when one downloads non-rpm packages they are placed in a download window(by file roller).Could someone explain where exactly this download window is located in the directory tree? or is it? how does one install these packages from the terminal as root without knowing where their located?

MySQL used to have a command named 'perror' to show the meaning of error codes. It seems that this command no longer exists on 11.2 and 11.3. Did it change the name?

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.4, trying to install to an iSCSI partition. I'm using gPXE to boot to my iSCSI volume. This works fine, and pulls up grub with my boot options. I think boot the openSUSE 11.4 entry, which kicks off the boot process. I see the steps for running DHCP on the interface, but when it gets to iscsiadm, there's an error logging in to the iSCSI target portal along the lines of "15 - already exists. After that things start to fall apart - I/O errors, mainly, and the system completely fails to boot. What's going on and what this already exists message means?

Not sure but has support and updates for 11.2 come to an end? Every monday morning i make sure i'm upto date with updates etc. This am i get a message saying "repo not available" and having looked online to see if the directory openSUSE_11.2 exists, it doesn't.
At the same time loged in as a std user i regularily offer the command kdesu kwite. the command is accepted without error and the cursur returns on a new line as expected but kwrite doesn't start. I'm guessing that my last update has left me with a broken OS. It doesn't seem very long at all since i installed 11.2!

If someone has physical access to a machine, they can boot up with a live cd and chroot in to the filesystem as root. 1) Is there any way of a bash script script knowing if the computer was booted regularly or if it was chrooted into? 2) Is there a way to have a script run automatically when the user chroots in?

I have a rather strange issue I'm attempting to fix here. One of the servers I work with had a log file reach 2GB in size and stopped logging. The software which is logging to said file cannot be stopped or restarted and does not provide a way to rotate log files -- poor design, I know. So in my infinite wisdom (or stupidity, however you want to read that), I truncated the log file in place with:
Code:
>vmsproxy.log
When I realized the log file was not being appended to, I checked lsof output and it

I have searched and found nothing.... I'm trying to install the DRI driver to make my RV200 ATI card work with 2d and 3d features. I am new to this linux world but I have probably read now 4 hours of installation procedures without fully knowing what I'm really doing.... (Some instructions assume too much from the knowledge of the user I think)... So I'm at the step where I,m building the libdrm (Step 1.3 from this procedure [URL] and I get the following error: checking for PTHREADSTUBS... configure: error: Package requirements (pthread-stubs) were not met: No package 'pthread-stubs' found
Now yum tells me that no package exists with such name. I have searched on google quite a bit and I really don<t know where to start digging at this point.

I am running an older version of linux (RHEL 5 desktop) and I've been a bit spoiled by the mac desktop I had at my previous job. There are a few niceties I really miss, but the big one is the window management provided by SizeUp. The feature I'm looking for is a keyboard shortcut to resize and move windows to sides and corners of the screen. Is there such a tool for Linux?

I'm working on my first bash script. My script will do several things but right now I'm just trying to get the basic part of it down and working.I have a section that looks like this
Quote:
#/!bin/bash
SERVER=$1
if [ ! -d `ssh ${1} /somedir`];then
echo "Bad"
[code]...
The problem is that if you take that right now and run it, it will return back good in that it does exist. What I need it to do is pass back that it's bad because it doesn't exist (that is unless you actually do have that directory in your root).
