OpenSUSE :: Popup Windows Become Black In KDE
Aug 20, 2011
I quite haven't figured out exactly when this happens, but it seems it happens after I connect an external monitor after logging, instead of logging in with the monitor plugged in. What happens is that every new window including popups become black. It seems if I turn off the desktop effects it goes away. I'm using T500 with intel graphics, and tumbleweed with KDE 4.7

I am using OpenSuse 11.4 (64 bits) with KDE 4.6.0. My graphic card is nVidia Ge Force 6150 LE with the nVidia proprietary 2D driver (called "nVidia" on the system information page).
A strange graphic behaviour occurs until a few days: when an application (eg Firefox) is already running and when I try to open another application (eg Thunderbird or Dolphin), the associated window is completely black except the upper bar mentioning the name of the application. It seems that this problem occurs only when an application is already running with its window displayed. It is necessary to close this application in order to run correctly another one. It is impossible to run correctly more than one application.

I have windows 7 and I'd like to install opensuse 11.3. I have tried with liveCD, live usb, live dvd, but when I click installation, it shows "kernel loading", and when it finishes the loading, all I get is a black screen. Sometimes, when I try with the live CD method it reboots and the same happens again.
In my other computer with XP installed inside, it works immediately. I have tried to change video mode to text and vesa mode, also I have typed "acpi=off noapic edd=off" in the boot options line, but it didn't worked.
The black screen appears not only for the installation option, but also when I choose boot live CD, and check installation media. By the way, I have checked the downloaded iso with md5 checker, and it's the right file.

Why am I getting this popup? Is this safe? What's the "dummy" part? This came up right when I started my computer up.

I've just made the switch from Windows 7 to Ubuntu (not dual-boot!) and have been messing around with Conky and AWN while trying to get a unique layout. However, while I absolutely love Ubuntu 10.10 so far, one thing that I'm missing is the ability to hover on an applications icon and have a mini-popup appear displaying what windows are open for that application. For instance, right now I've got 4 Firefox windows open. I know I can click on the icon and see a list of open windows, but I'd prefer to see the "preview" thumbnail that tells me what is on the page. For instance, anyone who's familiar with ch131 knows that their HTML <title> stays the same on all pages, so if I'm letting 6 full movies load overnight and want to start watching them when I wake up, I have to go through the list and click on each one till I arrive on the correct window.

i have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a pre installed windows 7 system. Ubuntu is working really well but the only problem is that when I try to boot into windows,
I get the windows sign and then I get a black screen and windows does not load. It seems to be an easy problem to solve because I can actually boot windows 7 in
safe mode with no problems at all! The problem is there when I try to boot windows 7 normally. To be honest I only need windows for a project that uses MSQL server.

Asked this on Jul 21, and didn't get any satisfactory answers. Thought i'd ask again before i switch to Ubuntu or go back to Fedora: Has anyone gone to software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.3 and actually chosen "Installation Medium" as "4.7G DVD", "Direct Link", "32 bit PC", hit the "Download DVD" button and gotten the file "openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso" which is not 49.0MB?
I mean, the steps above are not rocket science, and not much chance of making mistakes, so i'm not sure how i can get a download popup which specifies that the file is 49.0MB file, if it's not actually that size?

I m relatively new to Ubuntu and although I am very aducuate with computers it self (technology studie; modding, scripting and programming) I found a truly atrocious bug that ****s up Gnome (I assume). Here is a screenshot: [URL] The install is from one month ago, and since then i upgrades to 10.04. I never did any unusual stuff as far as I know. I added a few private repositoryś (playdeb, Virtualbox and some PPA?s) and configurated Compiz so it?s good to impress my class mates. This all is installed on a HP Pavilion DV6 with a Ati Graphics card and proprietary drivers.
it's some very simple thing that you can spell out for me cause I'm not in a great deal of time fixing this ****. Considering I nead this PC for school: it must work. Booting in windows would be a sign of weakness towards my classmates and it's no good advertising for linux in general.

Even though the windows look pretty good, I would love to put them back to regular white. I don't know why they are black, or how to fix them. The picture should show what i mean.

I recently decided to buy a new pc and install only one operating system: Debian.
The PC has an Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM and installed Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 with desktop KDE SC 4.14.2
I can use it for a while, but it always ends with the same problem: All the windows turn black, except the edge.
Furthermore, in the application launcher menu, the edge only appears, like when I make right click on the desktop.
They appear completely transparent. Only be solved by restarting the PC.

I'm having some issues with getting compiz to work properly. I've installed it from the software center, but i dont think its loading right, because compositing / transparency is turned off, now my windows have little black lines and corners where there would typically be transparency. how to get this working again, whenever i open the ccsm thing, the title bars go away.

Was running Server 8.04 with graphical desktop - no problems. Wanted to upgrade to 10.04, so ran sudo do-release-upgrade --proposed
Upgrade was successful (although so much stuff scrolled by, it's hard to tell if something errored along the way).
Server rebooted and a dark maroon screen said 10.4 is booting, ntp service started etc. and a scrolling series of dots.
Then got a sky blue patterned login screen, so I logged in. Screen then went black, with a movable mouse pointer.
If I do Alt-Tab a panel pops up saying ** NO WINDOWS **
Using Ctrl-Alt-F1 (iirc) got me a command prompt, so I logged in there and ran: startx
This gives me the message:
Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again
So checked runlevel (who -r) and that was set to 2. Changed /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf so RUNLEVEL=5
Rebooted, logged in again, still got black screen + mouse, and **NO WINDOWS**. Logged into terminal and runlevel=5.
Also tried running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but that returns immediately without anything apparently happening(?).
how I can get my KDE graphical environment back up ?

Most of the issues involve disconnect after a login and mouse settings. It does work fine for me, but after a few days of being up and using vnc on and off it will still connect, but show the black/white mesh screen with the big black X cursor, then if I wait 30 seconds it disconnects.
Heres the log when this problem starts happening
If I restart the computer it works again, however this message is still shown in the logs:
So I guess the above message is trivial to the problem? The thing is, I am not using KDE4, I installed 3.5, and in sysconfig my display manager is set to KDM not KDM4.
I'm using VNC through remote administration, multiple users will be accessing this from the network and need to get to the login screen.

I currently have a successful dual boot of XP and Fedora 10. I need to re-format my windows partition and re-install XP. When I use the windows CD, it asks to boot from cd. I hit any key and the screen goes black and stays there. XP is the primary OS (C, fedora is the secondary (D. Any thoughts? I still need Windows, because I am just learning Fedora.

decided recently to try a new Fedora (15) on my desktop computer with old GF6200 TurboCache (64MB physical memory). Installation was pretty easy, however the screen was full of artifacts on default driver (Nouveau). Therefore installed nvidia drivers following this guide [URL]. It seemed to be working... until I opened more than 5/6 windows - every new window was appearing black. Resizing the window helps but it looks like the total display area is limited (memory problem?) - I can downsize the visible windows to give more resources for the new one. Played with nvidia-config for some time without any luck. Google showed me I was not alone with this problem - [URL]. However no solution is apparently available yet. Let's start with some debug information:

I dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Sometime between 4/18 and a few days ago, something happened with Windows booting up. Ubuntu boots fine, but whenever I try to boot Windows, it just goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor (the command line kind, not a pointer). At first I thought it was Windows, but I have run the repair CD and executed chkdsk /f and chkdsk /r on all partition related to windows. No effect.
I ran a system check designed for issues with booting up, and it found no errors. I have looked at my GRUB files, and they all look fine. I am not sure if it is GRUB or Windows. I tried reinstalling the Windows boot-loader, and it had the same effect, the only difference is that it bypassed GRUB. The reason I think it may be GRUB is that the error happened around the same time as me upgrading from Karmic to the Lucid RC. I have posted this on a Windows 7 forum.

After running for a while, often after starting a program that displays graphics, such as Shutter, Gimp, Ocular, or maybe simply having previews in Dolphin (as some of my folders default to large previews)most menus, and some windows will go completely black. Some simply grey out (only ksystemlog does this that I have noticed so far)Blindly clicking anywhere on top title bar has no effect (would expect minimize/maximize etc to work if hitAlt-leftmouse or alt-middlemouse will allow window move/resize - black actively conforms to new window size/shape.
Often this blackening is preceded by a loss of all global hotkeys, which may not be related. With no visible menus or buttons, and with no hotkeys I am forced to hit the PC power button and allow kubuntu to shutdown. If I am lucky and hotkeys still work i can simply log out with ctrl-alt-shitft-del and logging in again fixes the issue.Linux betlogbox 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 08:03:28 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Recently, I've run into a rather interesting but also quite annoying instance of graphical corruption: a large black rectangle covering all or part of the window various running applications. What makes it interesting is that this graphical corruption only seems to occur in applications that have at least 2 tabs open. I've confirmed that it happens in pidgin, nautilus, gnome-terminal, and gedit; the latter 3 are shown in the attached screenshot.
Clearly, it has something to do with my graphics driver. I'm currently using the open source radeon driver in ubuntu 10.04 with a Radeon 9800XT.

I am having some major problems with some popups and all of my notifications:
Ubuntu Karmic 9.10
Video Card: ATI Raedon Mobility 7500 (open source drivers)
Running GNOME up to date version for 9.10, no compiz for now (on laptop)
The main problem is that, after updates, I have been getting popups and notifications that look like the attached... Which is problematic if you want to use popup/notifications such as those popped up.... These include Pidgin notifications, Sound Notifications, and whenever I attempt to open System Monitor, as can be seen from the snapshots.

Not sure if this is where to put this but I have tried googling to find a fix but couldn't find anything.
When I go to Travelocity to search for airfares a popup comes up. It is a small window and often it is for Netflix.
I can't figure out how to not have this popup show up. I have checked the Preferences/Content. I have block pop-up windows checked. I also looked to make sure travelocity is not listed, it isn't.
how to make this pop-up go away?
