View 1 RepliesAfter updating to Natty Narwhal, Chromium began to occasionally crash, with the screen going black except for the mouse,which would freeze seconds later. Any sound playing will loop the last second or so, and no keyboard commands have any effect. As far as I can tell only a hard restart works.
The exact same thing happens with Firefox as well, except that Firefox freezes with the screen image, not blackness.
It is not consistent, but has been getting more frequent, and I have noticed a pattern of the crashes being associated with paying Flash video, and is almost certain with such.
I have tried updating Flash, Chromium, and running the Update manager roughly daily for a while now.
I can follow instructions well and usually actually understand what you're talking about.
I've got a fun one for you. What makes absolutely any attempt to view a flash video crash Ubuntu 10.10, both in firefox and chromium? Lately, firefox began doing this. I switch to chromium, same thing. Also, the system completely locks up after about 30 minutes online if I can get the thing to work at all. When this happens, the rounded edges of all windows disappear, the menus become unresponsive, and any attempt to open the system monitor to end the offending process results in an "Unable to fork new process, system resource unvailable" something like that.
My entire online routine goes like this: open terminal, su to admin account to enable ufw (which will not run at boot no matter what I try), su to normal, limited account, open web browser, things explode (or work for 15 minutes before freezing completely.)
Does anyone know how to get it to work in Ubuntu?link:All I get is a black empty box both in Firefox and Chromium.

The system updated Firefox to version 6 yesterday, but now Firefox keeps crashing.I don't see anything in any logs, nor is there anything in the ~/.mozilla/firefox/Crash Reports directory.When I restart Firefox, sometimes it asks if I want to restart the lost sessions, sometimes it doesn't. I am using firefox version 3.6.12 and thunderbird version 3.1.6. They crash half of the time when something has to load, such as an attachment or download. Is there anything I can do about this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried to install a a custom splash screen using this guide [URL] and got as far changing the settings with Startup Manager. I found out that I didn't have an 'Appearance' tab so I reverted all the changes I've done in the 'Boot Options' tab. I then closed Startup Manager and rebooted back into linux. Now instead of seeing the purple Unbuntu screen, I see a black screen with a lot of pixelated garbage. Why I don't have the necessary tabs in Startup Manager to install a theme? I'm using a Macbook Pro 5,5.

It doesn't seem to have been a hard drive problem..I have enough space and memory.
With regard to addons, I have java and shockwave flash...and an addon for weather....though i have noticed it used to crash before I had installed any of those..

I am currently in the process of moving around 20TB of data from one server to another. Security is not a concern, since the data are freely available to anyone on our network anyway. There are a couple of things that I'm trying to decide on:
(1) protocol choice
Of all the choices I have--nfs, ftp, scp, rsync, samba--has anyone done any benchmarking to show which would be the fastest/most robust transfer protocol? I know nfs has slow write speeds for synchronous transfers. Asynchronous would be faster, but less robust. I'm leaning toward rsync since it performs md5sums to confirm the file transfers. (Remember if there's a 1 in a billion chance that a byte will get corrupted, then I'll have 20,000 corrupt bytes in the transfer.)
(2) Nautilus emblems
We use emblems in Nautilus to categorize files. The old and the new server have the same directory structure.Is there any way to copy the Nautilus emblems from the old server to the new server. What I want is that if a user had marked a particular file with a star on the old server, then that file would be marked with a star on the new server when he/she logs in.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have acquired what appears to be an old Gateway 2000 686 (Intel Chipset 82845G) with a Radeon X1600 graphics card and plan to turn it into a web server, although a minor problem, but I can not get a GUI (GNOME desktop) to load, however a text based server loads fine.Whether I use default 'GNOME Desktop' option at install or load text based install and use yum to install the GUI later, I get a couple of screen flickers and the screen goes black on start up.

View 3 Replies View Relatedafter initing PulseAudio, again only black sreens. I booted from an USB stick, tried mounting both filesystems, worked fine. I renamed my xorg.conf and booted from the first array. Worked with minimal video (low resolution, one screen only). Tried ATI control panel, claimed no driver active. I downloaded and installed a newer version of the proprietary ATI driver. Rebooted, got 3 screens at the right resolution. Problem seemed to be solved, all I had to do was configure ATI control panel to use 3 screens as one desktop.
Started ATI control panel, after clicking on the right section (nothing saved yet), CPU usage spiked, mouse froze. Crap. Rebooted, gnome froze before even showing desktop or populating top and bottom panels. Just black screens with empty panels top and bottom. Booted the USB. Ran fsck on both filesystems. No errors. Fear of not being to able to perform any work today ensued. Logged into ubuntuforums and explained the situation.
Im using firefox version 3.6.12 and it functions fine. However when i use the latest version of this addon https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...11377/#reviews the screen goes grey and firefox crashes. Restarting firefox only results in more crashes. I had a older version of this addon-1.5 i believe that worked fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a PC installed with FC 14:AMD 9500 Quad Core4GB RAM2x ATI X1950I've been using FC14 for a few weeks after updating from FC13.The graphics driver was a default one, it worked but it would only recognise one of my screen cards and I wanted to install the ATI Catalyst software so I began the process of installing the proper drivers.I followed the howto at: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=155503 Once I'd finished the driver seemed to be sort of working but everything was going really slow. If I moved a window it'd take a while to redraw in the new position, menus took ages to pop up, and so on.
I tried running aticonfig and got an error message (unfortunately the only record of it is on the machine I can't access properly). I put the message into a search engine and found a bug stating the same message where people had the same problem with Nvidia and intel cards too.The problem was something to do with python and how it started up the drivers (sorry I can't remember the message). The bug had an rpm attached that was a patch to fix this problem (I'm blabbing on in case any of this jogs the memory of someone that had this problem or worked on it).I installed the patch and rebooted and now Fedora gets as far as the black screen where a progress bar fills in white at the bottom of the screen but it stops there. Once the bar is completely white it sits there and gets on further no matter how long I wait.Does anyone know how I can recover this system? Is there a way of getting the system to recreate xorg.conf before this stage and load using the default driver again? The point it's hanging at is the point where it would normally bring up the graphical progress bar then the login screen.
Firefox & MySQL admin have black line borders. The tab, address input box, the search box, the scroll bars, and the dropdown menu area have this black line border. MySQL's admin utility displays the same. Can't figure out where to change it. Also other thread is about Desktop-Settings utility crashes. Should I just do a restore of user install defaults? How would I do that and save some of my desktop custom program icons?

I basically want to ape OSX and have an expose-like button, the screen edge works fine for now, but I would love a keyboard shortcut also. Is it possible? Also, when I set up a custom keyboard shortcut to run yast, I initially tried using the same command from the KDE menu: /usr/bin/xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2
However, when I use the keyboard shortcut to launch this command, I get problems when trying to use zypper after the initial launch using the keyboard shortcut(from yast GUI or CLI). The error basically states another instance of yast2 already exists. The problem is only with the app/repo management modules though; for instance I can launch yast (using keyboard shortcut or start menu) and access hardware info, sudo users etc, I just can't access software/repo management stuff. Even when I kill the offending PID from the CLI I still get the error and have to restart the box to rectify it proper. So I changed the keyboard shortcut command to : /usr/bin/kdesu /sbin/yast2
and this seems to have resolved the problem. My second question is what is the difference between the two in this particular instance and why does one cause problems (xdg-su) and the other does not (kdesu).
I have a fresh install of 11.04 on my ThinkPad, and it is crashing to a black & white text screen unpredictably. I was able to find the following in the syslog, which looks similar to what I see when it crashes:

I quite haven't figured out exactly when this happens, but it seems it happens after I connect an external monitor after logging, instead of logging in with the monitor plugged in. What happens is that every new window including popups become black. It seems if I turn off the desktop effects it goes away. I'm using T500 with intel graphics, and tumbleweed with KDE 4.7

Just why was this done and for what purpose? I'm posting this here because this screenshot was taken on Ubuntu and I'm using Ubuntu. I also tested Firefox 4 on Ubuntu before and didn't have this realignment of widgets.
My computer keeps having some kind of meltdown. i really cant explain it other than the screen will go black, and then it will start flashing like white bars, or different colored bars. this happens at such random times i cant exactly pinpoint what sets it off.
the only thing i may have a clue to is that in my update manager, there is one thing that is a distribution update that i cant check to have it installed or anything like that. its then "Gij" and its description is it is "the gnu java bytecode interpreter" i just dont know if i should just go back to an earlier form of ubuntu because these problems didnt start happening until i upgraded to the new ubuntu

A strange graphic behaviour occurs until a few days: when an application (eg Firefox) is already running and when I try to open another application (eg Thunderbird or Dolphin), the associated window is completely black except the upper bar mentioning the name of the application. It seems that this problem occurs only when an application is already running with its window displayed. It is necessary to close this application in order to run correctly another one. It is impossible to run correctly more than one application.
I have an Acer Aspire 4730Z laptop running Edubuntu 10.10 (32 bit, clean install). My problem is with the boot process. After boot and everything seems working properly, I will get the ?black screen of death? followed by the log in screen. Unfortunately, the display is made up of nothing but horizontal and vertical lines, leaving noting recognizable. I have to do a hard restart. I tested intensively and I can say that it freezes when Flash is going to reproduce a sound.
