter do nothing and the other half r not found or are incorrect. The only vommand thw actualley work is reboot. I searched for this and read a grub guide but it did no good.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make the Debian sub menu appear by clicking 'on' the Debian box in System -> Preferences -> Main Menu but when I exit the Debian sub menu doesn't appear. One post I found talked about ROOT owning the directories, but not sure if that is the case with me or not.
I last asked this four years ago and got a response with a very lengthy script that had to be run at boot time, in terminal mode.
Does anybody know how to manually edit the main menu (gnome) launcher files? I would like to start a program as root but the only wasan get it to work is to set it up as a "Terminal Application" and put sudo in front of the command. Is there a way (similar to "system-config-firewall" ) can prompt for the root password an run the software as an "Application"
