OpenSUSE :: Setting Up Virtual Box Again

Jun 19, 2010

I am trying to install again virtual box after a new clean install of 11.2. After install and running: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
I get error:
Stopping VirtualBox kernel module done
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel module failed
(Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong)

Here is the log file:
Makefile:162: Warning: using /usr/src/linux as the source directory of your Linux kernel. If this is not correct, specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again.
Makefile:170: *** Error: /usr/src/linux (version 2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop) does not match the current kernel (version 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop). Stop.

OpenSUSE Network :: Setting Up Minimual (lightweight) Virtual Server Under Virtualbox

May 23, 2011

The only things i need out of it are: mars_nwe (Netware server under Linux) and a reverse telnet server (the dos machine is a bbs) I need the virtual server to support a very old dos machine, and while i COULD use samba for drive mapping, the VNC server I'm useing on the dos machine is a progrm called TINY which pretty much means i'm stuck useing the novell dos network stack.

how best to configure opensuse for this? I'm running the install off of the live-dvd which has quite a bit selected by default. I'm not in need of an x-server or a desktop manager, as this will be a set it up and forget about it once it works VM

Networking :: Setting Up A Virtual Network Using Virtualbox?

Oct 26, 2010

So I'm wanting to learn a bit more about networking (ok, ALOT more), and I was thinking of trying to setup a virtual network via Virtualbox on my desktop, and as seperated from the internet as humanly possible (preferably no connection whatsoever).

Ignoring a few of the obvious problems (like my little dual core potentially running half a dozen VMs on 2G RAM), I am wanting some guidance as to what programs I would need or some documentation on setting things up.

I have no real clue where I would want to start with this, but I want it as a testbed for future toying with, to learn from, and just generally as something for me to hack at to see what does what, how, and why.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up A Virtual Host In Apache ?

Feb 22, 2011

I am trying to set up an Apache2 virtual host to test sites I make from my own computer.

I used this guide to set up my LAMP and vHost, The LAMP stack seems to be working great, but I run into some problems when I try to set up a vHost

As described in the guide I

1. made a new directory in my home folder /home/[myname]/www/test.dev to put my site in (it currently contains a simple index.html file as a test).

2. In /etc/apache2/sites-available I copied the file "default" and renamed it "test.dev"

3. I edited the content of "test.dev" to look like this:

Code:

4. I enabled the site using the command "sudo a2ensite test.dev". I then restarted apache "sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 reload".

5. I edited the hosts file: "sudo gedit /etc/hosts" to look like this:

Code:

6. I restarted apache "sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 reload".

Now if I enter "http://test.dev" in my firefox's adress bar I just get the apache2 "It works!" site. What is going wrong to cause firefox to show the "It works!" page rather then my own test site?

Like for example if after logged into a tty I type exit, I want the screen to refresh(reset?) such that all screen info is cleared and only login prompt is shown on the top left of the screen, like in fedora shell prompt.

Networking :: Setting Up Squid Proxy To Virtual Linux Soho Router?

Mar 31, 2011

i must make this work with the use of virtual pc's. I have vm player and installed fedora ( the latest version ) and one xp . So i have 2 virtual pc's. I'm making it simple for start so i can add more pc's when i see that it is working. I have setup a dhcp server at the fedora virtual pc. The fedora virtual pc is like a soho router. The xp pc is getting ip from dhcp while the fedora one has a static one.

My pc is behind an adsl router. Both virtual pc's can see each other which means i have no connectivity issues.Im trying to setup a squid proxy ( transparent one ) so for example the xp pc can access porn sites and such. I used all required configuration for the squid to work and started the service. Ive also inserted with iptables the commands to forward all incoming port 80 packets to port 3128 ( the squid ). It doesnt seems to be working and i thik i know why but i dont know how to fix it.

Because the xp has a gateway at 192.168.1.1 ( the adsl router ) packets go directly to it and not to the soho router ( fedora virtual pc as i intend to do) What can i do to solve this problem ? How can i forward all packets to go to the fedora virtual pc first and then the fedora pc to forward them (if necessary) to the adsl router? PS. I used Bridged connection on the networking configutration on the vmware player ! If you also want i can post the code for squid or iptables if needed !

Server :: Process Of Setting Up A Couple Of Virtual Servers In A Cloud Environment?

Mar 17, 2011

I am in the process of setting up a couple of virtual servers in a cloud environment. I am currently working on my application server (Server 1) and am stuck on the creation of my ruleset for this server.

I need to allow SSH, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, and PING on this server. This server will also need to be able to talk with a couple of database servers as well as a memcache server (all internally within my cloud environment)

I have been reading on iptables, since I have never messed with them before, and have come up with the ruleset I will paste below. I have taken other steps to secure my server...changing ssh port, not allowing root to login via ssh without logging in as a user, turning off unnecessary daemons, editing my hosts allow/deny files, just to name a few.

I am a newbie to iptables, so I would love a bit of helpful advice, criticism, and even a good explanation why I should add or remove or edit something. I really want to know the how AND the why!

Sep 6, 2010

Has anyone gotten XP Mode to work in Win 7- while Win 7 is running in VBox? Everything installs seemingly error free- XP Mode, and the two updates. I then start Win XP Mode. The computer goes through 25 minutes or so of setting up XP mode for 'first use'. At the end, a message appears: "Could not complete setup. Please try again". In Win7, I've removed XP Mode from Programs and Features, and reinstalled. No change.

Networking :: Outgoing Local Trafic Over Virtual Interface Has Not Virtual Ip Address

Aug 25, 2009

When I create virtual ethernet interface and do a ping -I <v_int> <host> the outgoing address is the one of the physical interface and NOT the virtual interface. Is there no chance that trafic will go out with virtual interface address??Incoming trafic is done well i.e. responds to the virtual interface have the virtual address.

My problem is that I have 2 modems and want to check both default gw behind the modems.
If I do a "normal" ping both are reachable over default route even the modem which is not the default route will not work because ping goes over the working modem. So I have 2 routing tables and want to route the virtual interface to one modem the other to the other modem

OpenSUSE :: Cannot Create A New Virtual Machine In Xen

Jan 5, 2010

I have been unable to create any type of Windows VM in Xen. Every time it tells me that the processor(s) in the machine do not support full virtualization. After some research, I found several articles regarding the vmx setting in /proc/cpuinfo not showing up when the xen kernel is booted versus it showing up in the default kernel. Of course, I am not seeing the vmx extension in /proc/cpuinfo after I boot to the xen kernel. In the other posts where other people are in the same situation, the only resolution is to upgrade to the 2.6.16 xen kernel. I am already past that:

linux-vxke:~ # uname -r
2.6.31.8-0.1-xen

yet I am still unable to create any form of Windows VM. I have even seen that some people are able to create a partially virtualized Windows VM, and they report that the message is only a warning. However, I am unable to get past this message. I am running a Dell Optiplex 760 with an Intel Core 2 Duo E7300, and I have the VT-x setting enabled in the BIOS. Has anyone else seen this situation or have any thoughts on why this is happening?

I tried setting it to Japanese, but all that does is add a button to switch to japanese that you annoyingly have to hit every time you want to enter a character. And not only that, even though the keyboard is in hiragana, it inputs katakana. Are there any other options for a virtual Japanese keyboard, or at least a way to get xvkbd to input hiragana?
