Ubuntu Security :: Is The Root Password In 11.04 For A Single Program Or For All Programs

Sep 1, 2011

I have ubuntu 11.04 installed along side windows. And I often share files with windows computers. If I am installing a new package from ubuntu software center, and consquently I have to log in as root to do so, which means I have given the system 'privileges' as the program is being installed, I decide to go open mozilla, and surf suspicious sites on the net. Is it possible in that case for me to get a virus?

When we enter the password for the root user in order to run one program such as ubuntu software center, does that mean that all programs have root privileges for the time being (as the software center is installing the program)?

Ubuntu :: Password Lock A File/folder?

May 24, 2011

What's the easiest way to make a given file/folder (or multiple files) require a password upon opening moving copying etc, without encrypting the file/archive. The password should at least be manually defined upon establishing it, and preferably it could be modified.

I'm aware of the community belief that this is redundant. I don't want to know how to start from scratch a different way, or why I should or shouldn't do this or that. Just how to password lock a file/folder regardless of your feelings on the matter lol.

Ubuntu :: Allow To Single Click To Open A Folder/launch A Program?

Mar 5, 2011

I've looked, but no luck. Coming from Debian, 5.02, is there a setting in Ubuntu 10.10 that will allow me to single click to open a folder/launch a program. I don't mean the one i am using now that is set up with the mouse setting where it seems to be an assistive technologies application where there is a slider to set the dwell time (when i use this one, i get a menu opening at the same time as the application launch), but the one where the pointer turns to a little hand when it moves over the icon, and opens/launches the program when the button is released.

Fedora Security :: Reset The Root Password By Booting Into Single Usermode By Editing Grub

Apr 17, 2009

Being able to reset the root password by booting into single usermode by editing grub. This is a MAJOR flaw. I know it makes no real difference against internet bourne attacks, but even so I must say I found it shocking. The only way I've found to stop this is to encrypt the entire HDD, so noone could get into single user mode without first knowing the encryption key/password.

Ubuntu Security :: Home Folder Encryption Using Login Password

Mar 20, 2010

When installing the latest Distro of Mint (I believe this is not much different, if at all, from Ubuntu as far as this goes) I chose to have my Home folder encrypted using the login password. This was a function of the installation. What I was wondering about was how secure this was and if I should maybe use something to do a better encryption or not.

Ubuntu Security :: When Logged Into Every Day Account And Tried To Load The Program, It Prompted For Password?

Jul 8, 2010

I installed IPlist earlier today on my main/admin account (which I only use for installing programs. I don't use this account daily.) and everything was fine. When I logged into my every day account and tried to load the program, it prompted me for my password. When I entered it, I got this message:Quote:Failed to run /usr/sbin/ipblock start_gui as user root. The underlying authorization mechanism (sudo)t allow you to run this program. Contact the system administrator.Does this mean I am not able to use this program on this account, or is there a way around it? I'm new to Ubuntu so forgive me if I'm asking the obvious. I looked around and couldn't find an answer. I really don't want to use my admin account for daily activities, but I also really want to be able to use IPlist

Software :: Program: Compile Jpeg Into Single File, Like A Book, And Maintain Quality?

Mar 30, 2010

I've been trying to find a way to take a bunch of jpeg images and while maintaining their quality (no loss at all) compile them in such a way as to make one coherent file. Maybe something like a pdf, but while maintaining quality. I've tried converting to pdf and djvu, but the quality is always reduced, but if you know of a way to preserve quality, I'll use it.An alternative is an image viewer that can look inside archives, so I just make a zip or tgz of the images and then use the image viewer to access them. I've tried a few

OpenSUSE :: Assign A Password To A File Or A Folder?

Sep 2, 2010

I know there are permissions one can assign to certain files and folders, but this won't come in handy if you need quick access to a file -and as User I often do- and don't want to slow down getting root permissions. You know, just open-close-move on. Is there a way, as user, to assign a password to a file or a folder? It would make the job a lot easier and more efficient.

Security :: Isolate File Access For Program?

Mar 12, 2011

it is possible to change the root directory for a single, particular program. For example, I have an executable, 'miscreant.bin' that has all of it's required libraries in a directory named "libraries", in the same directory as the said executable. I can launch the program and make it use the libraries included with the executable rather than the system with:

Code:

/lib/ld-linux.so.2 --library-path ~/miscreant/libraries ~/miscreant/miscreant.bin
...or...

Code:

env LD_LIBRARY_PATH=~/miscreant/libraries ~/miscreant/miscreant.bin

With either, miscreant can be portable. But, I would also like to change the root directory (like chroot) of miscreant, so that the directory "~/miscreant/sandbox" becomes the root ("/"). So, if miscreant created a file named "/home/bryan/miscreant", it will be redirected to "~/miscreant/sandbox/home/bryan/miscreant". I am running Crunchbang 10 (Statler) on a 32-bit Atom netbook.

Security :: Read Password From AES Encryption From Txt File?

Jan 18, 2011

am fiddling around using an AES encrypted password which is stored in passwd.txt:cat ../passwd/passwd.txt
{AES}yTMWTrdbuPtCxikvv5udVDTQ70anBVVKvP+GPQEH1RY=Yet I like to interpret this password on the command line using svn checkout, so I do not have to type in my password ( which is visible on the command line):Exporting the variable SVNPASS reading it from the passwd.txt ( export SVNPASS=`cat <../passwd/passwd.txt`) won't work obviously as it interprets it as "text", so my question is, if there is a proper way to interpret this stored AES password so I can read it from the file? The alternative is to type in the password on the command line, but this needs to be invisible eitehr showing #, * or "hidden".
the last option is described: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/278/h...-shell-script/

Security :: Folder Permissions To Avoid File Upload By Http User?

Feb 24, 2011

However, configured a website on a dedicated server using WHM/cPanel. The site was uploaded using the master account for the website.

The security issue is public users are able to upload files on to my server via the website. They could even access the root and execute whatever they want on the server.

I have consulted with 2-3 Linux experts. According to them, the PHP user has rights to execute anything on the server or upload & store files in whichever folder they want.

Can I protect my folders to avoid file uploads via the website. The application has security vulnerabilites. However, I want to prevent hackers to enter my site until the vulnerabilities are fixed.
