I'm having all kinds of stability issues running the latest version of vmware workstation on Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit. Anyone know if this is a stable config or not? If not, which version/architecture of Ubuntu is?
View 3 RepliesI have an issue with my Dlink DWA 547 802.11n PCI adapter, I'm under LUCID fully updated.I have no trouble connecting to any wireless but after a few minutes I'm loosing the connectivity strenght (getting ping reply from my router that vary from 2ms to 200ms). But as soon as I'm rescanning the network using the command (sudo iwlist wlan0 scan) everything is fine (constant 1-2ms ping). I'm using wicd as network manager. I have tried to schedule a job in crontab to launch every 10min a network scan command, but didn't succeed to have it working, morehover I don't think that's the good way.

Sometimes when I try to shutdown my computer the display becomes filled with pixels of different colors as shown in the image (The problem is very random so I was not able to take a photo, I tried to recreate the effect using GIMP). Then the display turns off (Analog power saving mode) But my system never turns off.
2. While working on my computer the display sometimes goes kaput and blinks as in the second image. It stops responding completely I am not even able to go to terminal (Ctrl + Alt + F1). Leaving me with no option but to use the reset button. Causing me to loose all the work in progress.
3. Firefox responds very slowly upon closing it takes 5-6 seconds for the window to close.
PS:- KMS is also disabled in my system. Enabling it didn't improve stability. and here is the output of my videocard (lshw)

Ubuntu 10.04 x86. Yesterday I installed 10.10 and had lots of trouble with wireless stability. I formatted the partition and installed 10.04. My wireless router does not show up in the available routers list. Neither in the list that immediately shows or under the More networks submenu. Lots of other routers from adjacent homes show up, but not mine in the other room.
Why? It shows up on all of my other computers. My MacBook, Windows 7 (different partition on same box), my older Ubuntu netbook,and it showed up on a previous install of 10.10 (though it could not maintain the connection longer than 5 minutes). It will not show up on Ubuntu 10.04. I've tried manually entering the information to connect, but it doesn't see it. I don't know what to do.
I'm going to be installing Vinux which is Linux for the Visually Impaired, based on Ubuntu, onto most any computers I can get my hands on to give to the VI community around my area. I'd like to know what would be a good method to stress test each computer to ensure that each one will operate at an adequate speed without freeze-ups. Sorry, I can't be specific about the computers. I'll be taking whatever gets donated from the public and from businesses, desktops and laptops, whatever comes my way. I don't want to send out any headaches to anyone by giving them a dog-tired slow or a freezing computer that won't even operate.

Now that testing and Sid are now using LibreOffice, is the database any more stable? Or...is there an alternative database package to be used only on a local machine without a server?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have atheros wifi chip and I got wifi through madwifi. I was using f9 and my wifi connection in very stable. Then I tried F10. It has already firmware for atheros in it kernel. It get connect through wireless network (wifi) but soon it disconnect. I updated NetworkManager but no fruitful result came. Finally again I switched to f9 and I got very stable connection. But I am missing the features of f10. I hope that the connection will be stable in f11. I tried to install f11 but it says /dev/root not found again it shows that something clock time at the time of booting and it stop booting. So finally I choose to use f9.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo my netbook has overall very generic intel hardware Atom processor and Intel Graphic card the only component that requires a proprietary driver is the broadcom wireless card (unfortunately brcm40821 does not work for me) I am running opensuse 11.4 and I am willing to update the broadcom-wl driver each time there is a new kernel update in tumbleweed I am just wondering as of now, how stable is Tumbleweed (anyone has had any problem or success with tumbleweed, welcome to share in this post)
PS: I read (in the announcement/news section) with the new kernel (2.6.38-18), samba is finally working fine alongside apparmor.
I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu Linux (11.04) into latest VMware workstation (7.1.4 build-385536). I have tried to install the VMware tools ISO that came with VMware workstation but It didn't work and the installation seemed real sloppy anyways.
I installed the open VMware tools from synaptic within the guest linux and restarted, everything seemed to have been installed just fine but VMware Workstation doesn't detect it. I'm not sure if the tools are outdated, silent errors happened, or if any manual post installation steps need to be taken.

I'm developing an embedded Linux (it is almost over now). What I'm struggling with is the system goes unstable by cutting power source frequently and it does not boot anymore. It even does not perform fsck. The system just has a XFCE with a fixed Qt App autoloaded to display some charts. My question is that how commercial embedded Linux distros (like Wifi AP's management Linux, ...) avoid this problem?

I completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.
I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task?
I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
I'm trying to access the VMWare console from firefox using the VMWare plugin. The problem is that it doesn't work on Firefox version 3.6.8. So how can I access the console?

I installed Vmware the other day on my laptop, ran fine, installed a couple of programs. Now, a few days later, booted it up tried to find Vmware, but its not there in the menu. Oracle VM Virtualbox is installed (was installed before vmware, but had problems with getting files over to it), has that somehow got rid of vmware? If so, how do i get rid of Oracle VM?

I have an ubuntu 7.04 which is currently hosting a drupal installation on VMWare Workstation 6, and I wanted to upgrade the linux to 10.10, however when I tried apt-get update it did not work. how to proceed with this? I'm running Ubuntu 9.1 i386 in test with Vmware 2.0.2. I used Radu Cotescu's patch and instructions to get vmware installed. Everything seems to be running fine in the guest machine (CentOS 5), except I can't ssh from the Ubuntu host to the guest machine.
This guest is a clone of one that is running under on my Ubuntu 8.1 host and networking is fine there. I'm wondering if there were changes to routing or bridging in Ubuntu 9.1 to cause this. I've been digging through google for a while, but haven't seen others reporting any issues. This is definitely particular to Karmic Koala though.

My routing table on the Ubuntu 8.1 host differs by the link-local line only, and the guests are exactly the same.I can ssh from the guest into the host, as 192.168.0.2 is the hosts ip on the vm network. The host should be able to ssh to the guest as it does in Ubuntu 8.1.
Which version is easiest to get VMware going? Lucid, Karmic, or something else?

Click on new machine and go to console and power on.

I suspect this is a problem with Mozilla Firefox 3.6.3.
I just completed clean install of Ubuntu Linux 10.04 to run Nagios. I have Nagios up and running properly and monitoring my windows servers. I have a couple of questions that I can't seem to find the answer to:
1. I cannot ping the Ubuntu VM from other machines on the same subnet. I can ping the Host system from other machines on the same subnet. I can also log on to the Ubuntu VM and ping all other machines on the local subnet. I can also ping the Ubuntu VM from the VMWare host system.
2. I have installed apache and the Nagios software is running correctly but I can't use a web browser to attach to the Nagios web page from other machines on my local subnet. I wonder is this is related to my inability to ping the Ubuntu Linux machine.
Some things I have tried:
1. Disable IPV6
2. Check to make sure firewall is turned off. I ran iptables -L and see no rules
I installed Vmware and the installaion failed. I want to remove it and go back to using VirtualBox (simply because I am familiar with the software). However I am having some problems removing VMWare from my pc. It does not appear in the ubuntu software center and was wondering what command I can use to remove it. sudo ap-get remove vmware does not work (maybe my command is wrong?).
the installation did not complete, it installed fine from the installer (.sh file) however once I start it up it starts to install other components ie. Networking etc. This is where it does not finish installing.
