I installed Oracle VM virtual box from software installler.I want to run windows xp on it.But I'm getting following error whenever i click on start(note : I haven't installed xp just created the vdi.):First window: (VirtualBox - Error):Failed to open a session for the virtual machine WindowsXP.The virtual machine 'WindowsXP' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1.

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.and in the end Bug Buddy reports error.I saved the report file but where should i post it.(Provide link if possible)

Ubuntu :: Virtual Box Error After Update - Kernel Driver Not Installed (rc=-190

Oct 25, 2010

I have checked the known issues and the sticky post, it does not seem to be related. I have Ubuntu as my host OS and I want to run Windows as a guest.

Now, Here is the error:

Quote:

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-190

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. I have done the obvious:

Quote:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install dkms
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup

I still have the same error. I just updated from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10, then I was prompted by virtual box to update to the newest version, then this happened.

Ubuntu :: "Kernel Driver Not Installed" Error Every Time On Virtual Box?

Jul 28, 2010

Each time I try to run my Windows virtual box, I got this error: Quote: Kernel driver not installed (rc=-190

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. Which is fine, so I run sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup as requested and then it works. But I have to do this EVERY TIME I use Virtual box. This step takes a minute or two to do its thing, so it's quite time consuming.

OpenSUSE :: Virtual Box Error - Filesystem Unknown

I am experiencing a problem with virtual box 4. Did an install from binary, and everything went ok and virtual box launches, but once I have created the virtual disk and the want to run it, I get an error, and the log says that it has to do with the ext4 filesystem and has a known kernel bug. How does one go about sorting this out. Here with the log from virtual box.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Use The Ralink RT2860 Driver 11.2 - (error: Invalid Driver Rt2860.inf)?

Feb 2, 2010

I had a problem with using ndiswrapper to install Windows driver on Netgear WN511TA wireless adapter card. Problem solved by replacing Netgear WN511TA with Airlink101 AWLC6080 PCMCIA wireless adapter to work in my triple-boot XP Pro/Ubuntu Karmic/openSUSE 11.2 Toshiba laptop and using the latest Linux driver version 2.3.0.0 dated January 29, 2010 from Ralinktech site. I followed driver instruction in a Ubuntuforums tutorial (Howto: Ralink RT2860(m) PCI(e) RT2860...on Intrepid).

I am wondering if I can use the same Linux driver (RT2860sta) for openSUSE 11.2 on my triple-boot XP Pro/Karmic/openSUSE laptop, ie. copying over instead of building and compiling driver from source again, because I don't quite understand the build instruction given in the README file of Ralink's Linux driver file. Specifically, I don't know how to "define the GCC and LD (?) of the target machine, and define the compiler flags CFLAGS(?), modify your need (?)", etc. I already have gcc, cpp and make installed on the Ubuntu and openSUSE parts of my machine. I did try ndiswrapper in openSUSE but it doesn't work for the Windows version of the latest Ralink driver (error: invalid driver rt2860.inf).

OpenSUSE :: Suse 11.3 VirtualBox 3.2.8 Kernel Driver Not Installed Error - 908

Oct 9, 2010

I can see this error occurring in multiple past versions of suse. The answer seems to involve recompiling the open source version of VBox, but this is surely overkill. Isn't there a way to either a)get the right kernel version of VBox for 11.3 or b)set whatever permissions are required.

In all the answer so far I can't see a solution I can understand for these combinations, sues 11.3 and VBox 3.2.8. The error is consistent, and if the install doesn't work properly (it took my a few attempts even to install it without error messages) then surely its an issue either for Oracle or Suse? It runs ok but hwen trying to fire up a newly created XP VM this error message occurs trying to switch from W764bit to suse11.3 64bit

OpenSUSE :: Virtual On Virtual - VBox / Win 7 / XP Mode?

Has anyone gotten XP Mode to work in Win 7- while Win 7 is running in VBox? Everything installs seemingly error free- XP Mode, and the two updates. I then start Win XP Mode. The computer goes through 25 minutes or so of setting up XP mode for 'first use'. At the end, a message appears: "Could not complete setup. Please try again". In Win7, I've removed XP Mode from Programs and Features, and reinstalled. No change.

Using 11.3, Oracle/Sun VBox 3.2.8 with guest additions, and Win7 Ultimate with the three required downloads (after selecting Win7 Ultimate 32bit and English) Download Windows XP Mode

OpenSUSE Network :: Installing Driver Error - No Rule To Make Target `modules' - Stop

Apr 13, 2011

I am relatively new to linux and am running into a problem. I just got a new laptop and need to configure/install it's wireless driver but am getting an error when running "make". The error is: make[1]: Entering directory `/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop/build' make[1]: *** No rule to make target `modules'. Stop.

I have scoured these forums and know that others have the same issue (when configuring other drivers/programs). I am sorry if this post is redundant. It sounds like the Makefile is pointing to the wrong directory. I am using opensuse 11.4, have make and gcc installed. My kernel is linux-2.6.37.1-1.2 (I just re-installed the desktop kernel to make sure it was up to date). The driver I am trying to install is located here: AUR (en) - rtl8192ce.

Another forum suggests pointing somewhere in the /usr/src/linux-2.6.37.1-1.2 directory instead. Is this correct? Should I be pointing to a folder within this? I am not a programmer but any description about what I am actually putting in this directory and why would be awesome (so I can learn a bit more). Or just helping me solve the problem would be great too.

General :: NVidia Proprietary Driver Not Used On Virtual Machine

Feb 4, 2010

I have a CentOS 5 virtual machine (VMware Workstation 7) running under a Windows host, and need the workstation's NVidia graphic card (Quadro NVS 295) to work optimally for my data analysis tools.

When I try to install the Linux driver from NVidia's webpage, I get "You do not appear to have an NVIDIA GPU supported by the 190.53 NVIDIA Linux graphics driver installed in this system". I have found my workstation's graphic card in the list of supported graphic cards in the README.

I suspect this has to do with VMware's own graphics controller having taken over, because when I do "/sbin/lspci" I see: 00.0f.0 VGA compatible controller: VMware SVGA II Adapter

Does anyone out there know how I can let the NVidia driver get installed and take over (it looks like I need its newest version for my software to render properly)?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: How To Clear Proprietary NVidia Driver And Replace With Nouveau Driver

Jun 13, 2011

There is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed. The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.

Having typed that, IMHO this is NOT a Tumbleweed specific issue, but its MUCH WIDER in scope and hence does not belong as a discussion in this Tumbleweed thread.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: RTL8191SE Driver On Compaq Presario CQ62 Doesn't Work With XP Driver

Oct 23, 2010

No wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.

However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.

I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.
