Debian Multimedia :: XOrg Auto-detect Failing To Detect Max Screen Resolution

May 29, 2011

I've installed Squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64 on my laptop (Alienware M17X R3, Intel i7 Sandybridge, ATI Technologies Inc Broadway [ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6800 Series])The screen is 17", with maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. After a default install of the operating system, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.My research so far has suggested that I need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provide xorg with the necessary resolution.

Again, by default, the xorg.conf file is not created. This leads me to believe that xorg is scanning my hardware at startup and providing me with whatever it thinks is appropriate. I tried following these instructions to generate an xorg.conf file. This process created an xorg.conf file under /root/.

When I copy this xorg.conf file to /etc/X11, I get a blank (i.e. black) screen. Deleting this file restores the default resolution 1280 x 1024.This system is dual booting with Windows 7. Under windows I am able to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I know my hardware is up to it.At this stage I have yet to install the drivers for the Radeon graphics card. What are my options regarding configuring xorg to give me a higher screen resolution?

Debian :: Where To Find The Fw-detect Command ? (for Firmware / Wireless Detect)

Jan 12, 2010

Code...
To find the appropriate firmware without knowing the make or brand of your wireless chip, you can use the command:

#fw-detect

But apparently debian package do not offer this useful tool, well, certainly for sidux exclusively.

Is there a package of fw-detect eventually?

Ubuntu Networking :: 9.10 Detect Wi-fi But Could Not Connect?

Jan 15, 2010

I could not connect to any wireless network on my laptop with ubuntu 9.10. Network manager detects all wireless networks avaliable, but could not connect to any of them. When I try to connect, system asks for wpa-key, but typing it gives no result. I tried home and office network, but it is the same. There is WinXP installed on the other disc partition and no problem with wireless connection at all.

I have Acer 3680 with broadcom wireless adapter 4318 (driver was installed via ndiswrapper). I've already spent hours, browsing the Internet, but it does not help unfortunately, so I'll appreciate any advice of experienced user.

Code:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Or 9.04 Does Not Detect Windows 7 X64

Feb 23, 2010

I'd like to have a dual-boot system with WIN7 and Ubuntu. I already have Windows 7 installed. I tried the 9.10 installation but the partitioner says i don't have any Operating Systems installed. I read a few threads about this type of issue and i didn't find any solution. Then i found a discussion saying that there is a problem with GRUB2 in 9.10 and that the problem is not present in 9.04. Then i tried the installation with 9.04 but got exactly the same problem: the partitioner does not detect Windows 7. Basically i have this system:

- Windows 7 Professional x64
- 1 TB HDD with 4 partitions with 100Gb each (NTFS)
- ~600 GB unpartitioned free space
- Processor Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
- ASUS P5Q MOBO
- ATI Radeon HD 4550

I tried both the x32 (i386) and x64 (AMD) versions of 9.10 and the x64 version of 9.04. I don't have the WIN7 partition that some installations seem to have, at least i don't see it under Disk Management (Computer Management).

Ubuntu :: Corrupt Mbr/grub Cannot Detect HDD

Apr 9, 2010

I have a dual boot windows xp/ubuntu64 9.04 rig at home. Ubuntu is installed alongside windows(if i worded that correctly?). well last night i got the infamous error #15. so i popped in the live cd and messed around with grub. well i changed grubs boot to point to h0,5 which is where ubuntu resides and as you can guess i can not boot. i want to change it back to h0,0 or h0,1 however the hard drive is undetected.

I tried windows repair console but same thing cannot detect the drive. I pulled the drive out slipped it in my other machine and still same thing. so my question is how can i go about editing the grub menu.lst if i can't mount the drive?

Maybe i can just install a new grub/mbr? but i cant figure out hot to mount the drive.

It appears Ubuntu can't detect USB flash drives.

Ubuntu :: LiveCD Will Not Detect Ext4 HDD That Had 9.10

May 4, 2010

I am trying to do a fresh install on the HDD that had 9.10, a 80GB ext4 drive. All that shows up is my other HDD, a 160 GB ext3 drive. Why is this happening? "ls /dev/|grep sd" only returns sda and sda1. My 80GB drive has a few partitions, one for swap for instance.

Edit for clarification:
2 harddrives in 9.10:
80 GB HDD /dev/sda
1 ext4 partition that has ubuntu installed (/dev/sda1)
1 extended partition (/dev/sda2) for swap (/dev/sda5)
160 GB HDD /dev/sdb
1 ext3 partition /dev/sdb1

Only the 160GB HDD is detected when using the liveCD (as /dev/sda and /dev/sda1). I can mount it just fine, but my 80GB HDD is not detected. After ejecting, I can boot my 80GB HDD just fine...

Ubuntu Networking :: Why Won't 10.04 Detect Any Wireless

Jun 20, 2010

I recently downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 into my Windows Vista laptop & I have downloaded the one that can run alongside my current system, so I'm running dual OS. At the start up screen where I choose the OS, I choose Ubuntu & it loads fine. Everything looks perfect except that it won't connect to or detect any wireless connections. I have tried clicking the Network Manager icon & clicking New Connection. I typed in the SSID & security key for my wireless connection/router & after I hit create, a small window pops up saying "Wireless Disconnected: you are now working offline" or something like that. Nothing happens/changes. There is no internet connection on Ubuntu OS. But when I switch over to my Vista OS, the internet works perfectly (obviously.)

Ubuntu :: Could Not Detect Graphics Or KB Or Mouse

Feb 22, 2011

I have run into a problem with a existing workstation I can't seem to figure out. My configuration:Ubuntu 10.10 64 ASUS M2N68-AM Plus MB w/ Nvidia Geforce 7025 graphics.Has been running for almost exactly one year beautifully. System suddenly froze. When I rebooted, system stopped with message saying it could not detect graphics or KB or mouse. I suspected hardware failure but when I booted from live CD, It ran fine. I then ran e2fsck -c and found no bad blocks but 1 messed up inode which it fixed.

I assume at this point the only problem is some lost configuration on video. I first tried apt-get nvidia drivers. this got rid of the message but now X will not start because of "no valid modes". Tried running nvidia-xconfig but it exits without changing anything. All user files seem to be OK. I'm not going to have to nuke this thing just to restore X am I?
