OpenSUSE Install :: Stability Of Tumbleweed Repo On Very Generic Intel Hardware?
Mar 23, 2011So my netbook has overall very generic intel hardware Atom processor and Intel Graphic card the only component that requires a proprietary driver is the broadcom wireless card (unfortunately brcm40821 does not work for me) I am running opensuse 11.4 and I am willing to update the broadcom-wl driver each time there is a new kernel update in tumbleweed I am just wondering as of now, how stable is Tumbleweed (anyone has had any problem or success with tumbleweed, welcome to share in this post)
PS: I read (in the announcement/news section) with the new kernel (2.6.38-18), samba is finally working fine alongside apparmor.
OpenSUSE :: Version Of Evolution - Running The Evolution Mail System Under Fedora - 15 / KDE
Jul 26, 2011I've been running the Evolution mail system under Fedora-15/KDE for about a month now, and it has some very serious problems. I just noticed that it is available for SUSE, and figured that since KDE is the principal desktop supported by KDE the SUSE version may be fixed. Before I go through the very tedious process of getting the SUSE version to compile on Fedora, I'd like to know whether anyone has seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution:It ignores font control from the KDE Settings->Applications Appearance window, both KDE font control and GTK+ font control, also its own internal font control window.
It has trouble sending messages to an SMTP server, sometimes taking a l-o-n-g time, sometimes timing out. This can be temporarily cured by restarting it It crashes when a filter attempts to refile an outgoing message. It often asks if I want to recover messages that have never been lost. It often locks up receiving mail from a remote POP3 server. I can live with these, except for items 1 and 2, since I have workarounds. If you are fairly sure that you have not seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution
OpenSUSE :: Restoring Evolution 2.32.1.2 Settings Into Evolution 2.30
Feb 20, 2011I have been using Fedora 14, which has Evolution 2.32.1 but have recently also installed openSUSE 11.3, which has Evolution 2.30.1.2. I would like to make openSUSE my primary distribution, and so I would like to restore my Evolution settings from Fedora, but Evolution complains that the backup file is invalid. I have tried copying the folders in the backup to their appropriate locations in openSUSE with no luck. I have also tried manually copying with instructions for older versions of openSUSE, but with no luck.
An obvious guess at what might be the problem seems to be that I am trying to restore settings from a newer version to an older version? An obvious thing to try would be to upgrade to Evolution 2.32, but Evolution has a long list of dependencies so before jumping into that fun I thought I would ask if anyone else has had similar problems and found a straight-forward solution. I still have access to my emails in Fedora so this is not hugely pressing, and if upgrading to 11.4 will do the trick then I can just wait for that.

Apr 4, 2011I have an issue with my Dlink DWA 547 802.11n PCI adapter, I'm under LUCID fully updated.I have no trouble connecting to any wireless but after a few minutes I'm loosing the connectivity strenght (getting ping reply from my router that vary from 2ms to 200ms). But as soon as I'm rescanning the network using the command (sudo iwlist wlan0 scan) everything is fine (constant 1-2ms ping). I'm using wicd as network manager. I have tried to schedule a job in crontab to launch every 10min a network scan command, but didn't succeed to have it working, morehover I don't think that's the good way.

Mar 27, 2009I have atheros wifi chip and I got wifi through madwifi. I was using f9 and my wifi connection in very stable. Then I tried F10. It has already firmware for atheros in it kernel. It get connect through wireless network (wifi) but soon it disconnect. I updated NetworkManager but no fruitful result came. Finally again I switched to f9 and I got very stable connection. But I am missing the features of f10. I hope that the connection will be stable in f11. I tried to install f11 but it says /dev/root not found again it shows that something clock time at the time of booting and it stop booting. So finally I choose to use f9.

May 8, 20101. Sometimes when I try to shutdown my computer the display becomes filled with pixels of different colors as shown in the image (The problem is very random so I was not able to take a photo, I tried to recreate the effect using GIMP). Then the display turns off (Analog power saving mode) But my system never turns off.
2. While working on my computer the display sometimes goes kaput and blinks as in the second image. It stops responding completely I am not even able to go to terminal (Ctrl + Alt + F1). Leaving me with no option but to use the reset button. Causing me to loose all the work in progress.
3. Firefox responds very slowly upon closing it takes 5-6 seconds for the window to close.
PS:- KMS is also disabled in my system. Enabling it didn't improve stability. and here is the output of my videocard (lshw)

Ubuntu Networking :: No Wireless Stability - Router Not Found
Feb 6, 2011Ubuntu 10.04 x86. Yesterday I installed 10.10 and had lots of trouble with wireless stability. I formatted the partition and installed 10.04. My wireless router does not show up in the available routers list. Neither in the list that immediately shows or under the More networks submenu. Lots of other routers from adjacent homes show up, but not mine in the other room.
Why? It shows up on all of my other computers. My MacBook, Windows 7 (different partition on same box), my older Ubuntu netbook,and it showed up on a previous install of 10.10 (though it could not maintain the connection longer than 5 minutes). It will not show up on Ubuntu 10.04. I've tried manually entering the information to connect, but it doesn't see it. I don't know what to do.

Feb 13, 2011I'm going to be installing Vinux which is Linux for the Visually Impaired, based on Ubuntu, onto most any computers I can get my hands on to give to the VI community around my area. I'd like to know what would be a good method to stress test each computer to ensure that each one will operate at an adequate speed without freeze-ups. Sorry, I can't be specific about the computers. I'll be taking whatever gets donated from the public and from businesses, desktops and laptops, whatever comes my way. I don't want to send out any headaches to anyone by giving them a dog-tired slow or a freezing computer that won't even operate.

Apr 5, 2010I had configured the evolution to send/recive email. After it had been configured, it could receive emails. Suddendly it can't fetch email anymore. In the inbox of evolution, there were about 200 emails. There are maybe 5K emails in the server, I guessed. I'm not sure whether it's the problem that there's one email in the server too big, so the evolution can not fetch it. The error of evolution is: error while fetching email. Evolution version: Evolution 2.28.0. OS version: Linux xxx2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686.PAE #1 SMP Wed Mar 3 04:57:21 UTC 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux I'm sure my network is fine, I use pop3 to receive email.

OpenSUSE :: Evolution Bug With KDE 11.2?
Jul 2, 2010I really like the evolution program and it seems to install just fine on the gnome version of openSuse 11.2 but if I install on KDE it's missing some icon files and I have to copy them from /usr/share/icons/gnome/NNxNN/actions/[filename].png to /usr/share/icons/oxygen/NNxNN/actions/[filename].png. The icon that staands out missing as soon as it's installed is th eone for send/receive email. it's file name is mail-send-receive.png
What I have to do is:install evolution and observe that the icon image is busted because the icon file isn't where it's supposed to be.
hand copy the files from /gnome to /oxygen (this doesn't fix it)
uninstall evolution
reinstall evolution
now the busted icon for send/receive mail is all better.How do I get this info to the folks that maintain evolution so they can add the missing icons to the install?

May 11, 2011Since I move from opensuse 11.3 to 11.4 Evolution adressbooks do not workI appreciate any tips in howto fix addressbooks or how to migrate address books. Evolution 2.30.1.2 (OS 11.3) has the data in ~./evolution while Evolution 2.32.1 (OS 11.4) has the data in ~/local/share/evolution.These are observations from what I have tried.1. The backup from Evo 2.3O.1.2 does not work under restore in 2.32.12. If copy ~/.evolution and ~/.gconfig/apps/evolution form 2.30.1.2 to 2.32.1 (that was the way to migrate under 2.30 and before).
2.1 the setup is transfer and works2.2 the mail is transfer and works (including the folders)2.3 the contact folders are corrupted: some can not be open, some work, some can not be deleted. I change permission without any success. 3. I delete ~/evolution (which has no effect in the new evolution), ~/.gconf/apps/evolution and ~./local/share/evolution. Then I reboot. (this is key) After I start evolution everything is new. I can make contact folders and they seems to work fine. I can add and delete contacts etc. Now If I import vcards created from evolution 2.30.1.2as way to preserve all the contacts)and try to restore the folders something weird happens: the contacts transfer to the folder specified but they are also transfer to the other folders. If I delete the contacts in one folder all the duplicates are also gone. If I tried to delete the folders I can not do it

Because the exchange plugin didn't work i uninstalled evolution and removed the ppa. Now when i try to install evolution from the software centre i get this: Package dependencies cannot be resolved This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time.
it asks me if I want to repair the catalog, i say yes.

Sep 16, 2010I am probably in the wrong post / tread/ whatever. But maybe someone can put me on the right track.
I try to configure evolution on my opensuse, for using my outlook account. I tryed a lot, and tryed to understand a lot, but all seems to be very diffucult.
What I completely miss on the internet / documentation / everywhere is what to enter where. I can open in my outlook, the account settings. But names there, are not the same names in evolution.
And what to use, mapi, imapi mapi+ whatever. I have no clue about that.
What I found today, is something about proxy. since I was unable to ping a server host with a very strange name. NLCLUEXA11.connect1.local But I also have somewhere a exchange proxy.
Whith a https://www..... url ?? and an NTLM Authentication, no idea about that.
There is also an web interface, webclient, but that also seems to go wrong.
Is there any simple explanation, or just a simple tutorial, which show the outlook settings, and where to put them in the evolution settings ??

Apr 10, 2011I had a problem with my OpenSUSE with Tumbleweed repository enabled that required me to do a hard power off of my ASUS N61JV-X2 notebook PC. I had Evolution running at the time. When I did a cold boot of my laptop and I ran Evolution again, it does not display my e-mail messages anymore. In fact, I had to install Mozilla Thunderbird with the Enigmail extension so that I can read and write e-mail messages.
How do I fix Evolution so that it will retrieve and display my e-mail messages and I can write new ones using this software package?

I cannot get the monthly view to start the week on Sunday. The settings seem right but they don't stick. Restarting Evolution always defaults to a week start on Monday even though the defaults display Sunday. I've viewed the default settings the following two ways:
Within Evolution... Edit > Preferences > Calendar and Tasks > week starts on "Sunday"
GNOME Configuration editor.../apps/evolution/calendar/display/week_start_day = 0 (Sunday)
