SUSE :: Main Differences Between Opensuse And Ubuntu?
Feb 4, 2010
I'm thinking of trying out opensuse for a while. However, I'm used to Ubuntu so I'd like to know what the major differences are between the two distros. Hopefully, that will allow me to make a better comparison. I'm not talking about differences like "this is more 'polished' than that" or " this looks cooler than that".. I want to if there are differences in the file system... the software..
What are the major differences between SuSE linux 10.2 and 11.3? We are using 10.2 in our ASP environment and we want to upgrade and regression test 11.3, I was wondering if any linux experts our there can give me a rundown on the differences between the two versions. I know it is quite a leap but we are behind schedule on this one and need to catch up?
I wish to make a clone of my main hd running Suse Linux 10.1. I'd like the clone to act just as the original i.e. booting the system with 1 other hd and an cd drive. I think I hear the bearings on my 200 gb maxstor. I have a 300 gb maxstor that I wish to use as hda.
I have installed suse linux 11.3. I have jdk 1.6.20.0 and oracle 10g 10.2.0. When I tried to connect to a database through thin driver ,it is giving me the following error.
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: odata Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: odata at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:217) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:205) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:321) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:294) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:266)
Could not find the main class: odata. Program will exit.
I would like to try another distro and OpenSuse seems interesting. What are the differences between Ubuntu and OpenSuse? Also, I know that my wireless card will not work as soon as Suse is installed. I also know that I will have to use ndiswrapper to install it, my question on this is, I have the drivers (have Ubuntu in file name) and ndiswrapper I had to use for Ubuntu to get it to work, but will I be able to use all that or do I have to get a driver that is for Suse?
Is this the latest version. i don't know how old 11.4 is, but there weren't a great deal of updates. have added a few repos like packman etc.
Kept /home as the same and what a difference that made. i used to do a fresh install every time, it saved just about all my settings!!! just needed a few more programs and stuff but nothing major.
Really quick, clean install. just need to delete my old root partition for the old 11.3 system.
Would also just like to know are there many differences between 11.3 and 11.4?
I've noticed since switching from Kubuntu 10.04 to openSUSE 11.3 on my laptop that the Adobe Flash plugin seems much more prone to crash and fullscreen video playback (e.g. Hulu) performs terribly. I can't figure out what's different between the distros. In both cases, I'm using a 64-bit OS, Firefox and KDE, and the proprietary NVIDIA driver. Anyone know what might be happening, or more importantly, how to improve Flash stability and performance on 64-bit openSUSE?
Until now I have been running a single threaded cpu at single channel speed but yesterday I bought a 3.2 gig p4 for 20 bucks. It has hyperthreading and an 800 mhz fsb which supports dual channel speeds on the chipset. It hasn't arrived yet so I haven't put it in the system but what I would like to know is whether 11.4 work properly with these changes, and will it detect and implement them properly or will I need to reinstall it?
What would be the preferred method to establish a remote desktop session from one 11.2 machine to another 11.2 machine in the same location? No firewalls, local connection only. I've looked at VNC, RDP with xrdp, have not been able to establish a session to desktop. I would rather not use desktop sharing if possible, don't want invitations involved. Want something similar to hitting from Windows with VNC3and taking over the established desktop session. This is in my house, no security risks involved
differences between Kernel Default and Kernel Desktop? I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.
an opensource NON-GUI git client (for linux of course) that's really light/small. I just need to it to have the main functionality of a GIT client (downloading project for read only, clone, add, commit)
I though i would try out Clamav. After installation and a reboot, As su I issued freshclam.ClamAV update process started at Mon Apr 18 22:29:22 2011Downloading main.cvd [ 72%] the time at that point is 23:32 for 19 MB The download is so slow that I wonder if Clamav is really meant to be used.
Will i be able to boot openSUSE and other OS on same disk after replacing main board. i wish to set raid 5 but lack additional sata ports on main board. The boards have same pci, audio and graphic hardware.
Since the latest update the gnome main menu quits unexpectedly whenever I try to select any funtion e.g. shutdown. In addition the network manager does not show up and does not configure the network (wireless). This behavior is since the latest update last week. Has anybody seen this as well? How can I revert to the previous state?
I am running into one interesting scenario under OpenSuse 11.0, main menu keeps growing and top of it has been out of my screen. So many Recent Applications listed there. And I can't even make it to default by edit the GNOME Configuration Editor. I also tried to remove Recent Applications items from GNOME Configuration Editor, but just a blank pane left
Ive been running crunchbang on my system, and yesterday decided to try opensuse so i can install the novell client. I ran the live gnome cd and during installation I shrank my main partition down and created a new partition for opensuse. Installation went well other than sometimes programs close and make the part of my desktop that they occupied useless.
Question 1) I can see my crunch bang files through opensuse but i cannot find or boot into crunch bang.
question 2) Why are these programs closing and then killing my desktop? Say i have a Firefox in the top left of my desktop and it errors and closes. I go open Firefox again, anywhere that the old Firefox window was in ( not click able). My cursor will turn to the text cursor as soon as it enters the x y position. I have to restart the laptop to be able to click file or insert a web address.
I downloaded Eclipse and am trying to create a launcher for it in the main menu. I finally figured out that a .desktop file needed to be made in /usr/share/applications, but I can't get the icon to show up. For the "Icon" field in the .desktop file, tried giving an absolute path to an icon in my home folder, and I also tried putting the icon in all the folders under /usr/share/icons and just putting "eclipse" (the icon file name) as the valueI had copied this last from some of the existing .desktop files that worked, but still had no luck. Does anyone know how to do this?
Was wondering if there is a simple way to make the kickoff menu slightly larger than the panel similar to the way Windows 7 can have their (formerly-known-as) "Start" button larger?I have KDE on my laptop and am trying to make the best use of the small screen space. The Plasma Netbook Workspaces is alright, but I ended up returning to base KDE instead.
what are the main menus available in gnome and where can i find them. I am a fan of openSUSE but i dislike its menu coz it doesnot have more applications displayed within the menu(opens a new window instead) So can nyone tell me where can i find gnome main menus especially the mint menu?
it's my first time to try openSuse, i want to dual boot openSuse with windows vista home premium. anyone can tell me how to dual boot openSuse 11.2 with main os windows vista step by step start from partition harddisk which use by opensuse, and how to set the grub.
I am trying to Install Open Suse 11.3 (burned as an ISO DVD) along with existing Win 2008 R2 OS. When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!
I installed openoffice. installation seemed to go well, but openoffice doesn't show up under main/applications/office. in fact - it doesn't show anywhere.
I did find it using "find files/folders" ...in the folder:
There's a file called soffice of Type: Shell script that runs openoffice. How do I add this to my menu?
I have a Nook. When I plug it into the USB port on my system, a window pops up asking what I want to do with the new device. I can open it and access media/nook and move files into and out of the directory.
There's a button to "Safely dismount Nook" before I unplug it. I use that. Apparently, however, sometimes it doesn't respond. Now I have .hal-mtab-lock in my /media folder, along with Nook Main Memory and Nook Main Memory (1) folders. I can't delete any of them.
How do I a) delete these folders, and b) make sure it actually unmounts the device in the future?
Looking for source code packages I have configured the "Main repository (Sources)" into the yast list of repositories. However when I select the repository view in th esoftware manager it shows this repository as empty. Other repositories work. I have checked the link to the repository to be valid. I have added it automatically from the "Community repositories".
Seen as my ATI driver doesn't support Ubuntu 9.10 and neither does LinuxMCE [my two biggest bug bears at the moment] I am considering downgrading to Ubuntu 8.10.
I just wondered if there were any major differences or if I am likely to see any major issues because of things that were fixed or added to 9.10 that weren't available in 8.10.
I've seen in the forums people prefer or dislike Gnome/KDE. I looked around and the differences seem to be cosmetic and not that complicated. Are there any differences "under the hood"? What I mean by this is maybe the way programs behave, user options, etc. or is it all cosmetic?
I am not having a problem but I was just wondering, now that 10.10 launch is coming nearer, whether or not to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10. 10.4 is working fine and the only real reason for me to upgrade would be a better boot time (is there a better boot time with 10.10?) ... or am I missing an other important reason?
I have a box already has openSuse 11 32bits installed. I want to replace it with openSuse 11 64 bits. When I insert the openSuse 11 64 bits CD, I got error message "this is a 32 bit computer. Can not use 64 bit software". so How do I wipe out the old OS (32 bits), and install new OS (64 bits)?
