View 3 RepliesIt drives me craxzy, and I can't find anything I can do about it.When I start a new app--say FireFox, and I return to the window I was in, as soon as each window loads it insists that IT should become the active window.This is a general issue with me--all window type OS's seem to do this, but what I want (and THAT is supposed to be what the computer will do 4 me--what I want!No matter what, I want the active window to remain the active window regardless of what other windows are doing--including newly opening windows. If I want to do something with a new window, I'll go there on my own.I'm often writing and want to research something so will open a browser window, but it takes time for the programs to load & during that time I usually want to continue with whatever I was doing until I finish the thought. my touchpad worked out of the Box after insalling Xubunut 11.04 and did so ever since. But since yesterday it doesn't. It worked when i shut down the laptop and didn't when i booted later. How do i fix this? Yes i read the article about thouchpads.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy audio and video used to work great in skype. Two days ago connected my laptop and TV, in order to use the TV as a second monitor, to watch a football match (I only have IPTV). Only thing I had to do was to go to System -> Preferences -> Sound and switch (in the hardware tab) my Internal Audio Hardware from Analog Stereo Duplex to Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analog Stereo Input.
So after the match I switched it back to Analog Stereo Duplex and proceeded to skype with my girlfriend. Problem was, the mic stopped working. It works just fine in 'Input' tab of my sound preferences, as well as in sound recorder. She, in skype, heard nothing but static. Test call doesn't work either. Now I've done all the usual stuff, Skype isn't allowed to automatically adjust mixer levels and my mic is already boosted. I've reinstalled skype and everything. I'm running out of ideas.
when i tried to watch a videos video today, i noticed that i suddenly didn't have sound anymore just yesterday, it still worked fine. changing the video volume didn't do anything, so i looked at the mixer icon in the taskbar - and noticed to my surprise that it was suddenly set to mute, without me ever having touched it!
i set it back to full volume, but still nothing. i then tried to play ordinary videos in nmy video layer, but also there - no sound! so it's not limited to flash videos. the sound test in yast doesn't play any sound, either, it produced just a very short popping sound, that's all. i tried turning off pulse audio there, but that didn't change anything, so i turned it on again (i use pulse audio for sound).
next, i tried the kde control panel, but got no test sound either, just again the very short popping sound on htting the test button and nothing else. i've even tried switching the preference from xine (which i normally use) to gstreamer, but that didn't change anything either. then i did a reboot and tried things again, but no change. finally, i checked my headphones. they were plugged in properly, and plugging them out and back in again didn't do anything either.
so i'm out of ideas what i could still try. sound hardware is realtek hd onboard sound, which is identified as "hda ati sb alc889a analog". kde is 4.4 rc3, which i've been using already since over a week without problems, so i doubt that's the problem.
I am running the latest ubuntu and I am having trouble getting networking sorted. I have 2 networks, one wired (eth0) and one wireless (wlan0). I connect to the internet using wireless. The problem is that I can only successfully connect to the internet if I disconnect from eth0. I have hit this problem with Windows machines and the solution was to adjust the "interface metric" in "Advanced TCP/IP Settings" so that the wireless was the preferred connection. How can I achieve something similar in Ubuntu?

I have Wine installed in ubuntu/Kubuntu Jaunty and I can play games like Roller Coaster Tycoon fine in it (it works great and has sound) but when I try to use my disk for Ear training (which is an .exe file) I can view/use the program perfectly except there is no sound, the disk works in the school computers so I know its not faulty, but the sound just doesn't work in Wine.
I changed the format in Wine to all the different Windows (Vista, XP, 2000, etc.) and the sound didn't work in them either, everything in Alsa mixer is turned up 100% and I've tested it with both my head phones and computer speakers, but theres never any sound.

I decided to have my laptop with dual boot. Already having Win7, I tried installing Ubuntu on another partition. While installation was in progress, during the step where we manually choose partitions to install ubuntu on, I was asked to provide a swap area for ease of operation. I provided another active partition for this supposing that this "swap area" is needed only during the installation. Unfortunately, as I found out later that this makes that important active partition to be unavailable to work upon both in windows as well as Ubuntu. I need to use this partition again.
I tried the "disc utility" in System--->Administration section to change the partition type to "hpfs/ntfs". After a longtime it showed me error (Unable to perform the operation). What could have gone wrong? I absolutely need that drive back, as it contains valuable media files.
I have this weird program: dns2tcpc (creates a dns tunnel). I would like it to run at startup. However, I found that the program doesn't work when backgrounded! EX: dns2tcpc -z dns.domain.com -l 8888 208.67.222.222 Works, and I can use SSH to port 8888. However, if I try to background it, like: dns2tcpc -z dns.domain.com -l 8888 208.67.222.222 & Then trying to connect to SSH won't get any response
Now, I know this is a bug in dns2tcpc, and I really don't feel like compiling it or anything (I may have to), so is there any way to "trick" an application into thinking it's running in the foreground (like typing the command from the terminal window)? (Bonus if no addition installation is required)
I had originally followed the advice at Mauriat Miranda's Fedora Nvidia Driver Install Guide [URL] for installing nvidia's display driver on my HP Pavilion system 64 bit running Fedora 11. I had used his first method which just installs the relevant kernel module kmod-nvidia from RPMFusion. He also suggested an alternate method: obtaining Nvidia's installer NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.36-pkg2.run and using that. I downloaded it from Nvidia, but I didn't run it.
I recently lost X. This had happened previously after a kernel upgrade, and I just used grub to boot an earlier kernel to recover X, and then installed the upgraded kernel module to fix the problem. But this time, being deeply involved in something else, I panicked slightly, and, using dumb terminal mode I ran the Nvidia installer. It asked me to make various choices and in response to my answers, it decided to compile a new kernel module. This recovered X, but I then compounded things by installing the updated kmod-nvidia.
I realized afterwards that using both methods might create some conflicts, but X seemed to run properly. (I can tell because graphics in the program Maple doesn't work properly with the default drivers provided by Fedora 11.) Since then, when I restart nvidia, I get.

I presume there is something in the JWM window manager - or Puppy Linux Lupu 5.01 itself that is conflicting with the normal loading of GMPLAYER....

Suddenly within the last 4-5 days my mail-notification program stopped starting.Googling the error really doesn't give much help, it sounds like the same error message is in tens of libraries.Anyone know what might be going on?Running Ubuntu Jaunty, and already tried reinstalling the program. It's the normal mail-notification from the Add/Remove Programs thing.
Apparently it only does this when it tries to connect to the internet. It runs fine when I'm not connected, but crashes as soon as I hit refresh. (And also crashes at startup when I'm already connected to the internet.)

Another question is if there is a way to limit a program's access to the internet. For example KCalender.. The things I type up in there may be stored somewhere. How can I disable complete access to the internet for that program and any other program so they can't backup, share, check etc. ?

With this, there are a lot of programs that I run on my windows machine for tracking and monitoring severe weather that moves in to our area. As it turns out, every program that I run on my windows machine has zero support for linux. I already know about WINE & VM to run these particular programs, but what I am more interested in is seeing if anyone out there (preferably an active storm spotter or chaser) knows of any great programs for Ubuntu that can provide the same functionality and level of detail as say StormLab, InterWARN, or GRlevelX. I use my laptop heavily while out storm spotting for our city and such, so I need programs that are reliable and accurate. For now, I am still stuck using my windows machine when I go out for these storms, but I would really like to try and use Ubuntu on my next rainy day adventure.

There's something very annoying about how Nautilus opens "image viewer" windows.
They open, I can see them, but when I press the keyboard, it's still Nautilus which gets the commands.
This is because Nautilus stays the active window!
Most annoyingly, when I want to have a quick look at an image, and then close it, Nautilus closes instead (Alt+F4).
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't seem to work on my computer. When I install it (tried both CD, DVD and USB-stick) all I see is "Ubuntu" with a number of dots underneath, and after a while the screen turns black.I also tried the alternative ISO (with non-graphical interface), and that installation worked; I could partition the HD, enter username and password and it copied all files to the HD. But when it said it was finnished, and I rebooted the computer (without the installation media) "Ubuntu" shows on screen with a nuber of dots underneath, and after a while the screen turns black.The computer is new, has an i5-750 CPU, 4GB RAM and a XFX Radeon 5670 1GB graphics adapter and two identical HD:s, one with a working Windows 7 installation (disconnected when I try installing Ubuntu).
View 5 Replies View RelatedUpgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 using standard Update Manager procedure. Now themes don't work. When I change the theme, the window decorations change accordingly, but the contents of the windows (controls, panels) are in the raw X look (I don't know how else to put it) and do not change regardless of theme selection. I've tried customizing the theme and selecting something different on the "Controls" tab, but it doesn't work.
X is working properly with Nvidia driver, Compiz is working properly as well. Killing Compiz didn't help with the theme problem.I used 64-bit Lucid, so I guess it upgraded to 64-bit Maverick.

View 5 Replies View RelatedEvery time I've tried to install 9.10, it will not run. I get "Grub - " and it just hangs there. I shouldn't have to deal with that. Why can't I just have a happy install like usual? 9.10 / Grub2 is not stable and it needs fixing. Grub2 sucks. It's in beta and no-one tells you that unless you do some looking. I've tried to fix it, can't. Linux really sucks for me right now.

I installed from Ubuntu Karmic minimal, so i did install KDE.
i have update-manager-kde, update-notifier-kde and kpackage kit installed. for manual installing i use synaptic though.
in the repositry-manager the automatic updates are anabled (daily).
but it is not checking for updates. i checked manually in synaptic, and there are updates available.
so, how do i let it check automaticly for updates?
I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 on a laptop for my parents. They use SeaMonkey with Enigmail for their e-mail. They complained that they couldn't read their e-mail.
I did apt-get install enigmail.
Here are the versions that are installed:
enigmail 2:0.95.7-1ubuntu2
seamonkey 1.1.17+nobinonly-0ubuntu1
Unfortunately, enigmail didn't show up in SeaMonkey. I looked at the files it installed. It looks like it only points Thunderbird at enigmail, but not SeaMonkey.
How do I get enigmail to work with SeaMonkey? Is there another package I can install? Or do I have to manually move around the files?
I'm trying to install 10.04 but my Logitech diNovo Edge wireless USB keyboard doesn't work.
