OpenSUSE :: Restoring A Replaced Folder Or File?

Aug 27, 2011

I turned my laptop in for repairs. I used someone else's USB drive to hold my pictures etc from that computer. I may have replaced the "pictures" folder tat was already on there, but I'm not sure if it was there in the first place. (Doesn't remember the "Are you sure you want to replace..." warning <.< >.>) I enabled hidden files, and there was a folder called .Trashes, instead of what you'd normally get. I copied my pictures onto my desktop, and then cleared the ones on the USB drive (left the folder). There was a folder named .000Trash-, or whatever it usually is. Only my pictures are in there. I'm confused, and don't tell me the pictures that were originally on the USB are gone forever. There's a tool for Windows, called Glary's Uilities that can get them back, supposedly. Not running windows, though

I have upgrade with a complete success my laptop from 9.10 to 10.04. I have only a small annoying thing: the little open folder triangle icon in Nautilus is replaced with a big horrible (IMHO) plus button. I'm java developer and I use Eclipse intensive and it uses the same icon for open Eclipse inside folder/package and it's not comfortable for me. In which way I can replace the system plus button icon with the previous triangle button icon?

Ubuntu :: Difficulty Restoring Home Folder From Backup

Before I reinstalled Ubuntu (this time allocating the entire disk to it as I never really used Windows any more) I backed up the entire contents of my /home folder using Deja Dup. General :: File's Group Changing When Replaced Via Scp

Oct 26, 2010

on my Fedora test server, there is a webdev group for all developers and the files under /var/www are owned by apache:webdev. Each developer is set up per normal, with each getting his/her own entry in /etc/group, then I add them to the webdev group (all from the command line). Things seemed OK, but when I edited a file as me the other day and updated it via scp, the ownership and group changed to that of my user, preventing a second dev from updating it later. How can I make sure that the file remains editable by all in the webdev group regardless of who updates it? Since it's a test server, the permissions are fairly loose at 775.

OpenSUSE :: 11.3 - Active Window Replaced By 4 Smaller

Dec 5, 2010

I like openSUSE 11.3 very much. When I move the mouse pointer to the upper left corner of the screen, my active window is immediately replaced by 4, smaller windows (I think that at the beginning I had a cube). I'm afraid this gobbles up a lot of memory and henceforth slows down my computer. Is it possible to have only one window "active" at the time? If I want, say a terminal screen, I can always activate it via the "Computer" button?

OpenSUSE :: Assign A Password To A File Or A Folder?

Sep 2, 2010

I know there are permissions one can assign to certain files and folders, but this won't come in handy if you need quick access to a file -and as User I often do- and don't want to slow down getting root permissions. You know, just open-close-move on. Is there a way, as user, to assign a password to a file or a folder? It would make the job a lot easier and more efficient.

Debian Multimedia :: Autostart.sh File Is Not Restoring Things?

Jun 13, 2010

I may have posted this in the wrong section before. I had it in General Questions and wasn't getting any feedback there, so I'll try here. Okay, onto the problem...I've decided to give openbox a try with Debian testing. I set up my right-click menu exactly how I want it, and everything else is set up perfectly.I installed trayer and tint2, along with nitrogen. I added the following lines to my ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh file, but things aren't loading/restoring as they should. Tint2 and trayer don't load at all, and nitrogen isn't restoring my wallpaper. All I get is a black screen with my cursor, but the ability to right-click and open the menu, so it's not like X is dead. I did set the default wallpaper by issuing the command nitrogen /home/john/Pictures/Wallpapers, where "Wallpapers" contains all of my background images.

Here is my autostart.sh file:
# Autostart file for openbox
nitrogen --restore &

Ubuntu :: Restoring Evolution From Backup - No Valid File Message

Jul 7, 2011

I've been using 11.04 Unity, & quite like it. I fired up Blender 2.49b the other day (not used it for a long time) & its behaviour was very erratic. Due to this I decided to reinstall 10.10 for the time being, until October or maybe even the 12.04 LTS. I backed everything up & reinstalled 10.10. I then tried to restore my Evolution from the Natty backup file, which simply didn't work. The message was something about it not being a valid file. I'm assuming this is a non backwards compatibility issue.

Any way getting Blender to work or restoring Evolution? With regard to Blender (in Natty); I've not tried proprietary drivers for my GPU yet as the open source defaults have always been fine, so that's an option. It means another reinstall (of Natty), but that really isn't such a big deal at this point. With regard to Evolution (in Maverick); I found a ppa but I'm unsure how to proceed once I've added it. Would I do an apt-get update & an apt-get install evolution?

OpenSUSE :: Test Out Restoring The Database?

I currently backup my database using MySQL Administrator. I wanted to test out restoring the database, so on my test server I deleted the database and restored the .sql file to a new schema with the same name as the old. one. It appears to complete the process just fine. But I noticed that the number of rows for the restored database is slightly less than what was backed up.

Is this normal or should the numbers be exactly the same? It's only a difference of about 28 rows. I seem to be able to view the data just fine in the query tool.

Ubuntu :: Drag File/Folder To Taskbar Button Creates Launcher, Not Bring Folder To Foreground?

May 20, 2011

After upgrading to 11.04, I noticed something strange, being that when I want to drag a file or folder from one Nautilus folder window to another which is not visible, I can no longer hold the item over said folder's taskbar button and wait for it to appear. It just shows the + for copy, and when I let go (which I have no choice but to eventually do), it creates a launcher to that item (I assume it's doing that, and not actually copying there, but the + has me unsure).

I've looked in Nautilus's preferences to see if this is some new behaviour that I can revert back to, but could find nothing there.

I'm of course using the Classic desktop with bottom panel being the taskbar. If you know how I can rectify this, please let me know, as the times I would want to create a file or folder launcher without the usual hassle would be rare, but I am constantly dragging stuff from one folder to another, and it would be a real pain to have to line up source and destination folders each time.

OpenSUSE Install :: Restoring Kernel Spew On Boot

Sep 29, 2010

I've recently performed a clean upgrade from 11.0 to 11.3 (wipe / partition to ext4, retain /home disk, swap partition etc.) and everything is fine, installed as Gnome distro with KDE3 from repos.Anyway, I've noticed that SuSE will say "doing fast boot" and suspend any console spew until after the kernel has finished with hardware detection and the like. I'd like to be able to see exactly what's happening with the kernel at boot, as I'm quite paranoid and in the event of system failure etc. it would be difficult to view the logs post-boot. Also, my IDE optical drives have a habit of sometimes only being partially detected due to the power line being somewhat intermittent, and I've seen the kernel attempt to re-stablish a link on 11.0, whereas I'd never be able to see that in 11.3 unless I see the console spew, so it would look like the system hanging on "doing fast boot".

Note: I do not want to disable splash=silent, unless spalsh has another option which will give me the desired functionality. I want to have a silent boot, with the option of going verbose with Esc; it's one of the things that I love about SuSE.Oh, and Grub was a nightmare as usual with disk ordering differing at run-time from config file and the total freeze at "loading stage2", so I had to manually fix that. Why does the installer seemingly ignore or revert the specific options I set for GRUB? I understand that the default options for GRUB are ok for single disk users, but my disk ordering is not overly exotic. I stress that this was not user error, as I've had the same issue from going from 10.2 to 10.3 to 11.0, even though they were clean grub installs (rewrites). /rant.
