View 3 RepliesI'm trying to make my USB bootable with the OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit KDE iso image. When I open up SUSE Studio Image Writer (by following the Windows instructions here), it doesn't find the .iso image on my desktop. When I'm selecting the image, it's looking for a .raw file. Do I have to do some trickery to change the .iso image to a .raw?

View 2 Replies View RelatedOpen two different instances of OpenOffice Writer (two separate entries on the task bar). In one of them type the word test and highlight it and leave it that way. Now using the mouse pointer try switching between these two different OpenOffice Writers on the task bar. There shouldn't be much of a switching delay if any, going either way.
Now go to the OpenOffice Writer with "test" highlighted. Hit the <ctrl>C (copy) key about five times rapidly, then immediately click the mouse on the other OpenOffice Writer on the task bar. I am seeing up to a 5 second dead time delay between switching. There is no "busy" indication from the mouse pointer. The mouse pointer moves, but any clicks will not take effect during the 5 second delay, then any mouse clicks quickly take effect in a cascade after the delay is over.
Sometimes Klipper looses the <ctrl>C (copy) "test" text (Klipper still displays it its history) and refuses to <ctrl>V (paste) "test" any longer. When Klipper reaches this state a single <ctrl>C (copy) of "test" will cause the up to 5 second delay when switching.
The delay is only noticeable if you immediately switch on the task bar. If I do the copies and simply wait at least 5 seconds before switching, there is no delay. So, the switching itself isn't the cause.
I have reproduced this on PCs in a 32 bit 11.2 install and a 64 bit 11.2 install. Both installs are KDE 4.3.3 release 3 repos. Either this long delay shouldn't be happening or the mouse should at least do its busy indication thing and not act like everything is normal when it isn't.
I have set up a virtual machine under VMware Player 3.1.2 in Debian. Operating system of this virtual machine is a Windows Server 2003. I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?

I have been trying to make a HAL free openSUSE 11.3 build in suse studio for some time now. The problem is, I keep getting a K3B system configuration problem: No CD/DVD/BD writer found. I have been researching on the problem for almost a week and I can't seem to find a solution. I have also been reading about the packages that took over HAL's functionality. My system is mainly Gnome but I have included K3B as I consider it a superior solution to brasero.
Here is a brief overview of my system:Gnome 2.32 from Gnome Factory.
KDE 4.6 from KDE Stable.
K3B 2.0.2-8 from Packman.
Udev, Udisk, Upower and Media-player-info as HAL replacements.
Kernel 2.6.38 from Kernel Stable.
Latest Xorg.
First Question: I'm I missing any packages that provide some form of HAL's functionality? How were SUSE engineers able to achieve a HAL free openSUSE 11.4?
When I excluded HAL from the selected software packages, I recieved no errors. I'm guesing it's because of the updated KDE.
Cannot paste URL When I middle-paste into the URL box in the Hyperlink toolbar, nothing happens. Misleading support link The support link in Help/Support shows the general Novell support page. It is not clear how to get support for OpenOffice from there (especially for openSuSE). Hyperlink toolbar button performs no action In order to place a hyperlink at the cursor, you have to click the pull-down menu by the hyperlink button on the toolbar. Clicking on the button has no effect.
I think it should be equivalent to inserting the hyperlink as text. Persistent extending hyperlink mode When you place the insertion point immediately following a hyperlink and start typing, the hyperlink text extends; there is no way to cancel that effect. In particular, in the situation when a new document contains only a hyperlink, everything you type, either in front or at the end, becomes a part of it. The only way out of this situtation is to clear the hyperlink text and press Enter; the hyperlink is then replaced with an explicit URL and you can type further without extending the hyperlink.
No apply on Close There is another undocumented button in the Standard Toolbar that opens the Hyperlink dialog box. This box behaves in a very peculiar way: when you click on the button [Close], the box closes without updating anything. In order to apply the changes you have to press [Apply] and only then [Close]. This is rather surprising (at least for me), although it is better understandable when you consider that the Hyperlink dialog box is modeless. Travelling paste Steps to reproduce:
1. Edit a long document (containing several pages).
2. Mark some text on Page 1.
3. Middle-paste the text on Page 3.
Observe how you get transferred back to Page 1.
My document contains a parenthetical remark, like this:
(This is a long parenthetical remark.)
OpenOffice Writer advises me that the dot should rather be placed after the parenthesis:
(This is a long parenthetical remark).
I think OpenOffice Writer is wrong.
I am using cairo-dock, I want to add openoffice writer to the dock. Where do I find the icon for this? What is the equivalent of windows 'program files' in openSUSE. I'm thinking if I can find its directory, I can find its icon.

Have been having some problems with Libreoffice Writer crashing every time I try to save a file that contains any kind of multimedia (usually images) so I decided to completely remove the app and any trace of it and start again.
After complete removal I reinstalled from the Opensuse repo 3.3.1
The porblem I have now is that when I start typing in writer absolutely nothing happens. Wait approximately one minute and the text I typed appears. Try to backspac to delete or type some more and the behaviour persists.
Have I missed installation of some package?
I am trying to mount a file image, like this
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps
But I get the following:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I try ext3:
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps -t ext3
dmesg says:
error: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev loop6.
I've also tried ext2, vfat etc. How can I detect the filesystem type of apps.img?
Is it possible to delete Libre Office Writer and install open office again as Libre seems to be full of bugs and unusable? I have 11.3.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've installed Squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64 on my laptop (Alienware M17X R3, Intel i7 Sandybridge, ATI Technologies Inc Broadway [ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6800 Series])The screen is 17", with maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. After a default install of the operating system, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.My research so far has suggested that I need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provide xorg with the necessary resolution.
Again, by default, the xorg.conf file is not created. This leads me to believe that xorg is scanning my hardware at startup and providing me with whatever it thinks is appropriate. I tried following these instructions to generate an xorg.conf file. This process created an xorg.conf file under /root/.
When I copy this xorg.conf file to /etc/X11, I get a blank (i.e. black) screen. Deleting this file restores the default resolution 1280 x 1024.This system is dual booting with Windows 7. Under windows I am able to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I know my hardware is up to it.At this stage I have yet to install the drivers for the Radeon graphics card. What are my options regarding configuring xorg to give me a higher screen resolution?
I have a new F12 install, and my syslog is filling up with messages about USB. I have 2 USB devices plugged in directly to the mobo (bluetooth keyboard receiver, touchscreen), and it keeps redetecting them and then disabling the port for some reason.

To find the appropriate firmware without knowing the make or brand of your wireless chip, you can use the command:
#fw-detect
But apparently debian package do not offer this useful tool, well, certainly for sidux exclusively.
Is there a package of fw-detect eventually?
on windows there are apps that detect my hardware and list the model numbers and even serial numbers.
is there an app for opensuse that will detect all my hardware and list it like this:

chipset: intel 243434 northbridge
ram slots: 2 ddr3

View 9 Replies View RelatedStrange to me that a search only seemed to turn up some partial instructions for enabling detection of new USB devices (not discoverable in a default install) in 11.1 and no later. I assume perhaps incorrectly that things have changed since so attempted the following.
Objective: Discover an HTC G1 phone to use as a modem. So, after the phone is discoverable by SuSE the next step would be to configure the connection.
Current: It seems that this phone is listed in /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/
Attempt: I assumed incorrectly it seems that it should have been sufficient to simply create a file in the /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/ directory with the appropriate TargetVendor and TargetProduct codes as follows
Filename: 0bbr:0c01
Code:
########################################################
# HTC Android G1 Phone
DefaultVendor= 0x0bb4
DefaultProduct=0x0c01
[Code]....
I need the proper way to do this in OpenSuSE 11.3. A bonus would be if someone could verify that after the modem/phone is recognized whether the next step is to configure the device using YAST/modem.
My little 40 GiBs hdd is kind of small by current standards. When I start running out of space, I always wondered what else I could do with those hundreds of music videos? Put 'em on dvd!
But 11.3 doesn't detect the dvd-rom, much less the disc. 11.4 did and the sound was much better than with my other Linux os. How can we fix this?
I'm having a little problem here with my notebook: when I connect the headphone plugin in the 3.5mm output nothing happens. I mean, the sound continue to flow on the speakers as the headphone wasn't plugged in. Using Sony Vaio VGN-FW378J with openSUSE 11.1 and Banshee 1.4.3.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using openSUSE 11.2 in my desktop pc (mb asus m4a78-em), and is the second time I deal with this problem. The first time, I simply did a format, I installed fedora and then I reinstalled opensuse (because the usb neither is detect in the installation process, in opensuse). Now, I don't want to do that again.
I just did a clean install and then I updated all packages, among them was the kernel. (Note, I SUPOSE the kernel update is the problem, but quietly can be the kde update, I don't know). The problem itself is opensuse can't detect any usb device, among then are my wireless usb kit (mouse, keyboard). Currently I only have this input device (also a usb mouse, so I can't do anything in opensuse), but I think I will have borrow a ps2 keyboard, at least. The actual kernel is 2.6.31.12-0.2. In the grub, the usb works. When the first loading screen appears, all leds are turned off.I know it is little information, but it's this I can give for now. Let me know if I should give more.
opensuse 11.3 cannot detect my wirless card.

I need to force 80 pin cable detect on my cdrom. According to the kernel-parameters.txt file you can do this by using libata.force=(port).(device) 80c Here is the actual explanation from the kernel file: libata.force=[LIBATA] Force configurations. The format is comma separated list of "[ID:]VAL" where ID is PORT[.DEVICE]. PORT and DEVICE are decimal numbers matching port, link or device. Basically, it matches the ATA ID string printed on console by libata. If the whole ID part is omitted, the last PORT and DEVICE values are used. If ID hasn't been specified yet, the configuration applies to all ports, links and devices.
My question is where do you find the proper port.device numbers? I'm guessing it's lspci but I'd rather be sure before I do something silly.. An actual working line for a cdrw as master on the first ide channel would be excellent. BTW my cdrw is detected as sr0 so the normal "ide" boot params won't work....
SuSE 11.4 is a wonderful release, but two chronic problems remain. The most serious is the inability to get Gnome to recognize an intel driver parameter specification in xorg.conf or 50-screen.conf with a predetermined, working screen specification. With the latest update that includes: [url]
Gnome will boot up in a strange resolution with a display of a pink screen and fragments of icons split and duplicated over the display. Teasing open the terminal parameter screen, terminal parameters (resolution, horizontal rate) appear to be correct. The terminal type is 'undefined', whether the screen is operating correctly or not, and any attempt to set defaults are refused. Perhaps the intel driver has not been selected by the operating system. Is there a way to specify a default screen driver?
This has been a chronic problem, now aggravated with the latest update to the point where the computer is now rendered inoperative.
Ironically, the other problem, that of the difficulty in downloading certain update files also remains. Had an elaborate update workaround procedure not been followed, the system would still be usable.
