Ubuntu Multimedia :: Using Rhythmbox For Your Personal Internet Radio Station?

Jan 11, 2011

Using Rhythmbox to stream your music to multiple potential listeners over the Internet. But mostly, writing down how I did it so I don't have to re-do all the research the next time.StepsInstall icecast2: APT linkEdit /etc/icecast2/icecast.xml to configure your password at least. You need to add a user-specific password for the username that will be running Rhythmbox. For example, if your username is john you need to putQuote:<john-password>ChangeThisPassword</john-password>between the <authentication> </authentication> tags.I also suggest you set the port to 8000.Restart icecast2 using the following command:

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/icecast2 restart
Download the attached script (shout2send.tar.gz) and extract it to

CentOS 5 :: Play Music Streams From An Internet Radio Station?

Sep 14, 2009

I just for the first time tried to play audio files on a CentOS 5.3 machine, but I noticed there is no xmms installed, and xmms doesn't seem to be available via yum either.

So, what is the easiest way of listening to mp3 files in CentOS 5.3 these days? Actually, I just want to be able to play music streams from an internet radio station.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Multi-Monitor Not Working Via Docking Station?

Nov 11, 2010

I use a Dell advanced port replicator at home and in the office. Each is connected to a second monitor. In neither place does the monitor actually receive a signal even though the monitor seems to be detected correctly in display settings. The function-F8 key does not have any visible effect.

Oh, almost forgot. At work once when I preparing to shut down the second monitor popped on for a few seconds though it was at the wrong resolution.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: ESATA / HDD Docking Station And Power Management

Aug 26, 2011

I want to "build" a new backup solution for my home LAN. I have 3 openSUSE machines at various versions and 1 File Server with openSUSE 11.4.My plan is to plug a eSATA or USB3 docking station on the file server and then take backups from the clients either via rsync or Amanda.Since the backup will not be a daily activity, I would like to have the option to run the backup during night, and automatically, BUT, without any action from my part. So, I would like to attach a large external HDD on the machine and then:Power on the docking station/HDD.Perform the backup from the Amanda Server or rsync scripts.Power off the docking station/HDD.Do you know any docking station that has a "linux" power management? If not, how do I power up/power down from console an eSATA or USB HDD?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Possible To Record An Internet Radio Stream?

Jul 10, 2010

Is it possible to record an Internet radio stream? I don't mean the audio output, I mean the stream itself, which often contains additional data such as track and artist details.

I guess what I'm asking is how to record the stuff that goes /into/ my media player, rather than what comes out of it. But maybe dealing with raw data like this would result in huge files and be impractical?

OpenSUSE Network :: Confused About MX Record In DNS

Jan 4, 2010

I have read several guides about setting up a DNS server using Yast, now I am confuse, some guides use hostname in mx records and ns records, other guides uses alias, with the respective A record not been the hostname but and alias, Now, I have a DNS server with the hostname server01 with the ip address 192.168.0.10 and a router with the address 192.168.0.1, this server is also the mail server, how will be registered the NS record, and MX record and the A record in yast for this server?

I was thinking in ns record as
server01
MX record
server01 with the value of 0
and an A record
server01 A 192.168.10

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Set One Soundcard For Playback, Another For Record

I have 2 soundcard - a M/B built in Intel AC97 and an old Aureal (later SoundBlaster). This is because there's a problem with Intel's microphone in XP. So I use Intel for playback and Aureal for recording.

Now, how do I duplicate same setup in Suse (to avoid switching plugs) ? I am a bit lost in where to specify hardware to be used for recording and playback.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Alsa: Cannot Record Sound

Mar 17, 2011

I've got sound - I hear all the system sounds, I can play sound files, CDs, etc. But I have not been able to record and play back anything with success.

Originally, when I would record (either with arecord or with audacity) I would get extremely low quality sound, with lots of noise and crackling, and my recorded voice was barely audible (even with volume turned up to max). I played with alsamixer for hours without being able to improve matters.

Things are worse now. I tried installing alsa-firmware, as indicated at SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE. I also tried updating alsa following instructions given at SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE. I'm not sure which of these changes did it, but the result is that I can no longer record ANYTHING at all. I get absolutely nothing, not even the low quality noise and crackling I was getting before. It's as if there is no audio input at all.

Uninstalling alsa-firmware and reverting back to the older alsa version (1.0.20) didn't change a thing.

I'm running openSUSE 11.2, kernel 2.6.31.14-0.6-desktop, alsa 1.0.20. My sound card is a Creative X-Fi (by the way, yast cannot detect my card, another problem I have never solved).

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Demuxing DTV Record With Projectx (or Other Soft)

Mar 25, 2011

I just buy a cheap Belson TV with recording feature on USB. I get a "ts" file, as usual. and as usual, the sound is not in sync, due to frames dropped. Last time I did so (with other hardware), I simply played the movie throuh an other recorder to get the mpg file, but now I can't anymore. So I try to find a good "ts" editor (I have a lot of unusefull video before and after the movie). Avidemux edits but do not fix the lost images/out of sync sound.

The tools mostly advertised for this use is "projectx". I have it on my openSUSE 11.3, but I fail to make it work :-(. I find no manual, except a very old (2004) one in english, and I don't read german :-(. Do you know of any english manual uptodate and understandable. projectx runs, but no of the files I get is readable by vlc or mplayer.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Microphone - Alsa - Pulse Audio - Can't Record Anything

Apr 8, 2011

I have some microphone problems. I can't record anything. (I'm using openSUSE 11.3)

My sound card was detected almost correctly (at least the chip-set was i think). I have an Asrock motherboard (k7upgrade880, with a Southbridge: VIA 8237 | Audio: CMedia CMI9761 6 channel AC'97.

I ran these commands so far with these results - while i was following the audio troubleshooting guide (SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE

But i have NO audio playback problems - movies, games, music all play well. And the Microphone guid has a broken link

I tried to change my 50-sound.conf file (i read it on a forum, I'm new to linux troubleshooting) from this:
options snd slots=snd-via82xx to this: options snd slots=snd-via82xx position_fix=1

But that did not work either. I did not get any sound with the last line.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Record/edit/save Music From The Microphone?

Jan 8, 2009

I would want to record/edit/save music from the microphone (convert a tape to CD). But. I start audacity, leave everything at default, record the music, and play back. It plays agonisingly slow. I can change the sample rate manually such that it sounds good, but this is just a guess (I could for example measure the recording time, and adjust the sample rate after that, such that the displayed time on the timeline fits this time). Why the hell do I need to do this? Why is the recording sample rate = playbe sample rate not producing correct output?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Cannot Properly Record Sound Card Output

Apr 8, 2010

A few days ago I setup a pc. It contains an "Intel ICH5" sound card. Before I begin posting all the configuration stuff I've tried so far what the standard procedures are to set it all up for recording the sound card output (with Audacity)?

On my older computer it all worked fine but now I only get silent recordings. However sometimes (when I played on the controls the right way...) I get recordings where you can (amoung some noise) recognize the stuff I actually wanted to record very low... Apart from Audacity I've also tried

Code:
arecord -vv -fdat audio.wav
which didn't work either. That's why I think the problem is not related to Audacity but to the system.

Is the combination of OpenSuse 11.2 + ALSA + Intel ICH5 commonly known to cause such trouble?

The target endpoint is xbmc- a media center. So far I know that I need to serve an rtp stream over udp that's streaming an mpeg-4 avc main or high profile with aac ( or ac3 ?) audio. I've had some luck using vlc with vlm to stream but it seems limited. What are my other options?  Everything has to run on Linux- hopefully open source. How can I use playlists and not live streams? What are my software options?
