General :: Embedded Stability - Unstable By Cutting Power Source Frequently And It Does Not Boot Anymore

Apr 11, 2011

I'm developing an embedded Linux (it is almost over now). What I'm struggling with is the system goes unstable by cutting power source frequently and it does not boot anymore. It even does not perform fsck. The system just has a XFCE with a fixed Qt App autoloaded to display some charts. My question is that how commercial embedded Linux distros (like Wifi AP's management Linux, ...) avoid this problem?

Debian :: Eth0 Connection Frequently "cutting Out"?

Jan 16, 2010

I've been messing around with debian A LOT, getting to know it, seeing what makes it run. I recently screwed up big time and nearly rendered it unusable, but I managed to slowly repair it. However, I was unable to do any kind of auto-DHCP connections. Now when I put eth0 up, the connection will cut out after about 5 seconds, and I can't connect any more until I either restart the networking service or do ifdown then ifup.So can anyone suggest to me any logs I should look for, or any packages I should make absolutelyure I have installed and configured properly? Any config logs that need posting

Ubuntu :: Going Green - PowerTop And Cutting On Power Consumption?

Feb 27, 2010

Judging by the number of responses (close to zero) to other threads about powertop on this forum, I have little hope in getting any answers. However, I do not know where else could I ask. PowerTop tell me that even after applying almost all the tips and tricks from lesswatts.org, my laptop still consumes over 72 Watts while idling.

Code:
< Detailed C-state information is not P-states (frequencies)
1.60 Ghz 0.0%
800 Mhz 100.0%
Wakeups-from-idle per second : 451.1 interval: 10.0s
Power usage (5 minute ACPI estimate) : 72.5 W (0.3 hours left)
Top causes for wakeups:

[Code]...

Suggestion: Enable USB autosuspend by pressing the U key or adding usbcore.autosuspend=1 to the kernel command line in the grub config This is when I am not touching the laptop. When I am surfing the web or listen to music, it goes up to 2000+ wakeups! How do I cut it further? I am getting like 20-30 minutes max on battery and this is unacceptable cause in Windows I get at least 3 times that.

General :: Execute A Command When Power Source Changes

May 20, 2010

My laptop has a dead battery. Even when it's fully charged, if the power cable is pulled out it only lasts for about 4 minutes before it dies. I'm running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 32-Bit. What I want to do is create some sort of script or program that will immediately set my computer to go into hibernation once it detects that the power cable has gone dead. I'm willing to look into all ways of doing this. I can program in C, but I'm not familiar with the API used to manage Power Management in Linux.

General :: Kernel 2.6.31.20 Does Not Boot Anymore

Apr 6, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 9.10. Since a few days my I cannot boot anymore with the newest kernel (2.6.31-20.31). Instead I get a menu with a menu that lets me boot in recovery mode or boot from previous kernels (2.6.31-19).

In recovery mode for 2.6.31.20 it hangs at: Waiting for root file system. It boots just fine with kernel 2.6.31.19 except that apache and cups have to be reinstalled after every reboot. Everthing else seems to work without any problem.

Is there a way to do a system recovery, like in Win XP, going back to a system state from before the problems started?

I get the message after restarting under the heading: [1.469482] Kernel panic- not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (8,2). I am very surprised that this will happen especially after installing the security updates from the Update Manager. Is there a way I can still save my Ubuntu?

General :: Multi-booting, Can't Boot Windows 7 Anymore?

Aug 2, 2011

I have Linux Mint and Windows 7 installed on my laptop, and recently tried tinkering with EasyBCD, to use the Windows multi-boot loader instead of grub. Well, that didn't work out too well, because I ended up with the Windows boot loader with two options, Windows 7 and Linux Mint, however the Linux Mint entry just redirected me to grub, which wasn't what I intended.

I tried to put things the way they were, with grub as the only boot loader, and figured I'd do so by setting EasyBCD to skip the multi boot screen and going straight to the Linux Mint entry, which corresponds to grub.Well, now when I boot, I get the grub screen, but if I select the Windows 7 entry, it just redirects me back to grub, so I can't access Windows 7 right now. What can I do to fix this? Can I edit the Windows boot loader from within Linux?

General :: Cutting Ubuntu To Bone For Virtualbox VM

Mar 31, 2010

I've been looking around for a Linux variant which will install only the software I need rather than everything Ubuntu (for example) puts in by default. This is to create a virtual machine in Virtualbox which has bash, apache, python, perl, SQLite, openssh and a few other programs but nothing else. I'd prefer to go with Ubuntu if possible but another modern distro would do as well (I like using apt-get and yum rather than downloading/compiling etc).

SuseStudio.com, which is probably the best so far.Ubuntu 9.10, by pressing F4 to get the boot options on the install disc, but there is no minimal installation (oops! had the alternate disc instead of the server disc).Arch Linux, slightly confusing install procedure but I might go back and try again.Gentoo, started well but fairly soon the HD on the virtual machine went to 2Gb, even before the installation had started in earnest (I'd partitioned the disks is all).I realise there are various "small" Linuxes around like Puppy, Feather, DSL, etc, but they seem to be aimed at desktop users or as a techie's toolkit, and I want a small-as-possible server distro which can be managed with tools like apt or yum or similar.

General :: Diagnosis An Unstable System / Seeing File System Is Not Clean During Boot?

So 2 days ago everything was all fine on my machine. Has been for about a month, but all of a sudden as of yesterday I have no sound, I am seeing IRQ interupts on boot, During boot I am seeing file system is not clean, , and swap space is being used for the first time while doing normal task, etc. These are 2 new hard drives in RAID 1 with ReiserFS. Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Win7 And 10.04 - Unstable

May 24, 2010

Does ANYONE have a stable dual boot Win7 & Ubuntu 10.04 system? I have been trying for WEEKS to get a computer configured for my student lab. I get things going and everything seems to work for a few days. And then for no reason, the next time I reboot, Grub just seems to commit suicide.

Latest example. Win 7 & Ubuntu have been co-existing perfectly fine for about a week. Iow, I do something, then reboot, and the grub menu comes up - I select something and it boots my OS of choice for that session.

But today, I've been putting the last few touches on this computer before I use Clonezilla to copy it to all of the computers in the lab. You know - hard stuff like:

* set the default profile in Windows

* install a printer in both Ubuntu & Windows

* set a background image for the logon screens that have our "don't do anything bad" policy.

how there is nothing in there that should mess w/ grub or the boot loader, right? Yet I reboot the computer, I get to where grub should load - and BARF - I get the Bios splash screen again and the computer reboots on it's own. What the !@(#$&!@#$% is going on that this keeps happening to begin with?

General :: Puppy On Hard Drive Fails To Boot After Power Cut

Apr 19, 2011

I'm very new to Linux and recently setup a desktop PC with Puppy 5.2.5. only. I chose to have a permanent install on the hard drive and loaded additional PETS and utilities as I thought needed for my use. Last night after immediately booting up the PC I had a power cut lasting a few minutes. When power returned and I repowered the PC, I found during Puppy's boot sequence it reported an error and remained in what appeared to be a console mode - did not carry through and load my desktop. So I inserted the Puppy CD and booted from that but I'm afraid I'm not familiar enough with Linux to understand how I can get back my original desktop setup and run once again from my hard drive without having to go back to scratch.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot - Win7 Not Being Able To Boot Anymore

Apr 29, 2011

So we install Windows 7 home premium. Then in goes the Ubuntu Disk. Ubuntu seems to think that the windows 7 partition is one big lump of unallocated space. Tried multiple re-installs of Windows 7, all concluding the same. A bit of googling told me that it has something to do with partition tables or something. I even tried to use Gdisk to delete Gpt from the windows disk, which - as I have absolutely no idea what any of it means, - resulted in me screwing up the entire Win7 partition hence win7 not being able to boot anymore.

i've seen on the internet include a lot of technical garble which I don't understand. I've been using Linux for a while, but as far as partitioning and dual booting is concerned, it's always gone smoothly for me up until now

OpenSUSE Install :: No Video After Boot With IBM X3650 And Embedded ES1000 Display Adapter?

Aug 2, 2010

I was wondering if anyone else ran into and issue with 11.3 with an IBM x3650 server using the embedded graphics card. As a reference this exact machine was working under 11.2. I am aware that there were significant changed in how video works in 11.3.

While installing and during the initial start of the operating system I can see graphical output, OPEN SUSE logo and such.

During the boot process the screen goes blank. The server is still running and I am able to ssh to the machine, but there is no access to the console.

Below is a segment of the /var/log/boot.msg that shows some errors. I can provide more logs if that would assist in tracking this down.

I did a quick google search on ES1000 and i2c and saw the same errors reported with Ubuntu version but nothing for OPENSUSE. There seemed to be a bug that was fixed in that kernel.

General :: Minimize Typing When Frequently Changing Directories?

Aug 4, 2010

What are some good Linux commands to make switching between different directories on the command line easier?

I often have to switch between different directories with long names, e.g.

Typically, I use tab completion, so it's something like this:

But it's annoying because all these names are so similar, so tab completion doesn't really save much work.

What tricks do you use to minimize typing in such situations?

I do use pushd and popd sometimes, but here it won't help much because I don't visit the directories in a given order.

For a nice solution, see the accepted answer to my other, related question. Basically, just create an alternative cd command:

function cd2 { select a in $1*; do cd $a; break; done }

It will list all possible completions at once:

And you can pick one by typing its number.

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot Into 10.10 Anymore?

Feb 4, 2011

Having enjoyed Ubuntu 10.10 for about a week parallel to Win7, I can't boot it anymore. I suppose it's because of the following: on win7 I have the Acronis Disk Director Suite (version 10.0). The Acronis OS Selector comes with it. So I thought it might be a good idea installing it before I install linux to be able to switch between the OS's afterwards. Then having ubuntu installed I ran windows and uninstalled the OS selector as I saw that ubuntu has it's own bootloader and the Acronis one didn't even run. I restarted my Laptop and win7 started automatically. No bootloader anymore. So I installed the Acronis OS Selector again and it can't even find linux (It was able to find both OS's before...) even though it shows the linux-partition (I ran the predefined installation where ubuntu partitions on its own) is still installed. So Ubuntu is still on there I just can't run it.

Where did my Ubuntu bootloader go??? (I NEED Ubuntu cuz Windows7 doesn't support my soundcard...)
