since the last SuSE online update (last Wednesday?) the X server no longer starts on our notebook (ATI HD 4200) so we only have the consoles available, which limits the WAF heavily . We were using SuSE 11.3 with the Gnome desktop for about one months and it worked smoothly, but since the update (which included a kernel update to 2.6.34.7-0.7) the X server tries to start 5 times and then gives up. All logfiles end with:
Code:
...
[ 13.899] Segmentation fault at address 0x3c
[ 13.899]
Fatal server error:
[Code]....
I used the ati driver ati-fglrxG02-kmp-desktop, version 8.762_k2.6.34.0_12-31.1 from the ATI Suse repository. To solve the problem I already switched to the Xorg driver which lead to a color distorted display but no segmentation fault. But I'd like to get the ati driver running again.

It was running squeeze before it became stable. X was running fine and loading automatically on booting. Then I did not use it for some time. Then I ran apt-get updates and upgrades after squeeze became stable. A few packages were kept back. So I did aptitude dist-upgradeIt installed some things and maybe removed some things. After that it will boot only toconsole. When I do startx on the command line, X session starts and everything seems normal. But it will not boot to the GUI like before. I also checked in the Synaptic and saw xorg and xserver-xorg still installed

I have been running thunderbird.2.0.0.24+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 successfully for some time now under Hardy. This morning I tried to run it and I get the "wait" indication but then nothing. I looked in my home folder and the folder .mozilla-thunderbird seems to be liked to .thunderbird, but both are listed in red and black. (Doesn't sound good.) I saw a similar bug for a newer version of thunderbird, but the symptoms in my case seem different.

I have a problem. I'm using the latest Debian stable, Lenny. I am trying to get my usb wifi card working.
The Debian wiki advised me to upgrade my kernel to 2.6.30 using backports, because the drivers for my wifi chip are supposedly in the newer kernel.
So thats what I did. The install went fine. However, after rebooting the computer hangs when it is starting gdm. Only the desktop background appears with some fuzzy stripe over it, the mouse doesn't respond. Pressing ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing. I can only restart with ctrl+alt+del.
I can still use the computer with the old kernel. No problems there. I tryed disabling GDM and rebooting again with the new kernel. It boots up and works fine on command line. However when I type startx it hangs, just like before.
I'm not an expert, but I'm suspecting there might be problems with the graphic drivers in the new kernel.
When I installed lenny at first, X started fine. However 3d acceleration was not functioning. I got help from IRC, I had to install some package to enable direct rendering. Don't remember which one anymore.

I have a very simple backup script like so:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
tar -cvf /media/Media_Drive/tarball/homemazal.tar /home/mazal
tar -cvf /media/Media_Drive/tarball/werkstok.tar /media/4D84-E758
What I want to know is what can I add to the top to automatically close Evolution before the tar's starts. I'm worried that with Evolution open that some files might not be correctly backed up.

I found this email in my inbox. From time to time it's showing up here then Evolution starts downloading messages again and duplicates all my inbox. I think.

Evolution has been working fine, then it just will not load. I typed evolution it in the terminal and received the following errors.
[Code]...
I'm on Ubuntu 10.10, and have tried to update, un-install (and purge), reinstall - same errors. Then I un-installed (purged) and deleted all evolution folders and files (re-installed gnome-panel - it was deleted when I manually removed the evolution files), then reinstalled. same errors.. I've tried to install and un-install through the terminal, synaptic package manager and through the software center, with no luck.

Since Feb 23-24, Evolution (2.28.3) no longer receives any e-mail. When I click send/receive, the usual dialog appears, but finishes real quick, with no messages downloaded. I know there are messages, and Evolution is in online mode. I have tried removing the "remember password" option on all accounts, but evo won't ask for a new password when I try to receive mail. I have tried to delete all accounts from within evolution, and create new ones, but no luck. All accounts are pop servers, and I have also tried turning pop3 extensions off.
Has anyone got any suggestions as to what is wrong here? I'll provide some log files, but will have to clean up usernames, servers etc.

This morning when I opened Evolution, It asked me for a password. It didn't like my login pass. It wanted an old password I used to use. When I click on Evolution I get Enter password to unlock your login keyring The password you use to log in to your computer no longer matches that of your login keyring.

I've been running the Evolution mail system under Fedora-15/KDE for about a month now, and it has some very serious problems. I just noticed that it is available for SUSE, and figured that since KDE is the principal desktop supported by KDE the SUSE version may be fixed. Before I go through the very tedious process of getting the SUSE version to compile on Fedora, I'd like to know whether anyone has seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution:It ignores font control from the KDE Settings->Applications Appearance window, both KDE font control and GTK+ font control, also its own internal font control window.
It has trouble sending messages to an SMTP server, sometimes taking a l-o-n-g time, sometimes timing out. This can be temporarily cured by restarting it It crashes when a filter attempts to refile an outgoing message. It often asks if I want to recover messages that have never been lost. It often locks up receiving mail from a remote POP3 server. I can live with these, except for items 1 and 2, since I have workarounds. If you are fairly sure that you have not seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution

I have been using Fedora 14, which has Evolution 2.32.1 but have recently also installed openSUSE 11.3, which has Evolution 2.30.1.2. I would like to make openSUSE my primary distribution, and so I would like to restore my Evolution settings from Fedora, but Evolution complains that the backup file is invalid. I have tried copying the folders in the backup to their appropriate locations in openSUSE with no luck. I have also tried manually copying with instructions for older versions of openSUSE, but with no luck.
An obvious guess at what might be the problem seems to be that I am trying to restore settings from a newer version to an older version? An obvious thing to try would be to upgrade to Evolution 2.32, but Evolution has a long list of dependencies so before jumping into that fun I thought I would ask if anyone else has had similar problems and found a straight-forward solution. I still have access to my emails in Fedora so this is not hugely pressing, and if upgrading to 11.4 will do the trick then I can just wait for that.

In 11.3 Compiz .8.x worked fine but not .9.x
In 11.4 "compiz --replace" displays no error messages, but starts up with no window decorations.
In ccsm window decorations, kde comparability, OpenGL and composting are all checked. Even tried as a different user after rm'ing the compiz-1 folder.
Composting using Kwin works fine.

I have a problem with LibreOffice 3.3.3.1 (from the libreoffice stable repository) and some (not all!) .doc files. When opening some .doc files LibreOffices starts and directly closes . The same problem occurs (for the same files) with LibreOffice from the unstable repository. When I go back to the LibreOffice version (3.3.1) shiped with 11.4. everything works fine. Hence, if you have problems with some .doc files downgrade to 3.3.1.

I have tried two distros - Mandriva and OpenSuse. Both provide the same results, though Mandriva booted...but still the same problem, after installing blank screen comes up and nothing. Keyboard touch bad, mouse nothing happens. I would prefer openSuse but may have to switch.
Equipment:
Acer 7740 17" laptop
Intel i3-330M Chipset
4Gig DDR3 RAM 1066
Intel Integrated HD Video 128MB
Install Win7 64-Bit no issues, wiped and installed Linux and I cannot get past this blank screen. Installation works, no problem installed packages etc. When coming up on 1st boot, login - boom nothing? Searching the web and I suspect the Intel graphics are the problem but I'm not sure.
I bought this laptop to put Linux on it solely for a personal project of using Linux for a year. I'm an IT professional for 23 years and comfortable with CLI.

Looks like this has gone walkabout. It used to be in the Education repo and still is but is missing several updates. This repo has also gone missing from wiki pages and from list of community repos in YAST. Seems a bit suspicious as though something has been changed again. Is GRAMPS now in a different repo or is it no longer supported in openSUSE? Is Education repo defunct?

All of a sudden the screensaver starts when I play movies in kaffeine. I noticed this yesterday. It didn't do that before. I don't know what I've done to make this happen. I'm using Kaffeine v. 1.0-svn3 on a 64 bit OpenSUSE 11.3. My screensaver is kometen4 from kde-look.org.

I'm having a problem with my screen in opensuse 11.4.Everything is ok until the login screen. After the login, when kde starts, the screen gets inverted, rotating 180 grades. The system performance is very slow when this happens. I tried to disable the KMS to use the default system driver, what worked. But with this option, I don't have the performance and resolution available with KMS.

I am having a problem with my touch-pad on my Dell Inspiron 1525. It needs to be adjusted for speed and it starts scrolling unexpectedly. I understand I need to install a driver for it but don't know how. The problem I see with Linux is that it's not easy to install software for new users. I have ran into a few One click Installs and managed to work them out quite easily. Usually the documentation you find online to install programs assumes the end user knows how to install.I need to know how to install the touch-pad driver from start to finish and all steps in between.

I succeed in uTorrent server's install as a daemon in Opensuse 11.4 and it works great. I've already change my fstab file to add a network drive to be mount on startup localize in /mnt/freebox/. This is also working great. The issue is during the startup, utorrent starts before fstab and thus the network drive is unmount.
In my utorrent init.d daemon script, I ask for $Network starts in first time: Code: Required-Start: $network Is there any possibilities to order the startup and ask to fstab to start before uTorrent Daemon?
