I've installed Squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64 on my laptop (Alienware M17X R3, Intel i7 Sandybridge, ATI Technologies Inc Broadway [ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6800 Series])The screen is 17", with maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. After a default install of the operating system, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.My research so far has suggested that I need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provide xorg with the necessary resolution.
Again, by default, the xorg.conf file is not created. This leads me to believe that xorg is scanning my hardware at startup and providing me with whatever it thinks is appropriate. I tried following these instructions to generate an xorg.conf file. This process created an xorg.conf file under /root/.
When I copy this xorg.conf file to /etc/X11, I get a blank (i.e. black) screen. Deleting this file restores the default resolution 1280 x 1024.This system is dual booting with Windows 7. Under windows I am able to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I know my hardware is up to it.At this stage I have yet to install the drivers for the Radeon graphics card. What are my options regarding configuring xorg to give me a higher screen resolution?

I have a new F12 install, and my syslog is filling up with messages about USB. I have 2 USB devices plugged in directly to the mobo (bluetooth keyboard receiver, touchscreen), and it keeps redetecting them and then disabling the port for some reason.
A small sample of what keeps on repeating:

Code...
To find the appropriate firmware without knowing the make or brand of your wireless chip, you can use the command:
#fw-detect
But apparently debian package do not offer this useful tool, well, certainly for sidux exclusively.
Is there a package of fw-detect eventually?

Strange to me that a search only seemed to turn up some partial instructions for enabling detection of new USB devices (not discoverable in a default install) in 11.1 and no later. I assume perhaps incorrectly that things have changed since so attempted the following.
Objective: Discover an HTC G1 phone to use as a modem. So, after the phone is discoverable by SuSE the next step would be to configure the connection.
Current: It seems that this phone is listed in /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/
Attempt: I assumed incorrectly it seems that it should have been sufficient to simply create a file in the /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/ directory with the appropriate TargetVendor and TargetProduct codes as follows
Filename: 0bbr:0c01
Code:
########################################################
# HTC Android G1 Phone
DefaultVendor= 0x0bb4
DefaultProduct=0x0c01
[Code]....
I need the proper way to do this in OpenSuSE 11.3. A bonus would be if someone could verify that after the modem/phone is recognized whether the next step is to configure the device using YAST/modem.

My little 40 GiBs hdd is kind of small by current standards. When I start running out of space, I always wondered what else I could do with those hundreds of music videos? Put 'em on dvd!
But 11.3 doesn't detect the dvd-rom, much less the disc. 11.4 did and the sound was much better than with my other Linux os. How can we fix this?

I'm using openSUSE 11.2 in my desktop pc (mb asus m4a78-em), and is the second time I deal with this problem. The first time, I simply did a format, I installed fedora and then I reinstalled opensuse (because the usb neither is detect in the installation process, in opensuse). Now, I don't want to do that again.
I just did a clean install and then I updated all packages, among them was the kernel. (Note, I SUPOSE the kernel update is the problem, but quietly can be the kde update, I don't know). The problem itself is opensuse can't detect any usb device, among then are my wireless usb kit (mouse, keyboard). Currently I only have this input device (also a usb mouse, so I can't do anything in opensuse), but I think I will have borrow a ps2 keyboard, at least. The actual kernel is 2.6.31.12-0.2. In the grub, the usb works. When the first loading screen appears, all leds are turned off.I know it is little information, but it's this I can give for now. Let me know if I should give more.

I need to force 80 pin cable detect on my cdrom. According to the kernel-parameters.txt file you can do this by using libata.force=(port).(device) 80c Here is the actual explanation from the kernel file: libata.force=[LIBATA] Force configurations. The format is comma separated list of "[ID:]VAL" where ID is PORT[.DEVICE]. PORT and DEVICE are decimal numbers matching port, link or device. Basically, it matches the ATA ID string printed on console by libata. If the whole ID part is omitted, the last PORT and DEVICE values are used. If ID hasn't been specified yet, the configuration applies to all ports, links and devices.
My question is where do you find the proper port.device numbers? I'm guessing it's lspci but I'd rather be sure before I do something silly.. An actual working line for a cdrw as master on the first ide channel would be excellent. BTW my cdrw is detected as sr0 so the normal "ide" boot params won't work....

SuSE 11.4 is a wonderful release, but two chronic problems remain. The most serious is the inability to get Gnome to recognize an intel driver parameter specification in xorg.conf or 50-screen.conf with a predetermined, working screen specification. With the latest update that includes: [url]
Gnome will boot up in a strange resolution with a display of a pink screen and fragments of icons split and duplicated over the display. Teasing open the terminal parameter screen, terminal parameters (resolution, horizontal rate) appear to be correct. The terminal type is 'undefined', whether the screen is operating correctly or not, and any attempt to set defaults are refused. Perhaps the intel driver has not been selected by the operating system. Is there a way to specify a default screen driver?
This has been a chronic problem, now aggravated with the latest update to the point where the computer is now rendered inoperative.
Ironically, the other problem, that of the difficulty in downloading certain update files also remains. Had an elaborate update workaround procedure not been followed, the system would still be usable.

Trying to install SUSE on a perfectly working PC that was running Windows. Blew away all the partitions and formated the drives. When trying to install SUSE, Installer will not detect my two hard disks. Tried with version 10.x, 11.1 and 11.2, without success. My Mobo is a XFX GeForce 8209, and my SATA drives are both Seagates (1x120GB, 1x320GB). I've tried different SATA mode selection (i.e. SATA, AHCI, and RAID) without any success either.I've tried to look for SATA controller drivers for my Mobo, to try to load on Installer startup, but failed there too.

I have problems with my acer aspire M1201. I have added a 2GB RAM beside the 1GB stock RAM. Currently I have reformatted my stock Hitachi HDD 160GB and I have added another HDD in which it is a Samsung 500GB HDD SATA drive. I have successfully installed GNU/Linux Opensuse 11.2 OS in the new harddrive (Samsung). Besides all that, the other specifications are all stock. After 2 days of successful runs in the new OS and no problems at all, the OS hangs and fails to boot and displays this, Error 18 : Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS. I should mention also that while setting screensaver, when I chose OpenGL, the OS hangs and i have to hard-reset my pc. I suspect that the current BIOS version which is R03-B1 and product name ACRA8000-S03-990610-R03-B1 needed update due to new hardware. But currently there is no new downloads in Acer's website regarding my BIOS version. What should I do to run my Linux successfully? I should also mention that I haven't logged to the internet due to unsuccessful dialer which i have consulted my internet service provider and yet to rectify.

My driver is rt2870sta. I know it works because wicd can detect a WEP network, but it can't detect my WPA network despite me being right next to the hub. I consulted the wiki and have wpa_supplicant installed.
My /etc/network/interfaces file reads: # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
I am added to the group netdev as well.
On an unrelated point, my other usb wifi adapter uses ath9k_htc, but it isn't included with the kernel. I thought it was supposed to be?
