I have video files in multiple directories. Is there a way to setup a vitrual directory that shows that content of all the video directories. Sym link is not good enough since the content of these directories changes all the time.

I get error:

As described in the guide I
1. made a new directory in my home folder /home/[myname]/www/test.dev to put my site in (it currently contains a simple index.html file as a test).
2. In /etc/apache2/sites-available I copied the file "default" and renamed it "test.dev"
3. I edited the content of "test.dev" to look like this:

4. I enabled the site using the command "sudo a2ensite test.dev". I then restarted apache "sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 reload".
5. I edited the hosts file: "sudo gedit /etc/hosts" to look like this:

6. I restarted apache "sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 reload".
Now if I enter "http://test.dev" in my firefox's adress bar I just get the apache2 "It works!" site. What is going wrong to cause firefox to show the "It works!" page rather then my own test site?
I have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge.
The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg
cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home
export HOME=~/testing/home
cd ~
screen -S testing-home
# start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc.
# test revisions
However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about?
So I'm wanting to learn a bit more about networking (ok, ALOT more), and I was thinking of trying to setup a virtual network via Virtualbox on my desktop, and as seperated from the internet as humanly possible (preferably no connection whatsoever).
Ignoring a few of the obvious problems (like my little dual core potentially running half a dozen VMs on 2G RAM), I am wanting some guidance as to what programs I would need or some documentation on setting things up.

I mean when the system boot and boots into console asking login info, how to reset the console to new page/clear screen(clearing all the boot up info lines) before it prompts to login. Like for example if after logged into a tty I type exit, I want the screen to refresh(reset?) such that all screen info is cleared and only login prompt is shown on the top left of the screen, like in fedora shell prompt.

i must make this work with the use of virtual pc's. I have vm player and installed fedora ( the latest version ) and one xp . So i have 2 virtual pc's. I'm making it simple for start so i can add more pc's when i see that it is working. I have setup a dhcp server at the fedora virtual pc. The fedora virtual pc is like a soho router. The xp pc is getting ip from dhcp while the fedora one has a static one.
My pc is behind an adsl router. Both virtual pc's can see each other which means i have no connectivity issues.Im trying to setup a squid proxy ( transparent one ) so for example the xp pc can access porn sites and such. I used all required configuration for the squid to work and started the service. Ive also inserted with iptables the commands to forward all incoming port 80 packets to port 3128 ( the squid ). It doesnt seems to be working and i thik i know why but i dont know how to fix it.
Because the xp has a gateway at 192.168.1.1 ( the adsl router ) packets go directly to it and not to the soho router ( fedora virtual pc as i intend to do) What can i do to solve this problem ? How can i forward all packets to go to the fedora virtual pc first and then the fedora pc to forward them (if necessary) to the adsl router? PS. I used Bridged connection on the networking configutration on the vmware player ! If you also want i can post the code for squid or iptables if needed !
I am in the process of setting up a couple of virtual servers in a cloud environment. I am currently working on my application server (Server 1) and am stuck on the creation of my ruleset for this server.
I need to allow SSH, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, and PING on this server. This server will also need to be able to talk with a couple of database servers as well as a memcache server (all internally within my cloud environment)
I have been reading on iptables, since I have never messed with them before, and have come up with the ruleset I will paste below. I have taken other steps to secure my server...changing ssh port, not allowing root to login via ssh without logging in as a user, turning off unnecessary daemons, editing my hosts allow/deny files, just to name a few.
I am a newbie to iptables, so I would love a bit of helpful advice, criticism, and even a good explanation why I should add or remove or edit something. I really want to know the how AND the why!

I created two Linux virtual machines. I created a same directory in both of them as following . /ocfs/clusterware I need to make this directory shared between them I mean , if create file in the directory in the first VM , I must see it from the second VM.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a need to create a virtual directory in Apache for one of my company's internal websites. I have confirmed that I can create an alias for a local directory: Alias /vdir/ "/usr/share/somefolder/"
So I would get to this virtual directory by going to http://server.domain.com/vdir/. But when I attempt to point it to a shared folder on another server:
Alias /vdir/ "//servername/share/"
or
Alias /vdir/ "//servername/share/somefolder/"
Both return the 404 Not Found error, which I would expect if it is not connecting to the share. I've searched but can't seem to find the correct syntax and I know I am missing something basic. I have searched google and these forums but can't seem to locate the exact syntax. Are there other lines in the config file I need? Permissions should be no problem the shared is EVERYONE has access (for now).
I've created a folder in /home called share. I am the owner. It has no group access. Others have full access. Is this setup safe? My current setup:

to create a directory /x/y/a/b/c/this containing this and everything under this.
But how could I create a directory x/y/b/c/this (ie omitting a)? I could MOVE to /a/ and then use
cp -vr --parents b/c/this /x/y
but I really don't want to do the MOVE (and can think of circumstances where I might not be able to).

I am running Debian under virtual container. I need to set max size of directory for each of vsftpd virtual users - because they are virtual, I cannot use user quotas. I was wondering, if I could create images with filesystem and mount them, but I cannot access /dev/loop device from container. Now my intention here to create a virtual directory, which I resorted to creating an Image File so that I can mount it and have my folder have a dedicated storage. I will mount this image as a loop device. Well it's not much of a problem, but I would like to know whether this is suitable. Say I want to create a 25GB Image.

Is this recommended? I'm using block size as 1G which is really huge, so I was wondering, if this is actually recommended. From what I read, some said that it's only advisable to use 4096k or lower, but what I found was that these suggestions are very dated (year 2003), and it is now 2010, so I would like to know if it makes any big differences.
I created LAMP server with a wordpress site. I created a sites-available file for the wordpress file pointing to the wordpress directory. Within my server it goes to the site properly. However I also made this server a DNS server, had another test pc use it as a DNS server and it only got the default apache page unless I added /wordpress to the url which makes it point to the directory within /var/www/ that it belongs, but then the wordpress links don't work and this is not what I want it to do anyway. I do not understand why it is working properly internally but not externally. It makes me think maybe the sites-available file is not allowing outside access appropriate permission to use it or something. Can somebody please point me in the right direction I have been working on this for weeks and I am starting to get really frustrated with it. Tell me what config files can help you figure out my issue. Also I eliminated the default index.html file so it wouldn't use it, then placed the index.php file from wordpress in /var/www/ root but in that configuration it doesn't load anything by default but will still work if you point to /wordpress. I believe I have to make some change to my apache2 configs to allow outside PCs to be pointed to the right root directory for the virtual host like is being done internally, I just don't know where to start.

I am using RedHat MRG on a standalone intel PC that has 8 cpus. It has 2 Quad cores. I am trying to force some specific persistent tuning on it so that the OS and IRQs are all on one CPU socket and then I can run my Application on the other CPU socket (4 CPUs) using the taskset command.
I have been reading up on this mainly at [url] and having some success. But, I have one IRQ that is not active until my application runs that I want to force it to be on CPU 4.
And so I believe I can do this by setting /proc/irq/default_smp_affinity to 10. But, I do not have such a file on my system. How can I create this file at boot time properly?

I want it to be set up so that my user (cj) will have a default directory of / when I log on to the FTP server and I want the secondary account (guest) to have it's home directory as the default location without any access to the root of the drive.
I need my account to have the default as / because the FTP client that I use in Windows won't go up to the parent directory of the default. Therefore, I cannot access the rest of my drive.
When I set "local_root" to "/" , it brings both users to the / directory when they sign in, even though the guest account is set to open the home directory with the "chroot_list_enable". It seems like the local_root option overrides the chroot_list_enable option.
Is there any way to set the default directory for each local user separately?
Also, Let me know if this is impossible with this FTP daemon

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed centos 5.5 Ent as host and i installed vmware server 2.2. i need to Change the location of the 'Virtual Machines' directory(/var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines) to a directory on /home(/home/Virtual Machines) where there is more disk space.Reinstalling centos and reinstalling Vmware server is not the option for me.

But I do not want to add the acl mount in /etc/fstab. So I am tempoararily mounting the device to some temporary directory as acl and setting ACL and then unmounting it. Then, I'm mounting it to the original directory.

The group is being changed, but ACL is not set for the directory.
I am somewhat new to linux, and fedora especially, I'm currently trying to get a linux based active directory server build in my home. I've tried using samba, dhcpd and the bind9 service but it wasn't wanting to work, so I did some searching and found 389ds on the fedora projects page. Now I'm having issues setting up the directory here's the log.

I am setting up Fedora-13 with "389 directory server" for authentication. I had performed the following steps.
1. Install FD-13.
2. Yum install 389-ds.
3. Run script to configure.
4. Start 389-condole and create few group and user for testing.
I can see these user with "ldapsearch" and with "phpldapadmin". It looks my server is responding. However, I am unable to see any user name with "getent passwd". also "ssh server_user@server" is not able to login. Whereas "getent passwd" shows local user and "ssh local_user@server" is able to login. Also note that I am not using ssl, so want to avoid ssl.
Vanilla install of Karmic (64 bit) - would like to change the Apache doc root to point to /home/sam/www as it's my web development machine. (Default install is working fine)

Each of the pieces I've installed all have an "Alias" directive in the conf file to link the directory where they live to be present on my server. For instance, DotClear lives in /usr/share/dotclear/web/ and there is a directive

that directs http://myserver/dotclear to that site.
Now, I've set up VirtualHost entries for my DotClear and Owncloud with their own hostnames.

Something similar for Owncloud.
The problem is when I go to [URL] ...., I get to my mythweb site.
This is not so good. So, for the sites that have their own hostnames, I removed the "Alias ..." directive. Of course, now I can't get to the hosts by going to the primary site which is probably fine, but I also still get my mythweb since that doesn't have it's own virtualhost entry.
This doesn't seem like correct behavior. Is there a better place to put the "Alias ..." directive so that it only works from one site and not all of them?
I am also thinking I should just link the directories into /var/www/html, but I'm not sure that's a better solution.
